Eero Saarinen designed the Tulip Chair (1957) at the peak of his career. His work in the 1940s began focusing on "organic furniture" in which he aimed to restore formal order to the typical interior setting. His vision was to free the interior space from the "sea of legs" that he saw creating "an unpleasant, confused and restless atmosphere." The Eero Saarinen Tulip Chair represents Saarinen's synergy of that vision and its embodiment in a tangible form. The Saarinen Tulip Chair continues to be one of the most popular items from this modern classic designer.

In 1917 Gerrit Rietveld designed the Red Blue Chair, sometimes referred to as the Mondrian Chair, which signaled a radical change in architectural theory. The Red and Blue Chair was originally constructed in a natural wood finish, but in 1921 Gerrit Rietveld began an association with the De Stijl movement that led to the distinctive painting of this revolutionary chair.
Gerrit Rietveld's unusual furniture designs led to several housing commissions, which he invariably designed in a Neo-plastic style. Gerrit Rietveld was born in Utrecht, the Netherlands in 1888. He was originally a qualified cabinet-maker. From 1930 he was working as an independent architect. Until 1931 Rietveld was a member of the artist group "De Stijl". He died in Utrecht in 1964. "The chair (read Red and Blue Chair) was specifically built to show that it is possible to create something beautiful, a spatial creation, with simple machine-processed parts. I cut a board of wood into planks and squares. I then sawed the middle part into two for the seat and the backrest, and I made the frame part out of the different lengths of a plank. Michael Thonet's classic rocking chair design remains one of the most iconic bentwood pieces of this inventor, designer, and innovator.  Throughout the past 150 years, the bentwood rocking chair has been made in dozens of variations. The Dondolo is manufactured by an original Michael Thonet factory based on the No. 7027 design first seen in broadsheets around 1870.  All of the variations of the bentwood rocking chair were designed before 1883.
The output of Michael Thonet's bentwood furniture factories was vast, due in part to his idea of designing separate pieces which would be combined to make a large number of models. Michael Thonet stands out as a designer and pioneer both in mass production and in design, as he artistically explored the new forms and unique qualities of his newly invented technique.  Remarkably few changes have been necessary over the last 150 years. The factory still follows the 19th-century production methods developed by Michael Thonet to produce stylistically accurate, handsome, and sturdy bentwood chairs, stools, tables, and accessories. Today the Michael Thonet Rocking Chair continues to be a favorite worldwide.

Michael Thonet Dondolo Rocking Chair By Ton

Gerrit Rietveld's Zig Zag Chair, Red and Blue Chair, and other designs have become architectural modern classic design favorites. Gerrit Rietveld was born in the Netherlands in 1888. By the age of 23, Gerrit Rietveld was studying architecture and started a furniture factory. In 1918, he designed the Red and Blue Chair. In 1924 Gerrit Rietveld designed perhaps his most famous architectural work, the Schroeder House. This design, both inside and outside, features asymmetrical geometric forms.
The Schroeder Table is one of the pieces that was designed specifically for this enduring treasure. In 1922-23 Gerrit Rietveld designed the Schroeder Table for the Schroeder House in Utrecht which was constructed in 1924. Taking the name from this housing commission, the Schroeder Table also inherited its cubist style and brilliant color scheme from its predecessor the Red and Blue Chair. Together, these pieces signaled a radical change in architectural theory. His unusual furniture designs led to several housing commissions, which he invariably designed in a Neo-plastic style. Assembled from simple geometric forms, the Gerrit Rietveld Schroeder Table is as asymmetrical as the house itself.

Faithful to the aspect of the original prototype of the Grand Modele of Le Corbusier Grand Confort, this two-seat version underlines the contrast between the softness of the feather seat and the rigidity of the metal structure. Whereas the LC2 and LC3 Grand have firm and tailored cushions, the LC3 Soft will take on a less formal appearance of "broken-in luxe." The construction of the prototype certainly had handicraft characteristics, which only after 1959 could be adapted to the requirements of large-scale production.
The two and three-seater models based on the design of the Le Corbusier Grand Confort cannot in actual fact be attributed to Le Corbusier, who had conceived an armchair suited to satisfy the physical standard of an individual and had refused Heidi Weber's request to extend the original design to a sofa. It was not until the end of the 1960s that the first models of sofas inspired by the Le Corbusier Grand Confort appeared on the market.
Born in 1887 in Switzerland, Le Corbusier became one of the most influential architects, painters, and industrial designers of the 20 th century.  At the early age of 20 years old, Le Corbusier had finished his first house project, Villa Pallet.  By the 1920s, Le Corbusier was designing complete public housing structures attempting to utilize his Five Points of Architecture – a roof garden, pilotis or columns for supporting the structure above the ground, horizontal windows, free design of the interior plan, and free design of the façade.

