Hair care is sacred in Japan, where hair is not only a sign of health and beauty, it also carries spiritual energy. Jusan-Ya continues the tradition of Japanese hair care and made it portable with this beautiful travel comb. Using original production techniques from the Nara period, this comb is handmade from boxwood that is bound and fumigated by smoke to strengthen the wood and correct warps. Boxwood is naturally oily, which protects the comb from breakage and prevents static when brushing. The comb comes with a fabric case that you can pop in your bag, while protecting and keeping the comb clean.

Masanobu Ando's time spent studying Buddhism holds a deep influence over his work. He came up with the concept of"Box of Air" to represent a sacred space within a Japanese home, and we began to explore this concept as part of a collaborative process. The Buddhist philosophy of dualism describes a two-part reality, so naturally, we created the "Box of Air's" counterpart, "Air of Box". Since "Box of Air" is meant to depict an indoor space within the home, our collaboration piece is the opposite – a hollow ceramic box that represents the outside world. The shadowy, craggy sides of the simple cube sculpture convey a sense of mystery and solemn beauty.

Buns and topknots have a rich history in Japan, as worn by geishas, samurais and sumo wrestlers, and hair picks are frequently used to easily hold hair in place. This hair pick is simple and unadorned, allowing the beauty of its material to shine. Using traditional production techniques from the Nara period, this hair pick is made from boxwood tree that has been smoked to ensure its strength. Its tapered shape can secure even super fine hair, so you can easily twist your hair up and keep it away from your neck and face. The hole at the end is a nod to tradition, where geishas would attach a charm to personalize their style.

I am a Shinogi Sake Cup. I'll make your sake sparkle like a gem. But drinking too much of it will lead to mayhem.

Curator's Notes

Each soft groove of this sake cup was carved by hand with the aid of a diamond rotary cutter. While running your fingers over the texture, you can almost sense the motion of the blade scooping into the surface to create each facet. Afterwards, the piece is polished on the interior for a smooth shiny surface and buffed on the exterior for a contrasting matte effect. The time intensive process is felt in the texture as you bring the cup to your lips. The blueish smoke-hued glass catches light and refracts like a precious gem. A matching pitcher is available here.

Porcelain Pendant - Fine Line Cone

I am a Petty Knife. Don’t get me confused for something I’m not. I would never boast about my slick handle or sharp blade – That’s something only a petty man would do.

Curator's Notes

Though it’s quite similar in size to a paring knife, this petty knife was designed for delicate tasks on a cutting board - for instance, slicing garlic, slivering herbs, or deboning smaller cuts of fish. I find it easy to use the knife to pare fruits and vegetables as well! The knife is part of Koizumi -san’s Ambai line of knives, which features high-performance cutting blades crafted by a renowned stainless steel manufacturer in the Gifu prefecture of Japan.

Hair care is sacred in Japan, where hair is not only a sign of health and beauty, it also carries spiritual energy. Jusan-Ya continues the tradition of Japanese hair care and made it portable with this beautiful travel comb. Using original production techniques from the Nara period, this comb is handmade from boxwood that is bound and fumigated by smoke to strengthen the wood and correct warps. Boxwood is naturally oily, which protects the comb from breakage and prevents static when brushing. The comb comes with a fabric case that you can pop in your bag, while protecting and keeping the comb clean.

I am a Sake Warmer. For a toast as warm as toast!

Curator's Notes

When sake is served warm, it holds an entirely different flavor profile. Deeper notes unfold as the heat enhances the aroma and adds coziness in the colder months. This piece by Simplicity is based off the Japanese "chirori", a metal vessel used for the purpose of warming sake. After placing the copper pitcher filled with sake in its compartment, s imply set a candle in the rear opening to heat up the sake with the warmth of the flame. Filling the vessel with water will help the sake heat up evenly and keep it warm even after the candle goes out. The rattan-wrapped handle of the sake warmer detaches for compact storage and the copper sake carafe is lined in tin for greater functionality.

Sake Warmer

I am a 'Men-Choko' Carved Glass. I'm a bit of an old fashioned glass myself, but I don't mind when people use me to dip soba noodles.

Curator's Notes

This glass has a rocky texture when you hold it created from carving into the glass after coating it with deep black enamel. The black comes through with hazy edges almost like a deep burgundy color. This technique showcases the complicated glassblowing techniques mastered by founder Kazumi Tsuji exceptionally. Founder Kazumi Tsuji of factory zoomer crafted these cups to be multi-purpose, for old-fashioneds, cocktails, dessert or its traditional use for noodles. 'Men' means 'noodle' in Japanese as this cup size is standard size for dipping cold soba noodles in sauce.

Curator's Notes

These candles are beautiful when they’re burned and even when they aren’t. The unique colour lies in the pale wax 100% obtained from sumac trees, also known as ‘haze trees’. Haze trees have been bred in Western Japan specifically for candle making as they burn consistently without excess wax dripping. They also have noticeably large flames due to the washi paper wicks, which is mesmerizing especially when used for meditation. I especially can't get over how amazing it is that each individual candle is hand formed one layer at a time.

The void is one of the main five elements in Japanese Buddhism, representing spirit, thought and creative energy. It serves as a crucial inspiration in Ando-san's ceramics, which is exemplified in Box of Air. This beautiful, hand-shaped ceramic piece features open walls that plays with the distinction of indoor/outdoor space. Glazed in pewter, the box will develop a natural patina and age gracefully over time. Its dark tone and organic shape make for a nice contrast on a shelf or in a still life scene.
