Inspired by a vintage St. Frank piece created in Uzbekistan, this suzani tree of life design represents three spheres: the roots spring from the underworld, the trunk rises through the terrestrial world, and the branches reach the heavens. Traditionally used for wall hangings or as a woman's marriage dowry, the flower designs are symbolic of fertility and fruitfulness. This wallpaper is inspired by a vintage textile created in Turkey and reveals a traditional Turkish design, known as the chintamani - three dots placed over two curved lines. This iconic motif is thought to originate from Buddhist philosophy and represent a wish-granting jewel. Repeated patterns such as these are characteristic of the decorative textiles found along the Silk Road. The original textile was created with a crochet technique and is made from silk thread on a silk-cotton blend backing.

Chintamani - Wallpaper

The Mossi people are renowned for their fine cotton weaving, a craft they have been practicing for centuries. According to one Mossi creation myth, the first Mossi ancestor descended to earth on the threads of his loom. Weaving is traditionally done in rural Mossi villages during the dry season. First, the cotton is spun and dyed by the women of the village. Then, the men use a narrow loom to weave the cotton into long strips. Finally, the strips are sewn together to create the complete textile. Common designs are animal motifs or geometric motifs, such as the linear pattern exhibited on this fabric.

These glass beads are made by the Ashanti and Krobo people in the Krobo mountains of Ghana. Glass powder is colored with ceramic dyes, then poured into clay molds with a cassava stalk set down the middle. The beads are then cooked in a clay kiln, fusing the glass powder. The cassava stalk burns, leaving a hole for threading the beads. Glass beads are integral to modern Krobo life. They are used in ceremonies of birth, coming of age, marriage, and death, as well as festivals and parades.

Kantha is a native household craft originating from women in rural Bengal. The word kantha refers to a running stitch. Classic Kantha textiles are characterized by this stitch, which is often used to produce motifs such as flowers, birds, animals, and other folk scenes from everyday activities. Kantha is traditionally used to create men’s and women’s garments, such as dhotis and saris. In addition to garments, several layers of cloth can be embroidered together to create quilts and coverings for mirrors, boxes, pillows, and other decorative objects. The Kantha stitch gives the textile a beautiful textured character.

The only surviving descendants of the early Vietnamese, the Muong have maintained their traditional way of life in the mountains of northern Vietnam. In Muong culture, young girls inherit weaving techniques from their mothers beginning at an early age. The harmonious patterns are colored by natural indigo dyes. Because their religious beliefs are rooted in animism – the belief in a supernatural power that enlivens the material world – the intricate designs of their textiles are said to subtly depict the weavers’ souls.

Through a careful process, indigo can produce a vast palette of blue hues, from the palest sky to the deepest midnight. Dye vats take a full week to prepare and require daily stirring. The un-dyed cloth is pinched, sewn, and tied according to precise patterns. Once dyed, the ties are removed, revealing patterns of lines, shells, dots, or tracery.

Light Vines Indigo - Wallpaper

This piece is handmade from black clay, or barro negro, from the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. The black color is the result of a natural oxidation process, free of chemicals, lead, or glaze. The use of Oaxacan black clay to produce pottery dates back to Zapotec times, when it featured a matte grey finish. In the 1950's, a potter of Zapotec ancestry developed the beautiful patina seen today by burnishing the pottery before putting it in the kiln. This St. Frank piece has been fired at a high temperature, a technique used in the Oaxacan valley for centuries to reduce porousness and increase durability in Mezcal and water containers.
This vessel is hand-molded from black clay.

Please note that black clay is porous. While these types of vessels are commonly used to contain liquid in Mexico, they will sweat out the liquid and leave charming white rings around the black clay. Traditionally, they are set on the table with a cloth when used to serve liquid. If you wish to avoid condensation or color change, place a glass or plastic container within the vessel to hold water for flowers or plants, for example, or use them purely decoratively.

The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a holiday held throughout Mexico on All Saints' Day that combines Aztec and Spanish Catholic traditions. This day is a fantastic celebration of the lives of deceased ancestors and friends, filled with food, singing, dancing, and games. The deceased are believed to awaken to share in the festivities. Traditionally, families decorate tombs and build altars, or ofrendas, as an offering to the dead. The altars are piled with cempasúchil (marigolds known as the flower of the dead), candles, the deceased's favorite foods, and skulls made of candy or clay. These whimsical St. Frank skulls symbolize death and rebirth and are decorated with bright colors that reflect the joy & spirit of lost loved ones.

In pre-Hispanic times, Mexican glassware was derived from volcanic, or obsidian, glass. The Spanish introduced clear handblown glass in Mexico during the 16th century. The first handblown glass industry arose in Puebla, before expanding into nearby states. This St. Frank piece was made in a remote town in the neighboring state of Hidalgo, where the entire community works in a family-owned factory established thirty years ago. Each piece is created through a collaborative process where it is handed from one maestro to the next until the piece is finished.
