These Kamenoko Tawashi brushes are widely used in Japan, and rightfully so. Invented in 1907 by Mr. Seizaemon Nishio with palm fibers, they’re popularity spread because of the palm fibers natural ability to massage sore muscles, exfoliate and create radiant skin.  When we discovered them in Japan, we fell in love! The natural material has stood the test of time as it continues to be a household favorite in Japan and beyond.

The attentive craftsmanship of Hender Scheme is evident in this deceptively simple piece. From the sourcing of the highest quality leather to the use of waxed cotton thread triple stitched by hand, each element of this leather bucket was given care. The seams are solid and reinforced so that the bucket can handle the rigors of everyday use. This bucket is particularly large, making it a great way to keep clutter off the floor - throws, tools, or toys can be stored attractively inside and easily transported with the aid of two handles. My favorite thing about Hender Scheme's products is the fact that the leather will gradually patina, making each piece unique to its owner.

This is the thin and minimal option out of the bunch. It is thinner than the other MATUREWARE handles but since it’s still made of solid brass, it feels heavy and appropriate for a door handle.

Chores are usually associated with negative feelings. Tools for cleaning and sweeping are quite often plain, unattractive and tucked behind a wall or hidden in a closet. These brooms designed by acclaimed designer, Masanori Oji, and based on a style from the Edo period. We think they are so beautiful that we love displaying them in our offices and home. Made from elastic broomcorn, rattan and Japanese palm, the material is durable and makes daily cleaning effortless. The unique umbrella handle makes it convenient to hang and easy to display.

I am a Hinoki Bath Bucket. Rub-a-dub-dub, a new addition for your tub!

Curator's Notes

Whenever we travel to Japan, there are customs that we need to get acquainted to. They are just so different from our day-to-day routines in New York. One such custom is the Japanese way of bathing. The traditional bathtub is made out of hinoki wood and is much deeper than what we’re used to. It’s meant for a soak instead of a quick shower. Although these tubs have been adapted to modern times with new materials and sizes, the overall concept of bathing in Japan remains the same. It’s a time to relax, unwind, and treat cleansing the body like a ritual with the proper equipment. A ‘bath bucket’ for instance is used to rinse the body after scrubbing. Usually made of hinoki wood like this bath bucket by Kiso, they are mildew resistant and can get wet for that reason. If not to use in the bath, the bucket with its glimmering copper rings would also be a beautiful caddy for storing soap and shampoo. We love the idea of making the bath experience as ceremonious as other Japanese activities like arranging flowers in the Ikebana manner, having tea or something as simple as preparing slow brewed pour-over coffee. In many ways, bathing can be executed with the same amount of mindfulness, and this bath bucket helps add to the experience.

Curator's Notes

Boxwood combs have a long history in Japan as both supernatural objects and cosmetic accessories. Today the combs are appreciated, as much for their aesthetic beauty as their functionality and Jusun-Ya has become renowned for their high-quality versions. Since 1875, the company has been using original production methods from the Nara period (8 th C.). They gather boxwood boards, fumigate the wood, then store the bundles for ten years making them thoroughly dry and warp resistant. When the wood is ready, each comb tooth is measured by eye and sawed by hand. The combs are resistant to static electricity and help promote healthy hair. We love how the teeth will smooth out and glide easier with frequent use and how the amber colour of the wood deepens with age! In contemporary times, many of the combs have a multi-purpose function. The asymmetric slender design is created to avoid top knots at the back of the head.

The Lid Vision Glass is another home run design by 10¹² Terra. As with their other products, this terrarium allows the observer to enjoy the evolution of plant life. The succulent’s roots change as the plant rests on a hand hammered disk, reflecting light off of each facet. Finding the perfectly sized succulent for your chosen size shouldn’t be tricky but is important to display the vision glasses in the best light. Something not too big that will cover the entire disk and something not too small is key.

Nambu tekki cast iron is renown for use as cookware because of its superior heat retention and versatility. Produced in Iwate, these two handled pans are suitable for an oven, gas stovetop or induction range, along with over the grill for an oven-to-table convenience. In Japan, these particular pans are often used to cook various sukiyaki dishes that require being left in the oven for long periods of time, but we use them in our home for anything from bacon and eggs to cornbread. They are available in three different sizes and stack within each other for ease of storage.

This small daisy dish looks like it is made in a precious metal but it is actually made of ceramic with a silver overglaze. Each flower is hand formed giving the petals a delicate appearance fit to hold a sweet treat or chocolate. The luster is so dynamic as it creates patina, shifting and darkening as time passes.

Forms often found in Japanese motifs inspire these chopstick rests. The three shapes in this series, designed by Oji Masanori, include Tsurugi (sword), Omodaka (leaf) and Futaba (sprout). Chopsticks lay comfortably on the notches but they are also designed to act as small dishes that can hold ginger, wasabi, spices or soy sauce in personal portions. Each set includes two Omodaka chopstick rests.

Curator's Notes

I've always enjoyed looking at antique candleholders at museums like the Met because after all, candlelight was society’s only source of light for far longer than electrical bulbs. There is an immense amount of variety and history behind candleholders as a result.
This upright candleholder bares semblance to some of the ones found in churches and temples because of it’s decorative stem. It also has a pricket, a detail usually found in very old candle holders before the church banned them when the pointy ends became used as weapons when religious riots broke out.

Chores are usually associated with negative feelings. Tools for cleaning and sweeping are quite often plain, unattractive and tucked behind a wall or hidden in a closet. These brooms designed by acclaimed designer, Masanori Oji, and based on a style from the Edo period. We think they are so beautiful that we love displaying them in our offices and home. Made from elastic broomcorn, rattan and Japanese palm, the material is durable and makes daily cleaning effortless. The unique umbrella handle makes it convenient to hang and easy to display.

For these bento boxes, the lacquerware masters, Wajima Kirimoto, chooses to utilize Japanese Cypress Thujopsis wood for it's smooth, even grain, anti-microbial properties and water resistance - highly suitable for lunch boxes. These boxes have a removable divider also made of wood and are known for their lacquer that incorporates diatomaceous earth into it's base layer and top coat making them extremely durable and water resistant.
