Introduced in 1850, the No. 4 Cafe Daum bentwood chair proved to be an instant success.  The chair was first ordered by the owner of the Cafe Daum in Vienna, a meeting place for foreign correspondents and members of the Austro-Hungarian military.  The bentwood chairs were made of bent mahogany and laminated wood strips.  They later appeared in a different form as Chair No. 4 in Michael Thonet's company catalogs. Michael Thonet's B4 cafe chairs were lightweight, elegant, strong, and characterized by grace and fluidity of line which made them unique in European furniture of the period.
Through the years, many variations of the B4 bentwood chair were made.  This model is made at one of Michael Thonet's original factories located in the Czech Republic.  The factory still exists over 150 years after its inception creating bentwood in classic as well as contemporary styles.

The IntreccioTable was designed by Paolo Portoghesi for Matrix International in 2016 and introduced at the Milan Design Week that same year.   "The Intreccio aims to generate a form by building upon the constructive and formal potentialities of the three materials used: the porosity of cast iron at the base, the light, and the vaporous surface of birch, the glossiness of marble and glass. The arboreal inspiration acts as a catalyst and rules the composition by connecting the earth to the sky, as in a tree.”

The eight flowing limbs of the Intreccio have assembled asymmetrically and intertwined in the middle, thus creating a dynamic composition. The empty middle cast iron base enhances the organic form of the table, which provides a sense of grounding through its molded edge.

Jean Michel Frank was responsible for completely reinventing the dictionary of decorative arts between 1932 and 1940. He worked in Paris, New York, and South America. He was inspired by Neoclassicism and the abstraction of primitive art. He graced the 1930's period with an original and highly elegant style which soon earned him a wealthy and elitist clientele. His name became a true reference point for 20th-century furniture collectors. The decorative principles that he developed formed the basis for a minimalist style which is still popular today and continues to inspire modern designers.
Jean Michel Frank's lounge pieces are comprised of elegant, luxurious clean lines. The use of simple square and block shapes in his lounge pieces create a rich and powerful statement.
The Jean Michel Frank Armchair design is dated to 1930 but was only verifiable in photographs of interiors that he created. Jean Michel Frank never considered mass-production and as a result never took authorship of his designs, including this armchair. Despite that fact, Jean Michel Frank would exert influence on the taste of the period, and that his reinterpretation of existing designs characterized them to a point that they seemed his own. The loveseat and three-seat sofa are derivations of his armchair design.

Le Corbusier is considered to be one of the most important Modernist chair designers and architects of France. The Joe M-CU Stool was introduced at the Milan Furniture Fair in 2015.  The Joe Stool was met with great reviews.  Using styling from the modern classic era, Joe combines old with new. The back and seat are curved to provide maximum comfort, similar to the Eames plywood chair of yesteryear.  The base, developed by Midj's in-house studio, uses a contemporary metal style.  This combination works great together to produce an outstanding counter or bar stool.
In this particular version, the Joe Stool (M-CU) uses Italian hide leather with a saddle stitch for the seat and the back. The frame of the chair is steel that can be lacquered one of five different colors.

The D8P Chair, produced by Tecta, was designed by the German designer Martin Hirth in 2017.
“For me, the F51 embodies the very essence of Bauhaus furniture. I wanted to translate the silhouette and the charisma of this armchair into a plain chair,” says Hirth. In the summer of 2017 he started developing his chair, which has now acquired a new character all of its own. The D8P is the answer to the quest for a comfortable upholstered dining chair. At the same time, it pays homage to the concept of the cantilever armrest – a hallmark of the F51 – although Martin Hirth has reversed it in his version.
“The chair design consists almost exclusively out of basic geometric shapes,” explains the designer. It stands out for the combination of all disciplines in its construction and manufacturing, the integration of crafts and rational use of materials – fundamental virtues of the Bauhaus. “And it boasts another hallmark of the Bauhaus: the ability to make a lasting visual impact. These were my lines of thought for the chair. A product that will last for a long time and should not be a short-lived fad,” says Hirth. The D8P can serve as a comfortable dining chair both at home and in a restaurant setting. It straddles the line between minimalism and opulence. Martin Hirth: “I try to design products in such a way that they not only have functional properties but also emotional values. They need to exude a certain charm.”

As the name itself says, the Chair (923.01) from Tonon is made from a thin, flat, flexible, and padded form, which is bent to obtain a unique shell. The shell elements are held in place with special steel fixings which simultaneously create an attractive decoration. The shell is suspended, almost floating, on an arc of black coated aluminum, connected to its base using the same material. The slightly flexible shell gives an appearance of lightness, but also offers the highest level of seating comfort.

Ginger Armchair By Ton

In 1929 Mies van der Rohe designed the German Pavilion for the International Exposition in Barcelona, Spain. In it contained what was to become one of interior design's most famous chairs, the Pavilion Chair and Ottoman. Using flat steel and a cantilever scissor form structure, the Pavilion Ottoman has a fairly rigid structure.
Mies van der Rohe's original Pavilion Ottoman used a frame of chromium-plated steel strips with horsehair cushions resting on thick belt leather straps. The steel strip design and 'x' joint had to be welded and polished by hand in a laborious operation. The Pavilion chair's intricate leatherwork used square tiles that were sewn together, then piped and buttoned.
Mies van der Rohe was Director of the Bauhaus School from 1930-1933. In 1937 he moved to Chicago where he became the Head of the architecture department at the Illinois Institute of Technology.  During the next 15 years of his career, he designed skyscrapers for nearly every major American city.

The Dejavu 378 Bentwood Chair by Ton is a piece that dates back over 100 years.  A version of the Dejavu was seen in the 1904 Illustrated Catalogue distributed by the Thonet family.  It was referred to as the number 66/14.  This particular version features a round seat that is available in wood veneer, cane, or fabric.

Dejavu 378 Bentwood Chair By Ton

The Michael Thonet No. 135 Bentwood Stool shows off the expert craftsmanship of TON's bentwood artisans.  Through the years, many variations of the No 135 stool have been made.  This particular bentwood stool model is made at one of Michael Thonet's original factories located in the Czech Republic.  The factory still exists over 150 years after its inception creating bentwood in classic as well as contemporary styles.
In 1862, the Bistritz factory had an astonishing 800 workers producing 80,000 pieces of bentwood furniture each year.  The A14 Bentwood Chair was the largest fraction of the overall output.  This was early in the company’s history and expansion was just starting.  Plants were being set up in Russia, Poland, and Germany.  Typical workdays in factories were 12 - 14 hour days with men, women, and children all working.  Healthcare, a school, a fire department, and even a band were located at these various locations.  Today the Ton factory again has over 800 employees making these beautiful bentwood designs.

The Rioja Stool by Ton is a beautiful and well-priced contemporary stool designed for bars or kitchen counters.  The Rioja Stool uses a rounded radius on the corners of the seat to give it a soft appeal. Constructed with solid beechwood, the Rioja is as durable as it is aesthetically pleasing.
The Rioja Stool is constructed in one of the original bentwood factories set up by Michael Thonet in the 1800s. The factory has been in continuous operation since its inception in 1861. It is now just one of a handful of original bentwood furniture factories still in operation.

The Calla Seating Collection was designed by architect Fabrizio Batoni in 2019 who interpreted the needs of contemporary living through a versatile furnishing element to create an ideal chair for public and private spaces.  The Calla Stool is available in two versions, either with or without arms.  Both are characterized by a smart look made in plastic, or upholstered in a wide range of fabrics, leathers and faux leather to satisfy different preferences and lifestyles.
