Viggo Boesen is considered by many to be a key driver in the design aesthetic of the 30s and 40s. In order to understand the design style of this period, one must know Boesen and the funkis style he popularized. Boesen’s pieces are both delightful and durable — smooth, yet, solid. The Fox lounge chair, one of Boesen’s most iconic and famous designs, has been heralded as the quintessential funkis design, winning a prestigious design competition in 1936. His unique modernist design aesthetic coupled with the hard-wearing qualities of natural rattan made him unique and imaginative like no other designer of the “golden age”.

The Oigen Foundry is located in an area that has been producing traditional Nambu ironware for 900 years. By casting in fine-grain sand the ironware has a renowned smooth and unblemished surface. If cared for properly Oigen ironware can last over 100 years and is made from 75% recycled material.

Our Morinoki knives have detailed attention given to each knife's specialty blade.
The blades of the utility knife and petit knife have been carefully designed with a gentle curve and slim form. The Hard Cheese Knife and Pizza Cutter eliminate unnecessary projections and recesses as a top priority for them is simplicity. Detailed attention was also given to two types of serrated edges for the bread knife. The two types of serrated edges are specifically designed for cutting hard and soft bread.  The end of the blade easily cuts through hard crusts while the center part smoothly slices the bread. The knife makes a very clean-cut, creating beautifully thin slices and minimal crumbs.
Morinoki knives' wooden handles also were thoughtfully designed. Special attention was given to the square wooden handle made of solid Japanese zelkova. A natural-looking handle was created with the refreshing color and soft texture of woodgrain. The square form is gently curved for easy use in the kitchen, at the table, or during a party in the garden.

Nanna Ditzel

In 1946, at the astonishingly young age of 23, Nanna Ditzel graduated from the prestigious Design School of Copenhagen with a degree in furniture design. Her prior background as a cabinet maker provided her with a basic understanding of the elemental pillars of design, from the fundamental processes of its handcraft to the use of natural materials. Ditzel took it a step further and developed her own identity and style. Her designs were both experimental and innovative, so much so that several of her designs were rediscovered decades later. A timeless example of her forward-thinking design aesthetic is the Rana chair, honored with the 2013 Interior Innovation Award in Cologne. Ditzel rebuffed traditional design concepts and managed to successfully build her own, unique style consisting of organic, soft, and feminine lines.

Hiba Wood Bath Salt is a mixture of Aomori Hiba Wood Oil and salt. It is made by pumping and distilling the mineral-rich seawater from the Tsugaru Strait in Japan.
Long praised in Japan, Aomori Hiba is a slow-growing, long-lived cypress tree whose wood has been used in the construction of temples and notable buildings throughout Japan for centuries. Hiba wood is naturally an antiseptic, water-resistant, insect-repelling, and a calming aromatic. Cul de Sac has developed a way to vapor extract the essential oil used in their products from waste lumber harvested from 250-year-old trees, thus recycling this useful and pleasing material.

Our Japanese rush trivets - that come in a range of sizes - are a traditional Japanese kitchen tool handwoven from soft natural rush stalks. We found ours in one of Tokyo's great department stores hunting for kitchen items to bring back home.
The rush trivets are perfect in the kitchen for safely placing hot pots and pans safely on tabletops and counters, and with their warm design travel well to a either a casual or dressed up tabletop.
