From a single piece of iron, this wrought-iron turner was born. The fluid lines are evidence of Takayoshi Narita’s eye for beauty and the slight irregularities indicate that it was made completely by his hand . Its textured surface has the alien luster of a meteorite, and its sturdy body holds memories of heat and pressure from the intense process of its firing.

Curator's Notes

These teacups are a tad larger than the other teacups Masanobu Ando makes so they give you a bit more volume than, for example, the Chrysanthemum teacup. I love how just a few pinches in the rim can depict the plum ('Ume' in Japanese) so poetically and add to their hand formed nature. Great for Chinese tea or Japanese tea. As an option, the blossom shape pairs nicely with the simple ceramic Square Coasters also by Masanobu Ando. The u pturned corners give the coaster the look of a floating piece of paper or a leaf blowing in the wind as it gently cradles the small teacup.

Curator's Notes

At first look, this chawan appears to be carved from stone or forged in metal. In fact, it has been hand-built from slabs of clay by Masanobu Ando, whose creativity in ceramics produces pieces that are each a wonder to behold. Though it's a stunning vessel for preparing and drinking tea, I love this chawan for the special serenity it radiates even when at rest on the shelf. This feeling comes in part from the bowl’s subtle irregularities—Ando-san’s technique never agonizes for perfection, but rather lets the form emerge freely and naturally. The resulting piece has a harmony that no exactitude of symmetry could achieve.

There were two things that I intimately remember when I first came in contact with the cups… 1) they are incredibly lightweight with beautiful tapered walls that come to a thin edge, 2) they are incredible addictive to touch and hold in your hands. The cups fit within your fingers so naturally and effortlessly that they feel ‘right’. "Cara" is a series of egg-shaped tablewares making the most of the warmth of wood as a material and Japanese thin-wood-curving techniques. The curvatures of the pieces are meant to mimic the egg so as to fit gently within your hands.

The name of this piece is Kyusu, which traditionally means teapot, and often the word refers to one with a side handle. This one's a bit confusing because it has a handle on top (still technically a kyusu) and it has a contemporary shape that makes it look like a kettle. Semantics aside, we love it! You can use it to brew loose leaf tea as it cleverly includes a stainless steel strainer.

I am a Pour Over Coffee Dripper. Have patience, it’ll be worth the wait.

Curator's Notes

A while ago, but not too long as the moment is still clear in my memory, we converted to making manual pour over coffee at home instead of with machines or other methods. It may have had something to do with our increasingly frequent travels to Japan but we began to embrace a new form of coffee making popular in Tokyo, which up until around 2010, hadn’t yet made it to American third wave coffee shops. It was something about the mastery of technique and the ceremonious manner of preparing a pour over coffee by hand that actually made it more enjoyable. The focus became on the craft behind the brewing process and the taste of the coffee was better as a result. In any case, our first pour over coffee maker was this one by Tetsuya Otani. We still have it and it’s aging beautifully with each brew.

This Wood Cup is very special to us. It’s shape is inspired by the eight ounce paper cup from a local coffee shop that has been a part of our mornings ever since we opened our store. We wanted to faithfully reinterpret this cup in a single hand-turned piece of wood, that would feel almost identical to the original in our hands and on our lips. Its thin edges make it light but durable; a subtle protective coating prevents staining. The result is an object that is distinctly representative of our time in New York, our relationship with Japanese artisans, and our belief that beautifully crafted items should be used and enjoyed as much as possible. The hunt for a small switch plate has proven to be a difficult task, until we discovered the unique geometric styles offered in the MATUREWARE collection. We especially like the idea of a smaller sized switch plate for a look that’s a bit subtler. In addition to their small size, we also like how you can match the geometric shapes with different design elements in a space. A room with more curvilinear or rectilinear details calls for fixtures with similar qualities and the circle, square and hexagon switch plates are the perfect options.

Curator's Notes

The artisanal quality of this pitcher embodies the ancient traditions of handmade ceramics. Featuring an easy pour-spout and comfortable handle, we envision this piece being used to serve ice-cold lemonade at an outdoor dinner party!

Sgraffito is derived from the Italian word “scratch”. It is a technique of applying layers of slip onto a ceramic form and, while semi-dry, removing and etching certain areas to create a contrasting surface design. Momoko’s works are inspired by her love of lotuses and banana leaves. Her white sgraffito series display lotus buds and petals in bloom. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, featuring unique variations. They simply brighten up your day. Ceramics that will be cherished for a lifetime, knowing so many loving hours were put into the making of them!

Curator's Notes

Ideal for storing grains or bread, this rice bin is made from Paulownia wood that is commonly known in Japan as Kiri wood. Kiri is highly regarded among Japanese craftsmen for being lightweight while strong and easy to work with. Traditionally, Kiri boxes are constructed with wooden nails and true to form, this rice bin also does without such hardware as nails and screws. Along a built in channel, the lid easily glides shut sealing odours and insects from entering the box while naturally repelling moisture. Included is a small kiri wood rice scoop.

Beautifully crafted from solid walnut wood, Kakudo boards can be used as a cutting board, serving tray or even as a plate. Each board has a ½” groove to catch run-offs and an elevated base. Curator's Notes

A high stool that is the appropriate size for a standard kitchen counter made at this level of craftsmanship is few and far between. Although it's the perfect counter stool, it can also be used as a bar stool for bar counters that are a bit lower than usual. I like how the foot rest is slightly low on the legs so it sits very comfortably. When you come across a foot rest bar on counter stools that is too high or low, you can tell they haven’t been product tested really well. This stool is so comfortable, Iba Takahito has definitely tested this stool for daily use. He simply makes it look easy even though hours upon hours of labour goes into each piece.
Like the SH30 and SH48 stools, the High Stool is handcrafted in the Hokkaido region of Japan. The stool exemplifies the traditional Japanese technique of "fuki-urushi". By repeatedly applying lacquer and then wiping it off, the appearance of a saturated wood grain is achieved. A thoughtful addition of a handle makes carrying a breeze. The stool also has subtle marks of the maker’s carving tools that add to its charm and handcrafted appeal.

Curator's Notes

We love the feel of flicking on these MATUREWARE toggle switches. The way it clicks when turned on is particularly satisfying. The toggles themselves are reminiscent of a bygone industrial era, as though parts from antique machines influenced them. We also like the unique ihada sand-casted texture that Futagami has become known for, a surface that will change in character and appearance over time. Since switch plates usually stay in place and are not something that you change often, we especially like the concept of an object existing in your home that has the ability to grow with the people who live with it.

I am a Marumaru Wind Chime. Just going where the wind blows.

Curator's Notes

This wind chime is a thoughtful reimagining of the Japanese chimes that are often found at temples. Traditionally, the paper slip would have a prayer written on it, but we think the slips look beautiful blank as well! Watching the creamy length of paper dance in the wind is an act of meditation, and the golden orb of brass sings with a beautiful chiming tone.
