Curator's Notes

The original concept of "Box of Air" was created by Masanobu Ando to represent the space within a Japanese home. We worked with Ando-san to explore this concept, taking inspiration from the way Japanese architecture removes the division between indoor and outdoor areas. The "Box of Air" holds a sacred space in which you may cultivate a miniature zen garden, placing flowers, air plants, or stones within the ceramic confines of the box. Think of it as a three-dimensional frame for your most precious objects. But as with all abstract pieces, its meaning is up for your interpretation. To us, the "Box of Air" represents openness and intention. T here is a concept in Buddhism called shoshin, which translates to “beginner's mind.” To achieve shosin, one must let go of preconceptions to become once more open to true discovery. The space within the "Box of Air" is empty and thus full of potential, reminding us to keep our minds open to new possibilities. The high standard of cleanliness and the use of tissue-pack marketing have made pocket tissue packs a common sight in Japan. This small wooden box from Azmaya is designed to hold tissue packs, but its size is also ideal for other small goods. Made of hinoki wood, which is naturally mold and mildew resistant, the box stands up well against water and humidity. With its beautiful wood grain and evergreen scent, we think this hinoki box makes for an elegant container to organize toiletries and accessories in the bathroom.

Curator's Notes

For our latest in-house product, we wanted an object that can hold its own while getting consistent use in one of our daily rituals, burning incense and palo santo. The idea was to create a plate with a simple and low profile — standing only on three small feet — to let the craftsmanship shine. Hand-casted and hand-lacquered, this plate reflects its material and production process on its surface. While the urushi lacquer helps to prevent rusting and discoloration, we also worked closely with the artisans to develop a finish that combines green tea and sumi ink for a clean yet rich palate well-suited to the weight of this plate. While most of our days are dominated by screens, we like to start and end our day with a sight that's easier on our eyes. This beautiful analog alarm clock features a Japanese beechwood frame that adds a soft, warm presence next to the bed. The snooze button on top provides 5 extra minutes of slumber and sets off a gentle light for checking the time. The clock's gentle, round shape is echoed in the round serif numbers on the faceplate, making for a welcome sight to ease into the morning. The alarm sound starts off as a a gentle continuous beep that slowly ascends in loudness.

We love how lightweight these square bambooplates are while still being very durable. Since 1898, Kohchosai has been specializing in making a variety of bamboo craft products. The Minotake line, designed by the world-renowned Makoto Koizumi, utilizes the natural properties and curvature of bamboo to create a series of cutlery items and kitchen tools. I've seen many ceramic coffee drippers in my life, and still I gasped out loud when I saw this one. That may seem like a dramatic reaction, but the works of Masanobu Ando have that effect. Shapes, textures, and hues draw influence from various facets of nature for a presence that is deeply emotive. The silver glaze glows and darkens as you turn the piece, and the ridges of the inside taper down to form an opening in the shape of a very lovable little star. The fact that it's a functional tool essential for the creation of a great cup of coffee adds to this object's universal beauty.

Curator's Notes

It’s interesting to think that not much has changed with a light bulb since 1879 when Edison invented the first commercially viable model. When we discovered that Yoshiki Tsukamoto designed his own light bulbs, it was refreshing to say the least. Although these bulbs come in standard shapes and screw bases, their carbon or tungsten filaments are completely unique! Each blown glass bulb glows with slender filaments that wrap and wind into distinct sculptural patterns. Used for sconces, lamps, overhead pendants, exposed light bulb fixtures and anywhere creative accent lighting is needed.

Having a glass of white or rose at its optimal temperature is key to enjoying its full flavours. This wine cooler is made of double walled titanium, which is highly effective at maintaining a desired temperature for a long period of time without the need for ice. Although titanium is a brittle metal to work with, the artisans at SUS developed a technique to shape the metal without cracking, while also creating a beautiful hammered texture. With its simple shape and stark shine, the elegance of this cooler is a match for even the finest bottle.

Futon mattresses are a great way to save space as they roll up into a compact bundle, but are difficult to clean. This brush is designed specifically to make the job easier, with horsehair bristles that gently remove surface dust and a wooden end that can be used like a carpet beater to drive out dirt. The "Y" end of the brush provides a stable base as the piece leans against the wall, while the hole at the other end allows it to be hung on a hook. I love the bold, playful shape! Adds a bit of fun to your routine household cleaning.

It’s interesting to think that not much has changed with a light bulb since 1879 when Edison invented the first commercially viable model. When we discovered that Yoshiki Tsukamoto designed his own light bulbs, it was refreshing to say the least. Although these bulbs come in standard shapes and screw bases, their carbon or tungsten filaments are completely unique! Each blown glass bulb glows with slender filaments that wrap and wind into distinct sculptural patterns. Used for sconces, lamps, overhead pendants, exposed light bulb fixtures and anywhere creative accent lighting is needed.

Whenever we sit down for tea with Ando-san, we notice how he uses this gold tray to hold the accessories necessary for a tea ceremony as a way of highlighting the tools for the ritual. We can't help but admire how beautiful the tray is in itself. Handmade by Ando-san, this tray features a gold overglaze that will naturally patina with use over time. Its long shape sits elegantly on any surface, but it offsets particularly well on a narrow mantle or shelf.

This Square Spatula is shaped to easily scoop hard to reach areas of a jar and for spreading condiments. Since 1898, Kohchosai has been specializing in making a variety of bamboo craft products. The Minotake line, designed by the world-renowned Makoto Koizumi, utilizes the natural properties and curvature of bamboo to create a series of cutlery items and kitchen tools. Curator's Notes

After many breaks for tea throughout each work day, I begin to see my mug as more of an intimate friend than just another drinking vessel. I look for one that is unique, and this mug hand-formed by Masanobu Ando has exactly that quality. A pinched side forms a droplet when viewed from above, and the little notched ring of a handle hugs your fingers as you hold it. The idea is to drink from the spouted point while the heat of the vessel warms your hands.

Curator's Notes

Cast iron's durability, strength and ability to retain heat has always made it a mainstay in our kitchen, but I didn't fully appreciate its beauty until seeing this pan. This small, lidded cast iron pan is produced by the Suzuki Morihasa foundry that specializes in Nambu Tekki ironware. Made with a sand casting technique, the process ensures that the pan is rust-resistant, while giving it a subtly textured surface. The interior has a smooth enamel coating to suit all types of cooking. The pan's shallow depth would be the perfect size for a mini frittata or an apple crumble dessert.
