Provenance

These glass beads are made by the Ashanti and Krobo people in the Krobo mountains of Ghana. Glass powder is colored with ceramic dyes, then poured into clay molds with a cassava stalk set down the middle. The beads are then cooked in a clay kiln, fusing the glass powder. The cassava stalk burns, leaving a hole for threading the beads. Glass beads are integral to modern Krobo life. They are used in ceremonies of birth, coming of age, marriage, and death, as well as festivals and parades.

Provenance

This wooden fertility doll ornament is inspired by a traditional Ashanti Akua’ba doll. Its history originates in southern Ghana with the legend of Akua, an Ashanti woman who could not get pregnant, sought the help of local spiritual leaders, and commissioned the woodcarving of a small wooden doll. The woman cared for the doll as if it were her own baby and soon became pregnant. As a result, the village named the figurine “Akua” “ba,” meaning Akua’s child. Deeply rooted in Ashanti culture, this tale continues to inspire the use of these dolls. Both infertile and newly pregnant women carry Akua’ba dolls on their backs, dress them, adorn them with jewelry, bathe them, and put them to bed. This ritual practice is thought to bring fertility, health, happiness, beauty, and, ultimately, a safe delivery. Upon giving birth to a daughter, many mothers will pass the doll on to the next generation to teach maternal care and spread good fortune.

This zip pouch is created from fabric inspired by Kuba cloth, a unique Congolese textile featuring complex designs that are created when various geometric raffia pieces are stitched to a plain raffia background. The resulting rough surface is punctuated by repeated geometric patterns with unexpected interruptions in design. Men cultivate the raffia palm and weave the raffia cloth; women then create the patterned textiles. Traditionally, Kuba cloth was used as a wrapped skirt worn during burials. Later, it was incorporated in ceremonial dress for ritual dances and other celebrations.

The first handblown glass industry arose in Puebla, before expanding into nearby states. This St. Frank piece was made in a remote town in the neighboring state of Hidalgo, where the entire community works in a family-owned factory established thirty years ago. Each piece is created through a collaborative process where it is handed from one maestro to the next until the piece is finished.

Provenance

This mask is woven by women from the Emberá tribe of the southern Darien rainforests of Panama. Emberá masks depict local animals and animal spirits. They are made from split palm leaves, dyed naturally, and woven in the home. Each piece is a creative expression of the weaver; therefore no two pieces are exactly the same. Emberá shamans, religious authorities that link man with the spirit world, use these masks in healing and cleansing rituals, hanging them from posts and the ceiling of the hut in which the rites take place.

This pillow is made from fabric inspired by our vintage Cactus Silk textiles, created by Berber people, indigenous to North Africa. Berber textiles can be identified by region and tribe, detailed with stripes and symbols. The small symbols seen here mimic traditional tattoos that adorn Berber women. The symbols have many meanings, such as longevity, fertility, protection against the evil eye, cures for illnesses, tribal association, and marital status. These textiles were traditionally made from the silk of the Sabra Cactus, but are now made from an alternate natural fiber.

Provenance

The Agaseke, Rwanda's oldest traditional basket, is now called the Peace Basket, as it has become a symbol of unity to the post-genocide nation. The Agaseke was traditionally used for transporting gifts. Today, it is a cultural emblem that represents generosity, gratitude, and compassion. These St. Frank coasters are created in the same traditional weaving technique of the Agaseke. They are handmade by women whose family members were either killed in the 1994 genocide or are imprisoned for genocide-related crimes. Weaving has provided the women with socioeconomic opportunity and rebuilt a devastated community. May these coasters offer peace and hope for a brighter future!

This piece is handmade from red clay, or barro rojo, from the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. The clay is hand formed without the aid of a potter's wheel. Then, the piece is finished with a red clay slip to create a unique texture. In pre-Hispanic times, this technique was used to create comales, a round flat tool used in the kitchen to cook tortillas. Today, the women of the central valley of Oaxaca continue to practice this craft. The technique is passed down from generation to generation, from mother to daughter.

This piece is handmade from black clay, or barro negro, from the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. The black color is the result of a natural oxidation process, free of chemicals, lead, or glaze. The use of Oaxacan black clay to produce pottery dates back to Zapotec times, when it featured a matte grey finish. In the 1950’s, a potter of Zapotec ancestry developed the beautiful patina seen today by burnishing the pottery before putting it in the kiln. This St. Frank piece has been fired at a high temperature, a technique used in the Oaxacan valley for centuries to reduce porousness and increase durability in Mezcal and water containers.