Marcel Breuer designed the Cesca Stool in 1928 with the interest of comfort in mind. Like his progressive Wassily Chair (1925), the Cesca Stool is constructed of tubular steel. The chair was named "Cesca" as a tribute to his daughter Francesca and was never patented, explains a 1991 New York Times article. "While Breuer signed a contract with Knoll Group, his design has always been in the public domain," noted the group's vice president of design at the time.
The immediate impact of Marcel Breuer’s tubular steel designs became evident just a few years after his initial experiments with the material at the Bauhaus. By 1928, Standard Mobel was heavily marketing the attributes of Breuer’s chairs. Features such as cost, comfort, lightness, and durability were all included in ads by this company. The style aspect of these chairs must have been self-evident as the appeal of modernism was quickly taking root in Europe.
Tubular steel and modernism went hand-in-hand upon its introduction in the 1920s. Up until that time, Thonet’s bentwood chairs were favored by most architects as they were mass produced, visually transparent and had a modern appearance. Tubular steel would be significant as it had all of the characteristics that bentwood chairs had, but it was a material that did not refer to the past, but to the future.

Le Corbusier designed the original Petite Lounge Chair (LC2) collection based on the human scale. A strong advocate of Modernism, Le Corbusier created a range of Petite Lounge Chairs (LC2) that express his ideas with great sophistication. Mrs. Heidi Weber of Zurich first put the Le Corbusier Petite Lounge collection into production in 1959. With his the approval, she changed the appearance of this chair and added this three seat sofa. She removed the spring mechanism and used fabricating methods which allowed the frame to be chromed. She also gave the cushions a more formal, tailored look. Her contribution to the re-design of the collection was instrumental in the commercial success of the collection.
Though Le Corbusier designed furniture that is considered timeless, he used many simple bentwood furniture pieces from Thonet for the interiors of his architectural designs.  Such items as the B9 Bentwood Armchair were used by Le Corbusier in such buildings as the Villa de la Rocca, and even in his own home near Stuttgart, Germany.  It was the combination of form, function, and economy of materials that appealed to the designer.  Later in his career, Le Corbusier’s tubular steel furniture would be sold through this same company.
The LC2 Petite Three Seat Sofa featured on this page is hand made by craftsmen in Tuscany Italy.  Using only techniques available to Le Corbusier, this three-seat sofa is made in the same fashion one would have found decades ago.  It is through these labor-intensive techniques that we are able to provide a quality reproduction of this important piece of furniture history.

Designed in 1955, the Jacobsen Series 7 Chair continues to be one of the most popular chairs around because of its functionality, durability, flexibility and overall contemporary design. Designed by the famed Danish designer, Arne Jacobsen, 5 million of these chairs have been installed in homes and businesses around the world. Arne Jacobsen was a fascinating designer whose work was not limited to furniture. Though he had several legendary furniture designs, such as the Egg Chair and Swan Chair, he will also be remembered for his talents as an architect. Such projects as St. Catherine's College at Oxford, the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and the Danish National Bank exhibit his Danish Modern Style.
Jacobsen was known to have many faces. As a designer, he was a perfectionist. In his non-professional life, he was known to have a fantastic sense of humor. He enjoyed making others laugh at his own expense. One famous story recalls Jacobsen betting friends that he would wear a melon as a hat. Using a multilayered wood structure with a beechwood finish, the seat and back are mounted on a tubular steel frame that has been chromed.
The underside and bentwood structure are manufactured in the same way the original Series 7 chair was built. Stacks 5 high.

Arne Jacobsen Series 7 Chair

The SE 05 dining room chair with a seat and backrest made of wicker, was designed in 1960 by Martin Visser. The manuscript of Visser is unmistakably visible in the apparently simple design. Like his colleagues Marcel Breuer and Poul Kjærholm, Visser designed his SE seats in three versions: with upholstery (SE 07), in saddle leather (SE 06), and the SE 05 in wicker. The minimalist frame of the chair leaves plenty of room for the special craftsmanship of weaving wicker. The frame of the SE 05 is made of brushed, chrome-plated metal or black powder-coated. The seat and back are made of wicker, a natural material made from the solid core of peeled rattan stems. 160 meters of wicker can go in one dining room chair! The weaving of wicker is carried out by local, specialized professionals.

The Le Corbusier LC10 Dining Table series is one of many of his designs that first exhibited at the Salon D' Automne in 1929. The Le Corbusier Table was designed in 1928 for the exhibition as part of the furnishing of the "Equipement interieur d'une habitation; des casiers, des sieges, des tables."
Le Corbusier is considered to be one of the most influential designers, artists, and architects of the 20 th century.  The Swiss-born (1887) genius was responsible for some of the enduring designs and sociological concepts that continue to impact the world around us.
Le Corbusier was born as Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, but changed his name to the single name of Le Corbusier in 1920, a vogue move by the young designer.  At an early age, Le Corbusier traveled extensively throughout Eastern Europe.  The influence of these travels can be seen in the many sketchbooks that he filled with his rendering of famous sites such as the Parthenon.
By the mid-1920s, Le Corbusier was proposing the designs of complete cities that would deal with squalor he had witnessed in Paris.  Stark urban environments with powerful architecture would be constructed with steel and glass.  Many of these urban environments would ultimately be realized in the Soviet Union, France, and Sweden.
Le Corbusier’s impact on furniture was just as forceful with the creation of lounge chairs and tables constructed of tubular steel and glass.  The LC10 Table is an excellent example of Le Corbusier’s style.  There is no excess, only functional materials that one can see completely.  It is strong, durable, and above all else, functional.
