The Juju hat is a symbol of prosperity and divinity in Bamileke culture. The Bamileke is an ethnic group from Cameroon's west and northeast provinces. Birds, whose feathers are used to create this elaborate headdress, are sacred to the Bamileke because their power of flight allows them to soar to the heavens. Traditionally, the Juju hat was worn by members of the high Kuosi class during Bamileke rituals and festivities. The Kuosi consisted of prominent tribal leaders, affluent landowners, and celebrated warriors. The Juju hat was worn to perform an annual dance celebrating the kingdom's prosperity.

This pillow is made with fabric that is inspired by our iconic St. Frank Guatemalan textile. The Huipil, or blouse, is a traditional female costume worn across the Mesoamerican region. This loose fitting tunic has been worn since before the arrival of the Spanish to the Americas, and remains the most common garment worn by indigenous Mesoamerican females today, particularly the Mayas in Guatemala. Huipil are created on a backstrap loom and heavily decorated with woven designs. Many weavers also incorporate intricate embroidery patterns within their weaving. The piece that inspired this fabric was used to wrap around the base of a candle for safe carrying during ceremonies.

This fabric is inspired by a vintage Muong textile. The only surviving descendants of the early Vietnamese, the Muong have maintained their traditional way of life in the mountains of northern Vietnam. In Muong culture, young girls inherit weaving techniques from their mothers beginning at an early age. The harmonious patterns are colored by natural indigo dyes. Because their religious beliefs are rooted in animism – the belief in a supernatural power that enlivens the material world – the intricate designs of their textiles are said to subtly depict the weavers’ souls.

This intricate handmade embroidery was developed by indigenous Otomí people in central Mexico. The Otomí faced an economic crisis in the 1960s caused by severe drought in their predominantly subsistence farming region. As an alternative source of income, Otomí women popularized this embroidery through the revival of an ancestral technique.
Today, skilled Otomí textile artists are in demand outside of their local communities as appreciation for this vibrant embroidery has traveled well beyond its humble origins. In recent years, Otomí embroidery has become an iconic textile print, appearing in the work of top interior and fashion designers. Even the cult French fashion house, Hermès, collaborated with Otomí artists to release an exclusive line of Hermès scarves featuring the distinctive designs.
The symbolism and iconography in this textile design reflect time-honored traditions and beliefs of harmony with nature. The whimsical flora and fauna embroidered motifs can be traced back to pre-Aztec Mesoamerica and are said to originate from cave paintings. Textile designers draw the animals and plants from memories, dreams, and mythical imagination; the forms are then embroidered. Each character bears significance. This archival print is a replica of a vintage Kuba cloth, a unique textile featuring complex designs that are created when various geometric raffia pieces are stitched to a plain raffia background. The resulting rough surface is punctuated by repeated geometric patterns with unexpected interruptions in design. Men cultivate the raffia palm and weave the raffia cloth; women then create the patterned textiles. Traditionally, Kuba cloth was used as a wrapped skirt worn during burials. Later, it was incorporated in ceremonial dress for ritual dances and other celebrations.

Kantha is a native household craft originating from women in rural Bengal. The word kantha refers to a running stitch. Classic Kantha textiles are characterized by this stitch, which is often used to produce motifs such as flowers, birds, animals, and other folk scenes from everyday activities. Kantha is traditionally used to create men’s and women’s garments, such as dhotis and saris. In addition to garments, several layers of cloth can be embroidered together to create quilts and coverings for mirrors, boxes, pillows, and other decorative objects. The Kantha stitch gives the textile a beautiful textured character.

This St. Frank pillow, made in Burkina Faso, is comprised of Burkinabe cotton, naturally dyed with mud-based pigment from the Niger river, and decorated with geometric patterns drawn over the mud pigment with soap. Mud cloth was traditionally worn by hunters, offering camouflage, ritual protection, and a sign of status. More recently, mud cloth has become a symbol of Burkinabe cultural identity and has been exported as an iconic international textile used in fashion, home design, and fine art.

In pre-Hispanic times, Mexican glassware was derived from volcanic, or obsidian, glass. The Spanish introduced clear handblown glass in Mexico during the 16th century. The first handblown glass industry arose in Puebla, before expanding into nearby states. This St. Frank piece was made in a remote town in the neighboring state of Hidalgo, where the entire community works in a family-owned factory established thirty years ago. Each piece is created through a collaborative process where it is handed from one maestro to the next until the piece is finished.

This archival print is of a suzani embroidery, which is a classic Central Asian textile characterized by flowers and meandering vines, made with a tambour hook. Though Uzbek stitched, the motif presented here is Turkish - a tree of life. Suzani tree of life designs represent three spheres: the roots spring from the underworld, the trunk rises through the terrestrial world, and the branches reach the heavens. These textiles are traditionally used as wall hangings or as a woman's marriage dowry, as the fruit designs are symbolic of fertility. The suzani's decorative embroidery is also thought to possess a protective element.

This St. Frank archival print is a replica of the delicate textile pieces created in the Bamako workshop of Aboubakar Fofana. As a calligrapher, artist, and textile designer, Fofana studied in Japan and France, as well as Mali. These trades and diverse cultures strongly influence his work. Fofana is driven by a passion to preserve and revitalize West Africa's nearly lost tradition of natural indigo dyeing. To do this, Fofana studied with the finest living indigo dye masters while developing his craft. The artist also grows organic cotton and indigo to make his own dyes, systematically training local craftsman and farmers in these sustainable practices.

Mud Cloth I - Lumbar Pillow

The woven textile is carefully applied to a linen substrate, which provides a border between the textile and frame. This product is offered in a lucite framed. A natural flax linen is paired with the lucite. Our signature gold St. Frank plate is featured in the bottom right-hand corner of each piece.
Johanna Bramble's work combines a modern aesthetic with traditional textile weaving. The artist, a Senegalese designer, is passionate about preserving time-honored weaving methods. She has a strong contemporary curiosity, leading her to incorporate new materials into her creations. This allows her to work through heritage textiles to reveal new insights. Bramble believes weaving is a universal language. Here, her work is exhibited inside out to reveal the process of making. The Senegalese weaving technique Bramble employs is rare today - shared with few other countries in the world. It requires two people and meticulous execution. One weaver, the apprenti, assists the other. Coordination between the two allows for the creation of elaborate patterns, such as the hexagon motifs on this piece. This approach is the precursor for mechanized Jacquard weaving that is common today. Woven textiles, or serru rabal in the Wolof language, are the most cared for objects in a Senegalese home. They are treasured by women who dress their fabrics with incense. These textiles, loaded with symbolic meaning, are presented at specific moments in life, from birth to death. Even today, serru rabal are used as a shield against evil. Bramble's contemporary pattern displays the hexagon - a symbol of wisdom, life, and health present in Islamic, Christian, and Judaic history. Bramble created both the positive and negative versions of this symbol to reinforce the idea of unity and complementarity, much like the concept of yin-yang in Eastern thought.

Provenance

This pillow is made from fabric that is inspired by Kuba cloth, a unique textile featuring complex designs that are created when various geometric raffia pieces are stitched to a plain raffia background. The resulting rough surface is punctuated by repeated geometric patterns with unexpected interruptions in design. Men cultivate the raffia palm and weave the raffia cloth; women then create the patterned textiles. Traditionally, Kuba cloth was used as a wrapped skirt worn during burials. Later, it was incorporated in ceremonial dress for ritual dances and other celebrations.
