Lately we've been changing the style in which we eat at home to incorporate smaller serving dishes and vessels so we really embrace Azmaya's smaller dinnerware offerings. In Japan a small spouted vessel used for serving is called a Katakuchi. Although traditionally they are used for pouring sake, we've been personally using this stoneware katakuchi for dressing and sauces.

Curator's Notes

This mixed metal coffee scoop is entirely handmade by Mitsuhiro Konishi in his Okinawa based workshop. We love seeing the irregularities in the hand hammered aged steel heads in contrast to the smooth brass handles. A substantial weight is balanced with an intricate attention to detail with small rivets and subtly curved handles. Curator's Notes

This small stool looks like a children's stool but it's actually the perfect adult sized stool height for tying on shoes! Provides a comfortable angle to get at those shoelaces making this little stool very appropriate for a foyer or mudroom. It is a shorter version of the beloved SH48 Stool and offers the same attention to detail. Handcrafted in the Hokkaido region of Japan, the stool exemplifies the traditional Japanese technique of "fuki-urushi". By repeatedly applying lacquer and then wiping it off, the appearance of a saturated wood grain is achieved. A thoughtful addition of a handle makes carrying a breeze. The stool also has subtle marks of the maker’s carving tools that add to its charm and handcrafted appeal.

We recommend applying a liberal amount of cutting board oil to dry wood with either a brush or clean cloth, allowing the oil to absorb overnight. Wipe off any excess with a clean cloth or paper towel and clean with soap and water. After 2-3 applications, the cutting boards will become more resilient to normal use and require less frequent oiling.

Curator's Notes

These boxes, otherwise known as "Ju-Bako" are made in porcelain with a unique inban pattern - a transfer printed design created by hand that began during the late Edo period in Japan. Ju-Bako boxes are traditionally multi-tiered containers. They are used for food and often reserved for special occasions like “osechi” (a New Year’s dish) or for sports meetings and cherry blossom viewings. We especially love this concept with Ju-Bako boxes made out of wood. However, although these porcelain Ju-Bako boxes in particular can be stacked, they are so delicate and stunning on their own, that we prefer them as a single layer with lid – ideal for jewelry or other precious personal objects!

I am a pair of Small Blackened Household Scissors. I'm the perfect pair for all your household needs.

Curator's Notes

To coincide with our previous Tajika Scissors and Shears exhibition, we collaboratively designed a pair of scissors with Tajika. The shape is based on the much-loved Household Scissors that we carry but the finish is different. We were inspired by the"Kuro-Mura" blackened brass pendants by Futagami because we liked the way they aged over time, taking on a patina that is a deep, saturated black. We were very interested in creating a similar richness in shade and decided to work with Daisuke to produce a pair of everyday scissors that has the same principles. Daisuke designed the Copper Scissors and his father originally designed the black handled versions. Needless to say, we are thrilled to be a part of the evolution of the Household Scissors!

Ryuji Mitani has become known for his unique way of applying lacquer (urushi). The brushstrokes are visible leaving a one-of-a-kind surface. Because the rim of the plate is wide it makes it so whatever is placed at the center is emphasized. Makes for a really nice presentation so although it's a dinner sized diameter, we think a beautifully plated dessert would be a showstopper on this plate.

Although these baskets appear delicate with their intricate woven pattern, they are made out of strips of bamboo and for this reason are quite strong. The lacelike pattern casts the most beautiful shadows and provides an airy surface for vegetables or fruit to rest on. As a company, Kohchosai Kosuga has a long history in manufacturing bamboo products by hand and the Mutsume baskets are a prime example of their expertise.

I've recently converted to matcha and drink a cup almost daily. After experimenting with different methods of making it, I realized that the one tool you need more than anything is a good whisk. Bamboo tea whisks are the traditional tool used to whip up a cup of hot powdered matcha and is what will help get that extra froth and smooth texture. It still mesmerizes me how the prongs of this whisk are split from a single piece of bamboo and yet each prong retains its strength. Pairs well with the Bamboo Tea Bowl.

Curator's Notes

Also known as a "duck spoon", the Chinese soup spoon has been used since 2000 BC, apparently once more common than chopsticks! These spoons are characterized by a deep basin tapering to a short, wide handle, and the ability to stack easily for storage. Masanobu Ando's take on the traditional spoon resembles a petal plucked from a daisy. I love how the glaze varies slightly thoughout the piece, growing more transparent along each edge so that the raw ceramic beneath is visible. The thick, curved handle is durable, and the high sides of the spoon's basin allow it to hold more liquid for maximum enjoyment of tasty broth. Also makes for stunning presentation of hors d'oeuvres - a beautiful way to showcase a single bite.

I t’s very exciting to have a donabe be a part of the award winning line of cookware, Ambai, designed by Makoto Koizumi. These earthenware pots have been used in Japanese cooking for centuries, with special properties ideal for even heat distribution and one-pot meals. Koizumi-san refines the traditional cooking vessel into a modern piece with clean lines and a simpler shape. The donabe comes with both a ceramic top and a circular lid of sawara cypress that looks beautiful against the subtle textured white glaze. The wooden lid is reminiscent of the Wood Drop Lid and is great for infusing deep flavor. As usual, Koizumi-san designs to improve the user experience – the interior of the donabe is marked with lines to indicate the correct water level for different amounts of rice. A piece that draws from the best of tradition and brings it into modern times!

This aroma hook can hang in a closet or room to create a subtle natural hinoki cypress wood scent and repel moths. With its distinct variation in grain and colour, this solid piece of wood hangs beautifully on a contrasting slender metal hook.

Curator's Notes

The smooth curves of this vase remind me of an ancient Greek amphora. The Greeks would use their amphoras to transport large quantities of wine and various other liquid goods. You could also fill this little vase up with wine, but I don’t think it would get you very far. A mini bouquet of flowers is probably more suitable.

I've always enjoyed looking at antique candleholders at museums like the Met because after all, candlelight was society’s only source of light for far longer than electrical bulbs. There is an immense amount of variety and history behind candleholders as a result.
This particular candle holder is reminiscent of vintage chambersticks that were designed for carrying.

The oil will help blades glide smoothly and keep scissors lasting forever.

This little milk pan is a perfect vessel for heating up smaller quantities, when using a larger pot can be a waste or cause the contents to burn. I love it for heating up milk, sauces, and melting butter for pancakes. The lip allows for easy pouring of hot liquids, and the wooden handle feels soft and comforting to the touch.
