Though Uzbek stitched, the motif presented here is Turkish - a tree of life. Pistachio Baby Alpaca Throw - Blanket

This vintage piece from Uzbekistan was handmade in the traditional suzani embroidery technique and consists of delicate silk embroidery on a silk backing. Suzani embroidery, which is made with a tambour hook, is a classic Central Asian textile characterized by flowers and meandering vines. A specialist known as a chizmachi draws out the suzani pattern, then each fabric strip is given to an embroiderer, and finally the finished pieces are sewn back together. The result is a grand work created by several hands, producing charming irregularities and subtle mismatches that balance out the precision of the stitch. The flower designs here are symbolic of fertility and fruitfulness. These textiles are traditionally used as wall hangings or as a woman's marriage dowry. The suzani's decorative embroidery is also thought to possess a protective element.
The embroidered textile is carefully applied to a linen substrate and bordered with a traditional linen-covered mat board. This product is available in our lucite frame. Our signature gold St. Frank plate is featured in the bottom right-hand corner of each piece.

Provenance

These glass beads are made by the Ashanti and Krobo people in the Krobo mountains of Ghana. Glass powder is colored with ceramic dyes, then poured into clay molds with a cassava stalk set down the middle. The beads are then cooked in a clay kiln, fusing the glass powder. The cassava stalk burns, leaving a hole for threading the beads. Glass beads are integral to modern Krobo life. They are used in ceremonies of birth, coming of age, marriage, and death, as well as festivals and parades.

Mud cloth is a traditional West African textile. As the name suggests, the fabric is created by using fermented mud to produce pigment for dye. This St. Frank pillow, made in Burkina Faso, is comprised of Burkinabe cotton, naturally dyed with mud-based pigment from the Niger river, and decorated with geometric patterns drawn over the mud pigment with soap. Mud cloth was traditionally worn by hunters, offering camouflage, ritual protection, and a sign of status. More recently, mud cloth has become a symbol of Burkinabe cultural identity and has been exported as an iconic international textile used in fashion, home design, and fine art.

Considered one of the most significant textiles of the African subcontinent, kente cloth was historically made from silk, reserved for chiefs and kings, and worn as festive dress on special occasions, such as a gathering of elders or the inauguration of new royalty. To create kente cloth, individual textiles are woven, cut up, and sewn together in elaborate patchwork patterns. The word kente is derived from kenten - the word for basket in the Twi language of the Ghana-Togo mountains _ because of the resemblance between the woven patchwork textile and the region's baskets. In addition to being worn on special occasions, kente cloth has traditionally appeared in other prominent ceremonial objects, including drums, shields, fans, and umbrellas. This style of kente cloth comes from the Ewe people of Togo and Ghana.

This image is a still life of a historic chandelier located in Chapultepec Castle in Chapultepec Park, the largest park in the Americas. This photo series is a limited edition collaboration with Brooklyn-based photographer, Robert Malmberg, exploring Mexico City through the lens of the traveler. “The energy of Mexico City was at once vibrant and permeating, bursting with exotic desert plants and primary colors,” notes Malmberg. In six photographs, he presents many facets of Mexico City and the area around. This piece is a closeup of cactus growing in desert garden at the National Museum of Anthropology. Robert Malmberg is an award-wining photographer and filmmaker specializing in studio portraiture, still life, travel, and fine art photography. He also shoots with the historic wet collodion process, combining hand mixed darkroom recipes with antique large format cameras.

In pre-Hispanic times, Mexican glassware was derived from volcanic, or obsidian, glass. The Spanish introduced clear handblown glass in Mexico during the 16th century. The first handblown glass industry arose in Puebla, before expanding into nearby states. This St. Frank piece was made in a remote town in the neighboring state of Hidalgo, where the entire community works in a family-owned factory established thirty years ago. Each piece is created through a collaborative process where it is handed from one maestro to the next until the piece is finished.

Parroquia San Juan Bautista

This matchbox is printed with a replica of a vintage Kuba cloth, a unique textile featuring complex designs that are created when various geometric raffia pieces are stitched to a plain raffia background. The resulting rough surface is punctuated by repeated geometric patterns with unexpected interruptions in design. Men cultivate the raffia palm and weave the raffia cloth; women then create the patterned textiles. Traditionally, Kuba cloth was used as a wrapped skirt worn during burials. Later, it was incorporated in ceremonial dress for ritual dances and other celebrations.

Each piece, whether it's the durable and stunning Jobillo, the slow-growing and decay-resistant Ziricote, or the Pixi wood picked just at the right moment to achieve its one of a kind map-like lines, is hand-finished in a non-toxic, food-safe beeswax paste derived from local bees.

Provenance

Etkie works with Native American artisans in New Mexico to create jewelry inspired by the landscape and culture of the Southwest. St. Frank and Etkie collaborated to design this contemporary cuff based on antique Navajo rug motifs. Each piece is hand-beaded on a traditional Navajo loom. The diamond design represents the Navajo homeland surrounded by four sacred mountains. The cross signifies the deity Na'ashjéii Asdzáá, or Spider Grandmother, who taught the Navajo the art of weaving and is their constant helper and benefactor. The Vallero Star - vallero meaning "of the valley" in Spanish - was adapted from Spanish weaving.

Classic - Wrapping Paper

This bedding is inspired by the Mossi people, renowned for their fine cotton weaving, a craft they have been practicing for centuries. According to one Mossi creation myth, the first Mossi ancestor descended to earth on the threads of his loom. Weaving is traditionally done in rural Mossi villages during the dry season. First, the cotton is spun and dyed by the women of the village. Then, the men use a narrow loom to weave the cotton into long strips. Finally, the strips are sewn together to create the complete textile. Common designs are animal motifs or geometric motifs, such as the linear pattern exhibited on this pillow.

Woven textiles, or serru rabal in the Wolof language, are the most cared for objects in a Senegalese home. These textiles, loaded with symbolic meaning, are presented at special occasions. Even today, they are used as a shield against evil. This contemporary pattern features the hexagon _ a symbol of wisdom, life, and health present in Islamic, Christian, and Judaic history. Both the positive and negative versions of this symbol displayed in this piece reinforce the idea of unity and complementarity, much like the concept of yin-yang in Eastern thought. The weaving technique employed to create this pillow requires two people and meticulous execution. One weaver, the apprenti, assists the other. Coordination between the two allows for the creation of elaborate patterns.
