Provenance

This vintage St. Frank piece was created in Uzbekistan and consist of silk embroidery on a cotton backing. Suzani embroidery, which is made with a tambour hook, is a classic Central Asian textile characterized by flowers and meandering vines. Though Uzbek stitched, the motif presented here is Turkish - a tree of life. Suzani tree of life designs represent three spheres: the roots spring from the underworld, the trunk rises through the terrestrial world, and the branches reach the heavens. These textiles are traditionally used as wall hangings or as a woman's marriage dowry, as the fruit designs are symbolic of fertility. The suzani's decorative embroidery is also thought to possess a protective element.

The art of bronze casting has a long and rich history in West Africa.  Historically, bronze artists of the Bamileke, native to Cameroon's West and Northwest regions, have received immersive training, completed apprenticeships, and continued the art of the lost-wax casting method.  In this tradition, a rough clay core is molded and then covered by a layer of bee's wax.  The wax is carved and shaped into the desired design, then covered with more clay.  Next, the mold is baked to melt and drain the wax, leaving an empty space between the inner and outer clay layers.  Molten metal is carefully poured into the chamber, hardening to create the final shape.  Finally, the outer layer of clay is chipped off, revealing the metal within.

Rare to be found in the U.S., these beautiful sheepskins are of the oldest race of sheep in Sweden. Unique to the island of Gotland, they are renowned for their silvery-grey colored wool, silky-to-the-touch curls (or ‘purls’ as they are known), and supreme suppleness. The fleece is fine, long, lustrous and dense and can appear in all shades of grey, from almost white to silver to charcoal-grey and dark enough to be almost black. A luxuriously decorative accessory, the Gotland sheepskin throw can be used to drape over an armchair or sofa or used as a throw rug at the side of your bed. The possibilities are endless. The Tai Lue people, an indigenous ethnic group living in Ban ViengKeo village in northwest Laos, are famous for their elephants and their cotton. The first Tai Lue families settled this fertile area in 1948 with three elephants, and these animals have continued to be core to village life. Every February, the Tai Lue throw a festival celebrating the elephants and blessing them with long life and good health. In addition, Tai Lue weavers are known across Laos for their cotton farming, spinning, and weaving skills. This piece was created from hand spun cotton to celebrate the annual elephant festival.

Within Miao families, weaving is taught from mother to daughter. Once the daughter masters this complex craft, she is considered ready for marriage.

This intricate, handmade, St. Frank embroidery was developed by indigenous Otomí people in central Mexico. The Otomí faced an economic crisis in the 1960s caused by severe drought in their predominantly subsistence farming region. As an alternative source of income, Otomí women popularized this embroidery through the revival of an ancestral technique.
Today, skilled Otomí textile artists are in demand outside of their local communities as appreciation for this vibrant embroidery has traveled well beyond its humble origins. In recent years, Otomí embroidery has become an iconic textile print, appearing in the work of top interior and fashion designers. Even the cult French fashion house, Hermès, collaborated with Otomí artists to release an exclusive line of Hermès scarves featuring the distinctive designs.
The symbolism and iconography in this textile design reflect time-honored traditions and beliefs of harmony with nature. The whimsical flora and fauna embroidered motifs can be traced back to pre-Aztec Mesoamerica and are said to originate from cave paintings. Textile designers draw the animals and plants from memories, dreams, and mythical imagination; the forms are then embroidered.
