Hasami, Nagasaki is one of the foremost pottery districts in Japan. Porcelain was first made in the area almost 400 years ago, during the Edo Period, and was not only distributed all over Japan but also exported to Europe through the port of Nagasaki.

In her first year at Marimekko in 1953, designer Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi created Piccolo, a striped fabric painted with freehand brushstrokes. Three years later, a Piccolo print shirt called Jokapoika became the first piece of Marimekko menswear to hit the stores and the streets.
The Jokapoika 2017 shirt is a unisex shirt. It is a loose fit shirt with a straight cut to the hip hemline with little side slits and a stitched-on chest pocket. Metal buttons secure the front closure and cuffs.
Every generation thinks this shirt is modern and new. The truth is, it's been around the block. Jokapoika has the honor of being the oldest Marimekko shirt that is still being produced. Some things just can’t go out of fashion. It's a classic Finnish farmer's shirt with silver buttons that come to life with vividly striped brushstrokes. This Tasaraita (Every Stripe) print dress is made of cotton jersey and has a wide, slightly flared cut to an above-knee hemline. Details include neckline binding, three-quarter sleeves, and side slit pockets. A size medium measures 38” from the shoulder seam to the hemline.

Arne Jacobsen

As a little boy, Arne Jacobsen dreamed of being a professional painter. His career trajectory took a slight change of course when he enrolled in the Architecture School at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Fortuitous indeed, as Jacobsen is known as the “the greatest Danish architect” ever. In 1925, Jacobsen, still a student, won a silver medal for his first furniture design in the Paris Art Deco Fair. The piece was a seemingly simple rattan chair named “The Paris Chair”. The design still lives on today and is regarded as one of his most iconic pieces. Jacobsen’s style was simple but effective, essential yet distinctive. Even though he strongly despised the word “designer” and never used the word to describe himself, the world remembers him as one of the best there ever was.
