This handle doesn’t look very ergonomic but surprisingly it feels very nice in the hand because the backside of the handle is curved. It has a clean aesthetic because there is minimal lines when looking directly at it. It’s a nice surprise to see that from sideview the handle is curved.
Each MATUREWARE handle is made of solid brass making the weight quite substantial and especially ideal for doors that are accessed frequently. If a door is particularly plain, these handles add a sophisticated detail. The door handles are available in four different lever shapes. Each handle can be combined with an interchangeable plate for a range of possible combinations to fit any aesthetic.

Curator's Notes

Futagami-san made us two plaques when he debuted the Matureware product line for the first time May 2016 at an exhibition at Nalata Nalata. One was embossed and the other was debossed with our handwritten logo. Till this day, I still can't decide which one I like more.
I like the weight and the quality of the plaques. It resonates a permanency when displayed and that's why they are often used as house names plaques or house numbers plates in Japan. I just can't wait for the day I can use one in front of my home.

I am Room Shoes. I’m made with a special kind of fiber, a mix of paper and plants. Although some may say I’m too softhearted, I think I turned out pretty well!

Last year we moved into a turn of the century brownstone and although the original wood floors have character, they also give splinters. I’ve been in the market for comfortable shoe-like slippers for the home ever since and no matter how many wonderful pairs I find, the Sasawashi Room Shoes remain my go-tos. They are the perfect mix of comfy fit and durable construction. The top cap is flexible and soft while the sole is a lot sturdier and can hold up to everyday wear. I also like how innovative the material is with the addition of Kumazasa fibers that keep the insoles feeling fresh. It’s like walking on a tatami mat!

To coincide with our previous Tajika Scissors and Shears exhibition, we collaboratively designed a pair of scissors with Tajika. The shape is based on the much-loved Household Scissors that we carry but the finish is different. We were inspired by the"Kuro-Mura" blackened brass pendants by Futagami because we liked the way they aged over time, taking on a patina that is a deep, saturated black. We were very interested in creating a similar richness in shade and decided to work with Daisuke to produce a pair of everyday scissors that has the same principles. Daisuke designed the Copper Scissors and his father originally designed the black handled versions. Needless to say, we are thrilled to be a part of the evolution of the Household Scissors!

For a while, we were buying plastic broom and dustpan sets with the mindset that cleaning supplies were meant to be temporary and hidden away. However, discovering this broom and dustpan set made me realize there was a better solution. We are big fans of Makoto Koizumi , and his design here is thoughtful and elegant as usual. The size is scaled down, the materials of wood and metal are durable and beautiful, and the the head of the broom swivels to reach tighter areas. Good design can make an activity as mundane as sweeping a pleasure!

Masanobu Ando built this chawan using the Japanese tatara technique, rejecting perfection and welcoming serendipity to give the piece its unique spirit. The primordial form has the warmth of human hands, and the metallic glaze transforms the ceramic into a mysterious new material. As I look into the depths of the bowl, its flecks of gold glitter look back at me like stars. As I turn the bowl between my hands and experience the infinite variation of shadow and light, I feel inspired to accept things as they are. Not perfect, but beautiful.

I’ve always felt that every object has its spirit, and clocks in particular have character. One might hurry me along while another suggests that I savor the day. The classic face of this desk clock feels like an old friend, and everything about it shines with quality and precision. The numerals are embossed in velvety black ink onto textured ivory paper. The base has been gently inclined so that the face leans slightly upwards towards your gaze. Its dark wood brings warmth, its classic numerals bring comfort, and its silently sweeping hand brings peace.

Masanobu Ando has created a unique style of conducting a tea ceremony that is neither Chinese nor Japanese. It combines elements of both traditional methods with Ando-san’s own rituals and tools. The components of this portable tea set are assembled by Ando-san and fit compactly into a leather case. It includes a teacup trio, silver coasters, teapot, hand-hammered tea funnel, tea pick, pitcher, water container and custom made textiles for protection and carrying.

Yonabe in Japanese translates to mean “Western”. The pot is designed for cooking what the Japanese considers Western-style meals. For example, it can be used to cook a casserole in the oven, or to slow-cook a stew on the stovetop. It is a very versatile cooking pot but we also like it because after you cook you can insert the wooden handle for easy transportation to the dinner table and serve food right from the pot!

Honestly this tray is meant to be a serving dish but I don’t know if its the most appropriate eating dish. I can see it being used for serving food or tea during really formal gatherings but for the most part we don't eat like this on a daily basis - typically it ends up being used as a display platform. It makes for a really elegant platform because of the negative space the slight elevation creates.

We love cookware that is at once functional and beautiful and the Yukihira Pots are just that! The three layers of stainless steel that compose the walls and base are fantastic for daily use and hold up well to frequent cooking. The contrast of a polished stainless steel exterior and chrome interior walls with teak wood is an exquisite combination of textures and materials. You can cook with ease as a result of the comfortable shape of the wood handle, spouts on both sides and the handy volume increments embossed on the interior and exterior of the pot. These hand made porcelain pendant lamps break up space with soft warm light, bringing a sense of calm and harmony to its surroundings. We love the hazy rouge hued glow that porcelain naturally gives off along with the ridges and fine lines that quietly rest on these gentle forms created by ceramic artisan, Tobimatsu. The off-white surfaces, intentionally left unglazed to further the soft illumination effect, leaves a palpable paper-like impression on the senses.
