This wallpaper is a replica of a vintage piece from Uzbekistan was handmade in the traditional suzani embroidery technique and consists of delicate silk embroidery on a silk-cotton blend backing. Suzani, which is embroidered with a tambour hook, is a classic Central Asian textile characterized by flowers and meandering vines. A specialist known as a chizmachi draws out the suzani pattern, then each fabric strip is given to an embroiderer, and finally the finished pieces are sewn back together. The result is a grand work created by several hands, producing charming irregularities and subtle mismatches that balance out the precision of the stitch. Cabana Anthology

This piece is handmade from black clay, or barro negro, from the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. The black color is the result of a natural oxidation process, free of chemicals, lead, or glaze. The use of Oaxacan black clay to produce pottery dates back to Zapotec times, when it featured a matte grey finish. In the 1950's, a potter of Zapotec ancestry developed the beautiful patina seen today by burnishing the pottery before putting it in the kiln. This St. Frank piece has been fired at a high temperature, a technique used in the Oaxacan valley for centuries to reduce porousness and increase durability in Mezcal and water containers.

This wallpaper is inspired by Kuba cloth, a unique textile featuring complex designs that are created when various geometric raffia pieces are stitched to a plain raffia background. The resulting rough surface is punctuated by repeated geometric patterns with unexpected interruptions in design. Men cultivate the raffia palm and weave the raffia cloth; women then create the patterned textiles. Traditionally, Kuba cloth was used as a wrapped skirt worn during burials. Later, it was incorporated in ceremonial dress for ritual dances and other celebrations.

The Mossi people are renowned for their fine cotton weaving, a craft they have been practicing for centuries. According to one Mossi creation myth, the first Mossi ancestor descended to earth on the threads of his loom. Weaving is traditionally done in rural Mossi villages during the dry season. First, the cotton is spun and dyed by the women of the village. Then, the men use a narrow loom to weave the cotton into long strips. Finally, the strips are sewn together to create the complete textile. Common designs are animal motifs or geometric motifs, such as the linear pattern exhibited on this pillow.

The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a holiday held throughout Mexico on All Saints' Day that combines Aztec and Spanish Catholic traditions. This day is a fantastic celebration of the lives of deceased ancestors and friends, filled with food, singing, dancing, and games. The deceased are believed to awaken to share in the festivities. Traditionally, families decorate tombs and build altars, or ofrendas, as an offering to the dead. The altars are piled with cempasúchil (marigolds known as the flower of the dead), candles, the deceased's favorite foods, and skulls made of candy or clay. This pillow is made from fabric i nspired by a vintage Muong textile. The only surviving descendants of the early Vietnamese, the Muong have maintained their traditional way of life in the mountains of northern Vietnam. In Muong culture, young girls inherit weaving techniques from their mothers beginning at an early age. The harmonious patterns are colored by natural indigo dyes. Because their religious beliefs are rooted in animism – the belief in a supernatural power that enlivens the material world – the intricate designs of their textiles are said to subtly depict the weavers’ souls.

This wallpaper is inspired by our iconic St. Frank Guatemalan textile. The Huipil, or blouse, is a traditional female costume worn across the Mesoamerican region. This loose fitting tunic has been worn since before the arrival of the Spanish to the Americas, and remains the most common garment worn by indigenous Mesoamerican females today, particularly the Mayas in Guatemala. Huipil are created on a backstrap loom and heavily decorated with woven designs. Many weavers also incorporate intricate embroidery patterns within their weaving. The piece that inspired this fabric was used to wrap around the base of a candle for safe carrying during ceremonies.

The alpaca is a South American camelid that lives in the heights of the Andes, more than 13,000 feet above sea level. The animal was revered in Inca times and possessed a religious significance; only royalty were allowed to wear the fine textile. The alpaca was almost wiped out by the Spanish conquistadores in the 16th century in order to create grazing land for sheep. However, due to their resilience against harsh weather conditions, some herds were able to survive in the high Andes. In the 19th century, a renewed interest in alpaca fiber and textiles led to a revival of the alpaca in Peru. Today, alpaca herds are bred specifically for their fiber, woven into the signature Peruvian textile.

Weavers create colorful strips from hand-sheared sheep's wool on a backstrap loom. Then, two pieces are sewn together to create a frazada. Offering lively warmth and sturdy thickness, frazadas were originally used as blankets, created to protect against the chill of the Andean highlands. Today, these textiles are popular for their use as bright rugs and picnic blankets.

This textile is finished with our flax linen backing and closed by an exposed zipper with a gold pull. The cushion is stuffed with an oversized down insert.

Technicolor Frazada - Throw Pillow

The Mossi people are renowned for their fine cotton weaving, a craft they have been practicing for centuries. According to one Mossi creation myth, the first Mossi ancestor descended to earth on the threads of his loom. Weaving is traditionally done in rural Mossi villages during the dry season. First, the cotton is spun and dyed by the women of the village. Then, the men use a narrow loom to weave the cotton into long strips. Finally, the strips are sewn together to create the complete textile. Common designs are animal motifs or geometric motifs, such as the linear pattern exhibited on this pillow.
