I’ve never seen a tea case quite as well crafted as this piece by master wood artisan, Norio Tanno. Whenever I’m in Hokkaido, I make it a point to meet with him, just to get a dose of inspiration for our own wood designs. Seeing him pass down his skills to his son Masakage Tanno, makes me want to do an apprenticeship with him! This Tea Case is one of his masterpieces in my opinion. It is full of beautiful surprises and a delight to handle. Incredibly intricate, the case has multiple components that are all handcrafted in solid wood with wood joinery techniques. An exterior case houses an interior canister that perfectly slides together. A foldable tea scoop sits securely on top of a small knob on the lid of the interior canister. All the pieces have their place.

I love a matte glaze, especially one that begs to be held. Sue Binns has done just that with her charming blue striped coffee mugs. She has also considered day-to-day functionality by making the interior of the mug glazed to avoid staining, without being overwhelmingly glossy. We use these cups almost everyday and selecting which cup will be the ‘stripe of the day’ is a simple joy every morning. Each striped pattern expresses so much personality!

We have a newfound tea obsession at Nalata Nalata and this teapot has been opening our world to so many different forms of tea. When a teapot is made out of glass, the beauty is in the ability to see the subtlety in the colours of different tea varieties directly through the pot as it steeps. This teapot by husband and wife duo, Studio Prepa, was designed with the transparency of heat resistant glass in mind, making it ideal for vibrant coloured fruit teas and floral tea. We also like the handcrafted nature of the hand-blown glass and bent bamboo handle. A truly unique teapot!

Not your typical thin based, wide platform cake stand but a beautiful slightly raised alternative that will surely hold any cake in high regard. This one-of-a-kind handmade piece is like a work of art, and can even function as a wall hanging.
Sgraffito is derived from the Italian word “scratch”. It is a technique of applying layers of slip onto a ceramic form and, while semi-dry, removing and etching certain areas to create a contrasting surface design. Momoko’s works are inspired by her love of lotuses and banana leaves. Her white sgraffito series display lotus buds and petals in bloom. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, featuring unique variations. We love the feel of flicking on these MATUREWARE toggle switches. The way it clicks when turned on is particularly satisfying. The toggles themselves are reminiscent of a bygone industrial era, as though parts from antique machines influenced them. We also like the unique ihada sand-casted texture that Futagami has become known for, a surface that will change in character and appearance over time. Since switch plates usually stay in place and are not something that you change often, we especially like the concept of an object existing in your home that has the ability to grow with the people who live with it.

Rice boiled in this traditional method with the Hagama Rice Cooker is noticeably tastier as the cast iron boiler heats contents evenly to create plump grains and crispy edges. Great for cooking plain rice or a special rice and beans recipe! The boiler pot is heavyweight, durable and has a thick cast iron wall made with renowned Nambu-style ironware techniques. Curator's Notes

This is the second iteration of Makoto Koizumi's award-winning cast iron kettle. Here, Koizumi-san has made adjustments to his original design to improve its functionality. An easy-to-hold round wood knob makes it convenient to lift the lid when hot, and the lid's new circular shape allows it to hang off the edge of the opening. I love when designers continually seek to improve their designs! It shows that their focus is on the human who uses their work - an attribute that Koizumi-san certainly possesses. Each of his designs is thoughtfully, carefully designed for a beautiful user experience.

This table is another brilliant design by Makoto Koizumi. Stunning in its purity, all embellishment has been removed until the essence of a table remains. A circle of wood floats atop a three-legged base - as beautiful as a sculpture. In fact, Koizumi-san designed this table as a custom piece for the office of the renowned Miyazaki Chair Factory, perfectly suited for the space’s size and needs. It was not intended to be available for purchase, but after countless requests by clients, Miyazaki has graciously obliged. We’re thrilled to have it as part of our collection!

Forged cutlery is made from thick pieces of stainless steel. The raw stainless steel in this collection is heated with a blowtorch in order to shape it by repeatedly beating with a hammer and other tools. Curator's Notes

This oak bench can stand in an entryway or serve as a seating solution for many areas of the home. Pulling the bench out from tables is effortless with the grooved handles hidden along the under-edges of the seat. Handcrafted in the Hokkaido region of Japan, the stool exemplifies the traditional Japanese technique of "fuki-urushi". By repeatedly applying lacquer and then wiping it off, the appearance of a saturated wood grain is achieved. The stool also has subtle marks of the maker’s carving tools that add to its charm and handcrafted appeal.

I am a Low Hairu Rattan Basket. Less is more and that’s true with clutter. Make room for mind space and put it all on me.

Curator's Notes

Considering raw rattan can take on a variety of forms after processing, it’s a well-loved material that has been used for ages to make furniture and weave baskets. Rattan is also lightweight, durable and flexible to work with providing artisan’s the ability to bend and shape it into intricate patterns or oblong forms. Hairu with the help of designer Rina Ono, combines these properties, traditional techniques and incorporates the perfect proportions for modern living in a series of baskets that gently cradle household belongings. They can be used to store items such as magazines, electronics, towels, throw blankets, toys and accessories.
