This wooden fertility doll is inspired by a traditional Ashanti Akua’ba doll. Its history originates in southern Ghana with the legend of Akua, an Ashanti woman who could not get pregnant, sought the help of local spiritual leaders, and commissioned the woodcarving of a small wooden doll. The woman cared for the doll as if it were her own baby and soon became pregnant. As a result, the village named the figurine “Akua” “ba,” meaning Akua’s child. Deeply rooted in Ashanti culture, this tale continues to inspire the use of these dolls. Both infertile and newly pregnant women carry Akua’ba dolls on their backs, dress them, adorn them with jewelry, bathe them, and put them to bed. This ritual practice is thought to bring fertility, health, happiness, beauty, and, ultimately, a safe delivery. Upon giving birth to a daughter, many mothers will pass the doll on to the next generation to teach maternal care and spread good fortune.

Carved by the Bamileke tribe of Cameroon, this stool served as seating during ceremonies. The largest and best stools were reserved for the King’s use. The stool is carved from a single piece of wood from the trunk of the Cola tree. The wood is soaked in water to soften it before carving. If there is any break in the wood during carving, it is considered a bad omen and the entire piece is abandoned. After carving, the piece is stained and lacquered. The intricate woven pattern of this stool represents the web of the earth spider, a Bamileke symbol of wisdom.

The Tai Lue people, an indigenous ethnic group living in Ban ViengKeo village in northwest Laos, are famous for their elephants and their cotton. The first Tai Lue families settled this fertile area in 1948 with three elephants, and these animals have continued to be core to village life. Every February, the Tai Lue throw a festival celebrating the elephants and blessing them with long life and good health. In addition, Tai Lue weavers are known across Laos for their cotton farming, spinning, and weaving skills. This piece was created from hand spun cotton and natural dyes to celebrate the annual elephant festival.

Provenance

Ironwood craft originated in the northwestern state of Sonora, from the Seri and Yaqui indigenous communities, before traveling down to the southern state of Oaxaca. Ironwood working is a collaborative process; the men create the rough shape of a piece by cutting wood with a machete, then women file in the details and add the final polish. Traditionally, ironwood was used to create a mortar, or molcajete, for grinding spices.

Each piece is created through a collaborative process where it is handed from one maestro to the next until the piece is finished.

The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a holiday held throughout Mexico on All Saints' Day that combines Aztec and Spanish Catholic traditions. This day is a fantastic celebration of the lives of deceased ancestors and friends, filled with food, singing, dancing, and games. The deceased are believed to awaken to share in the festivities. Traditionally, families decorate tombs and build altars, or ofrendas, as an offering to the dead. The altars are piled with cempasúchil (marigolds known as the flower of the dead), candles, the deceased's favorite foods, and skulls made of candy or clay. Considered one of the most significant textiles of the African subcontinent, kente cloth was historically made from silk, reserved for chiefs and kings, and worn as festive dress on special occasions, such as a gathering of elders or the inauguration of new royalty. The cultivation and extraction of natural indigo has been rooted in India for over 4,000 years. The technique of extracting indigo blue, historically considered the rarest and most regal color, was a closely guarded family secret, passed down from generation to generation. Through a careful process, indigo can produce a vast palette of blue hues, from the palest sky to the deepest midnight. Dye vats alone take a full week to prepare and require daily stirring. The un-dyed cloth is pinched, sewn, and tied according to precise patterns. Once dye is applied to the material, the ties are removed, revealing patterns of lines, shells, dots, or tracery. Our artisans in western India continue the ancient tradition of indigo dyeing by hand.

This piece is handmade from black clay, or barro negro, from the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. The black color is the result of a natural oxidation process, free of chemicals, lead, or glaze. The use of Oaxacan black clay to produce pottery dates back to Zapotec times, when it featured a matte grey finish. In the 1950's, a potter of Zapotec ancestry developed the beautiful patina seen today by burnishing the pottery before putting it in the kiln. This St. Frank piece has been fired at a high temperature, a technique used in the Oaxacan valley for centuries to reduce porousness and increase durability in Mezcal and water containers.

This vase is hand-molded from black clay.
Please note that black clay is porous. While these types of vessels are commonly used to contain liquid in Mexico, they will sweat out the liquid and leave charming white rings around the black clay. Traditionally, they are set on the table with a cloth when used to serve liquid. If you wish to avoid condensation or color change, place a glass or plastic container within the vessel to hold water for flowers or plants, for example, or use them purely decoratively.