Etkie works with Native American artisans in New Mexico to create jewelry inspired by the landscape and culture of the Southwest. St. Frank and Etkie collaborated to design this contemporary cuff based on antique Navajo rug motifs. Each piece is hand-beaded on a traditional Navajo loom. The diamond design represents the Navajo homeland surrounded by four sacred mountains. The cross signifies the deity Na'ashjéii Asdzáá, or Spider Grandmother, who taught the Navajo the art of weaving and is their constant helper and benefactor. The Vallero Star - vallero meaning "of the valley" in Spanish - was adapted from Spanish weaving.

This indigo, or "gold blue," is a sign of prestige and a symbol of the link between heaven and earth. Through a careful process, indigo can produce a vast palette of blue hues; traditional dyers would ask their customers' color preferences, from the palest sky to the deepest midnight. Dye vats alone take a full week to prepare and require daily stirring. The un-dyed cloth is pinched, sewn, and tied according to precise patterns. Once dye is applied to the material, the ties are removed, revealing patterns of lines, shells, dots, or tracery.

This St. Frank iPhone case depicts a vintage Muong textile. The only surviving descendants of the early Vietnamese, the Muong have maintained their traditional way of life in the mountains of northern Vietnam. In Muong culture, young girls inherit weaving techniques from their mothers beginning at an early age. The harmonious patterns are colored by natural indigo dyes. Because their religious beliefs are rooted in animism – the belief in a supernatural power that enlivens the material world – the intricate designs of their textiles are said to subtly depict the weavers’ souls.

The alpaca is a South American camelid that lives in the heights of the Andes, more than 13,000 feet above sea level. The animal was revered in Inca times and possessed a religious significance; only royalty were allowed to wear the fine textile. The alpaca was almost wiped out by the Spanish conquistadores in the 16th century in order to create grazing land for sheep. However, due to their resilience against harsh weather conditions, some herds were able to survive in the high Andes. In the 19th century, a renewed interest in alpaca fiber and textiles led to a revival of the alpaca in Peru. Today, alpaca herds are bred specifically for their fiber, woven into the signature Peruvian textile.

This sachet is made with a vintage piece from Uzbekistan, handmade in the traditional suzani embroidery technique and consists of delicate silk embroidery on a silk-cotton blend backing. Suzani, which is embroidered with a tambour hook, is a classic Central Asian textile characterized by flowers and meandering vines. A specialist known as a chizmachi draws out the suzani pattern, then each fabric strip is given to an embroiderer, and finally the finished pieces are sewn back together. The result is a grand work created by several hands, producing charming irregularities and subtle mismatches that balance out the precision of the stitch. The flower designs seen here are symbolic of fertility and fruitfulness. These textiles are traditionally used as wall hangings or as a woman's marriage dowry. The suzani's decorative embroidery is also thought to possess a protective element.

Women from the indigenous Aymara group of Andean South America have practiced frazada weaving since pre-Colombian times. Weavers create colorful strips from hand-sheared sheep's wool on a backstrap loom. Then, two pieces are sewn together to create a frazada. Offering lively warmth and sturdy thickness, frazadas were originally used as blankets, created to protect against the chill of the Andean highlands. Today, these textiles are popular for their use as bright rugs and picnic blankets.

This St. Frank iPhone case depicts a vintage Miao wedding blanket. The Miao are an ethnic minority group from the mountainous provenances of southern China. Wedding blankets were woven in cotton and silk by the bride and her family as a gift to the groom and his family. The brocades feature elaborate geometric motifs that require a high level of skill. Within Miao families, weaving is taught from mother to daughter. Once the daughter masters this complex craft, she is considered ready for marriage.

This art piece is made with a vintage piece textile created in Turkey and reveals a traditional Turkish design, known as the chintamani - three dots placed over two curved lines. This iconic motif is thought to originate from Buddhist philosophy and represent a wish-granting jewel. Repeated patterns such as these are characteristic of the decorative textiles found along the Silk Road. This original textile was created with a crochet technique and is made from silk thread on a silk-cotton blend backing.
