Curator's Notes

I've always enjoyed looking at antique candleholders at museums like the Met because after all, candlelight was society’s only source of light for far longer than electrical bulbs. There is an immense amount of variety and history behind candleholders as a result.
This particular candle holder is reminiscent of vintage chambersticks that were designed for carrying.
