I’ve never seen a tea case quite as well crafted as this piece by master wood artisan, Norio Tanno. Whenever I’m in Hokkaido, I make it a point to meet with him, just to get a dose of inspiration for our own wood designs. Seeing him pass down his skills to his son Masakage Tanno, makes me want to do an apprenticeship with him! This Tea Case is one of his masterpieces in my opinion. It is full of beautiful surprises and a delight to handle. Incredibly intricate, the case has multiple components that are all handcrafted in solid wood with wood joinery techniques. An exterior case houses an interior canister that perfectly slides together. A foldable tea scoop sits securely on top of a small knob on the lid of the interior canister. All the pieces have their place.

These radiant bowls are crafted of pure tin by skilled craftsmen in Takaoka City, an area renowned in Japan for its production of high-quality cast metal objects. Tin is an ideal material for tableware due to its natural antimicrobial properties and resistance to tarnishing. It also is great for keeping dishes chilled—just place the bowl in the fridge or freezer for a few moments before serving. But in addition to its functionality, the bowl has such a lovable, charming form, with gentle irregularities and a rustic simplicity. I love how the differing three sizes work together as a set.

Curator's Notes

For our latest in-house product, we wanted an object that can hold its own while getting consistent use in one of our daily rituals, burning incense and palo santo. The idea was to create a plate with a simple and low profile — standing only on three small feet — to let the craftsmanship shine. Hand-casted and hand-lacquered, this plate reflects its material and production process on its surface. While the urushi lacquer helps to prevent rusting and discoloration, we also worked closely with the artisans to develop a finish that combines green tea and sumi ink for a clean yet rich palate well-suited to the weight of this plate. Perfect as a dessert spoon or as baby’s first spoon! This wooden spoon is handcrafted from trees of the Hokkaido region in Japan. The gentle curves of the handle combined with a smooth finish make this a great spoon for daily use.  Designer Hiroyuki Inoue specializes in the research and production of objects for children and this is clearly a stand out piece from his wide-ranging collection.

Large Glass Carved Bowl

I am a 3pc Pack of Sumac Candles. My washi paper core shines brighter than most, until I burn myself out.

Curator's Notes

These candles are beautiful when they’re burned and even when they aren’t. The unique colour lies in the pale wax 100% obtained from sumac trees, also known as ‘haze trees’. Haze trees have been bred in Western Japan specifically for candle making as they burn consistently without excess wax dripping. They also have noticeably large flames due to the washi paper wicks, which is mesmerizing especially when used for meditation. I especially can't get over how amazing it is that each individual candle is hand formed one layer at a time.

While the surface of a tray tends to get lost under the items it holds, this unique tray demands that its surface gets noticed. Sugahara is already well known for its innovative glassware, but this set of sake pitcher and sake cup takes it to the next level. As with all Sugahara designs, these glass pieces are individually blown and hand-finished. However, the matte finishing gives the pieces the illusion of ceramic, and the opacity helps protect sake from the effects of sunlight. The simple shapes add to the stark, and seemingly contradictory, beauty of this set, which is sure to be a conversation starter over drinks with friends and guests.

Light, natural wooden plates add a natural element to your meals. Meals look fresher and more appetizing when served on wood. The plates are durable enough for everyday use, but elegant enough to be served for special occasions. "Cara" is a series of egg-shaped tablewares making the most of the warmth of wood as a material and Japanese thin-wood-curving techniques. The curvatures of the pieces are meant to mimic the egg so as to fit gently within your hands.

Very new Cara products may have some trace remainder of the polyurethane coating odor. Before using the cup for the first time, leave tea leaves or coffee grounds inside the cup for several hours to remove any coating odor.
Avoid using microwave and dish washing machine as coating may get cracked
Also don't soak it in the water for a long period of time
Use a thinner dish detergent with a sponge to wash, rinse with warm water, then wipe with soft cloth and let it dry well

These candles are beautiful when they’re burned and even when they aren’t. The unique colour lies in the pale wax 100% obtained from sumac trees, also known as ‘haze trees’. Haze trees have been bred in Western Japan specifically for candle making as they burn consistently without excess wax dripping. They also have noticeably large flames due to the washi paper wicks, which is mesmerizing especially when used for meditation. I especially can't get over how amazing it is that each individual candle is hand formed one layer at a time.

This hand built vase by Masanobu Ando is organic in form like a teardrop or a raindrop. Much like a one-of-a-kind art piece the irregular opening acts as a marker indicating that the piece was sculpted and formed by hand. The perfect size for a small bouquet of flowers. For a flower arranger, the best aspect of the vase would be the bottom heavy base, making it easy to create visually balanced arrangements.

The low feet of this ceramic tray elevate the surface just a bit for a floating effect. Rather than a stark solid shape, its black glaze is warm and textured, and its imperfect edges have the charm of a handcrafted item. This tray would make for beautiful presentation of wagashi sweets. It can also be used to serve tea, keeping the hot cups off the surface of the table. I also love how its minimal form works for showcasing a special object, like a family heirloom with sentimental value.
