The animal was revered in Inca times and possessed a religious significance; only royalty were allowed to wear the fine textile. Alpaca herds are bred specifically for their fiber, woven into the signature Peruvian textile. Baby alpaca fiber is especially luxurious, soft, and beautiful. This throw was handcrafted in Peru from 100% Peruvian baby alpaca. The alpaca is sheared, leaving the animal unharmed and handled ethically.

In pre-Hispanic times, Mexican glassware was derived from volcanic, or obsidian, glass. The Spanish introduced clear handblown glass in Mexico during the 16th century. The first handblown glass industry arose in Puebla, before expanding into nearby states. This St. Frank piece was made in a remote town in the neighboring state of Hidalgo, where the entire community works in a family-owned factory established thirty years ago. Each piece is created through a collaborative process where it is handed from one maestro to the next until the piece is finished.

This bedding is inspired by Kuba cloth, a unique textile featuring complex designs that are created when various geometric raffia pieces are stitched to a plain raffia background. The resulting rough surface is punctuated by repeated geometric patterns with unexpected interruptions in design. Men cultivate the raffia palm and weave the raffia cloth; women then create the patterned textiles. Traditionally, Kuba cloth was used as a wrapped skirt worn during burials. Later, it was incorporated in ceremonial dress for ritual dances and other celebrations.

This surfboard brings together the quality of legendary shaper Gary Linden of Linden Surfboards and our St. Frank Miao textile pattern. Gary Linden has been a surfer for over 50 years and has been shaping boards for almost as long. He is a founder of the Big Wave Tour and is the oldest active big wave surfer today. This collaboration combines the highest standards of a functional surfboard with artistic expression that can live on the water or your walls. This pattern is inspired by a vintage Miao wedding blanket. The Miao are an ethnic minority group from the mountainous provenances of southern China. Wedding blankets were woven in cotton and silk by the bride and her family as a gift to the groom and his family. The brocades feature elaborate geometric motifs that require a high level of skill. Within Miao families, weaving is taught from mother to daughter. Once the daughter masters this complex craft, she is considered ready for marriage.

This piece is handmade from red clay, or barro rojo, from the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. The clay is hand formed without the aid of a potter’s wheel. Then, the piece is finished with a red clay slip to create a unique texture. In pre-Hispanic times, this technique was used to create comales, a round flat tool used in the kitchen to cook tortillas. Today, the women of the central valley of Oaxaca continue to practice this craft. The technique is passed down from generation to generation, from mother to daughter.
This vessel is hand-molded from red clay.

Please note that red clay is porous. While these types of vessels are commonly used to contain liquid in Mexico, they will sweat out the liquid and leave charming white rings around the red clay. Traditionally, they are set on the table with a cloth when used to serve liquid. If you wish to avoid condensation or color change, place a glass or plastic container within the vessel to hold water for flowers or plants, for example, or use them purely decoratively.

Dye vats alone take a full week to prepare and require daily stirring. The un-dyed cloth is pinched, sewn, and tied according to precise patterns. Once dye is applied to the material, the ties are removed, revealing patterns of lines, shells, dots, or tracery. Our fabric by the yard is made of Belgian linen and cotton, and printed in the USA.

Woven textiles, or serru rabal in the Wolof language, are the most cared for objects in a Senegalese home. These textiles, loaded with symbolic meaning, are presented at special occasions. Even today, they are used as a shield against evil. This contemporary pattern features the hexagon – a symbol of wisdom, life, and health present in Islamic, Christian, and Judaic history. Both the positive and negative versions of this symbol displayed in this piece reinforce the idea of unity and complementarity, much like the concept of yin-yang in Eastern thought. The weaving technique employed to create this pillow requires two people and meticulous execution. One weaver, the apprenti, assists the other. Coordination between the two allows for the creation of elaborate patterns.

The Yoruba people of western and northern Nigeria are well known for their use of gourds, including traditional art applications. The calabash, a hard-shelled gourd, is dried and carved with motifs ranging from symbols of gods to geometric patterns. Day to day, the calabash is used in the kitchen to serve food and drink, but it is also used for special occasions and rituals. For example, calabashes holding the kola nut are presented to wedding guests as a symbol of hospitality and friendship.
