Unikko (poppy), symbolizing creativity, was born in a time when hardly any floral designs were included in Marimekko’s collections. Maija Isola, however, was fascinated by the theme of flowers and decided to create an entire range of novel floral prints.

Barbara Stauffacher Solomon is the author of Green Architecture and the Agrarian Garden (1998), Good Mourning California (1992), WHY? WHY NOT? (2013), Utopia Myopia (2013), Read Any Good Boots Lately? (2018) and Making the Invisble Visible (2018). A native of California, she is an artist, landscape architect, designer, and writer. Her work has been exhibited in New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., Paris, Zurich, Milan, and Venice and is in the permanent collection of SFMOMA.
Best known for her supergraphics, most noticeably at The Sea Ranch, CA, where she brought to the U.S. supergraphics and Helvetica typeface: an iconic a mix of her Swiss-trained graphic design layered with her California sensibility.
Barbara has taught at Harvard, Yale and the University of California at Berkeley. She is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome.

The Vigvami dress is made of cotton poplin in the Karuselli pattern, which is printed in Helsinki. The dress has an elastic gathered neckline, puffy sleeves with frill details at the seams, and elastic gathered sleeve ends. The waistline features an adjustable elastic cord with a lock. The hem is gathered at the seam and it has a slight A-line cut. The roomy Relle cosmetic bag is made of unbleached heavyweight upholstery cotton with a stain-repellent finish on the outside. The bag has a zipper closure as well as a nylon lining and four pockets on the inside. The beige colored Pienet Kivet (stones) pattern is printed in Helsinki. The Kivet (stones) design builds on circles cut with scissors. The pattern was most likely inspired by the big rough-edged stones that were manually cleared from the designer’s atelier home’s grounds.

After all this, I sat still & became obsessed with 8 ½" x 11" sheets of white paper. I typed lines. I drew lines. Letterforms lined up into words. Words lined up into straight lines. Straight lines, one above another, lined up into columns & stories. Each line & liaison led to the next & related to the rest. I cut-&-paste a lot on more sheets of 8 ½" x 11" paper and became a knotty Y-NOT-KNOT lady looking on from across the book's binding, glued, I looked for secrets in white shapes, the precious nothing of wide margins, the white space no one notices between the lines and lies, behind the scenes & in my life.
