Curator's Notes

Sugahara is already well known for its innovative glassware, but this set of sake pitcher and sake cup takes it to the next level. As with all Sugahara designs, these glass pieces are individually blown and hand-finished. However, the matte finishing gives the pieces the illusion of ceramic, and the opacity helps protect sake from the effects of sunlight. The simple shapes add to the stark, and seemingly contradictory, beauty of this set, which is sure to be a conversation starter over drinks with friends and guests.

This striking piece is an exclusive collaboration between Nalata Nalata and metal artisan Mitsuhiro Konishi. We’ve been long-time admirers of Konishi-san’s craftsmanship and artistry, and it was an honor to work with him to create a spatula that feels more like a rare tool from another world than an everyday kitchen utensil. The golden handle of brass gently tapers to an angle, where it meets with richly textured, hand-hammered steel. The head of the spatula has a series of perforations in striking formation, a modern detail that contrasts nicely with the rustic patina of the steel. But aesthetics aside, the spatula is incredibly well-made. Both functional and beautiful, it’s a tool to be used and admired in equal parts. I am a Small Koshimasu Oil Pot Server. Cooking with oil often leads to mess, but keeping it clean and contained is what I do best.

Curator's Notes

Conte's Koshimasu oil pot server has become a household staple we didn't know we would reach for so frequently. Consisting of a stainless steel container, filter and lid, the pot has a tall and slim shape that takes up minimal space on the counter. The container's curved lip stops drips, and the lid can be lifted with one hand to keep the other hand free and clean during use. While the pot is made to strain cooking oil for reuse, we like using it to mix and infuse dressings directly in the container. Large size can be found here.

Masanobu Ando's deep appreciation for the concepts of Zen culture takes physical form as he sculpts his own versions of traditional tools that aid in meditative practice. Similar to Japanese tea ceremony and flower arrangement, the art of Japanese calligraphy encourages harmonious thought and feelings of peace. The skill emphasizes fluidity and spontaneity, echoed in the irregular slopes of Ando-san's brush stand. Brushes wet with sumi ink are meant to rest in the valleys between each ceramic peak. It's a convenient spot to place your writing utensil, and adds visual interest to your desktop as a sculptural paperweight. You could also use the stand as a unique chopsticks rest!

It was a joy working with Makoto Koizumi to reimagine office tools with a sense of beauty along with function. Larger rulers can be clunky and unwieldy for smaller tasks, and are often sentenced to a life hidden in a drawer. This petite ruler makes a friendly sidekick for quick measurements, and looks sweetly unobtrusive in view on your desktop. Lightweight and short, it is also a handy straightedge to carry along in your pen case. Numbers have been foregone for tidy, minimal lines and dots.

Curator's Notes

Michiaki Mochizuki ( 望月 通陽) is one of our favorite artists reimagining Japanese traditional arts and craft, so we are honored to feature a series of his original artwork made specifically for Nalata Nalata. Each unique piece in this series is centered around Mochizuki's idiosyncratic understanding of love, which we feel is pertinent in such times of loneliness and uncertainty. The rich tones of this artwork is made using traditional tsutsugaki resist-dye technique, allowing ink to penetrate the fibers of its material base while playing with negative and positive space. This piece comes in a white oak frame designed by Mochizuki's wife and assembled by their friends, ensuring that love is carried through each process of the artwork before it enters your home.

For all those years I brought a lunch bag to school, I never would've thought it could look so cool. Siwa combines innovative material with traditional techniques to create bags that age beautifully over time. These bags are made of recycled fibers using the washi-suki paper manufacturing method, resulting in a durable and water-resistant material. Continued use of the bag creates creases that develop a leather-like look and feel over time. The small size is ideal for lunches, the wide shape is a good size for a laptop and work documents, and the large bag has a generous capacity for bringing home groceries.

Curator's Notes

Boxwood combs have a long history in Japan as both supernatural objects and cosmetic accessories. Today the combs are appreciated, as much for their aesthetic beauty as their functionality and Jusun-Ya has become renowned for their high-quality versions. Since 1875, the company has been using original production methods from the Nara period (8 th C.). They gather boxwood boards, fumigate the wood, then store the bundles for ten years making them thoroughly dry and warp resistant. When the wood is ready, each comb tooth is measured by eye and sawed by hand. The combs are resistant to static electricity and help promote healthy hair. We love how the teeth will smooth out and glide easier with frequent use and how the amber colour of the wood deepens with age! In contemporary times, many of the combs have a multi-purpose function. The Tail Boxwood Comb is used for permed hair, the tail for dividing and rolling potions of the hair.

I’m beginning to take the less is more path with my wardrobe. With that comes a bit more maintenance but it's a sustainable approach that forces you to be conscious about how you wash and care for clothes in order to prolong a garment’s lifespan. I like how this all-natural ingredient line of detergent is specially formulated for a variety of textiles, providing the proper care a cherished garment deserves.

The Stain Remover containing agents from soya bean and sunflower, works effectively on all fabrics, even delicate fabrics such as silk and wool. Delicate garments should be washed by hand and sturdier fabrics can be machine washed using the Stain Remover.

The artistry behind this spoon is very much like a good cup of coffee — its all in the process. This spoon is forged from a single piece of iron that is then finished with an urushi lacquer mixed with red bengara pigment. The pigment oxidizes when the piece is fired, turning into a deep navy colour with beautiful blue specks. The long handle easily reaches into jars of any depth, for a morning ritual that runs as smoothly as the coffee tastes.

Curator's Notes

Referring to the Seikatsu Kogei movement, of which he is a prominent member of, Ando-san said that, "we keep blank spaces within sculptures and vessels to inspire the user’s way of interaction with the piece." The openness of his ceramic practice is no more evident than in Box of Air, a beautiful piece that plays with our notions of what constitutes the separation of indoor/outdoor space. Handcrafted and coated with a matte white glaze, this unique piece can be enjoyed as a sculpture or holding a few sprigs of flowers inside.
