I always prefer having a drink in a glass, and this travel glass is a beautiful one to enjoy in the great outdoors. The cup comes in its own linen carrying bag and black leather coaster to protect against breakage and scratching, making it easy to carry while out and about. Although please carry with care as it is still glass after-all! The vessel features moderately thick walls and elegant, vertical ridges that provide durability and a nice grip. Bring the glass out for wine on a picnic or to enjoy a much deserved beer after a hike.

As the companion to their 2006 exhibition at Axis Gallery in Tokyo, Naoto Fukusawa and Jasper Morrison's book investigates the design of discrete, everyday objects to make sense of how they stand the test of time. By examining 204 objects, ranging from a shopping basket to designs by Noguchi and Rams, this book examines the dual quality of timelessness and timeliness that makes these items seem already ubiquitous when they arrived. Super Normal provides so much insight into the things that I use everyday, making it a comforting and enjoyable read to make sense of my relationship to them.

Curator's Notes

We use clipboards every day at the shop, so we are especially thrilled to present our own version designed in collaboration with Makoto Koizumi! The designer originally created a small clipboard for grocery lists and expanded the series to Japanese standard paper dimensions but they never quite fit the US standard letter size we use on a daily basis and the clip never held enough papers! We tweaked the design over the course of a few iterations to nail the perfect dimension and are happy to say that we’ve never seen a commonplace office tool filled with such simple beauty. The bar of cherry wood acts as a clip, securely holding papers in place through the invisible force of magnets in a seamless one-touch mechanism. We particularly love how the fastener is removable for both orientations. Magnets are hidden along both the longer and shorter edge of the wood back, so the clipboard can function in portrait and landscape mode. The magnets are strong enough to hold the clipboard on your fridge to hold notes, photos or grocery lists in place. The piece embodies Koizumi-san's ability to see beyond the established structure of an everyday object to transform it in ways that are sensitive to the human experience, and bring true joy with its use.

Michiaki Mochizuki ( 望月 通陽) is one of our favorite artists reimagining Japanese traditional arts and craft, so we are honored to feature a series of his original artwork made specifically for Nalata Nalata. Each unique piece in this series is centered around Mochizuki's idiosyncratic understanding of love, which we feel is pertinent in such times of loneliness and uncertainty. The rich tones of this artwork is made using traditional tsutsugaki resist-dye technique, allowing ink to penetrate the fibers of its material base while playing with negative and positive space. This piece comes in a white oak frame designed by Mochizuki's wife and assembled by their friends, ensuring that love is carried through each process of the artwork before it enters your home.

Every year Masanobu Ando sends us a very special chawan glazed with gold, and this third iteration is a delight to behold. As with all of Ando-san's pieces, this tea bowl is built up by hand to highlight the natural textures of clay. For this piece, Ando-san created a round base to comfortably fit the contours of cupped hands, and the gold glaze features distinctive markings from firing that trace its natural texture and emphasize its sculpted qualities. Arriving in a "tomobako" wood box, the dedication to craft and material evident in this bowl is worth more than its weight in gold.

Siwa Black Clutch Bag - Wide

I am Shoyu Okaki Rice Crackers. I’m soy sauce flavoured mochi slices that have been toasted over charcoal fire until I crack. I’m going to be your new favourite tea snack!

Curator's Notes

We tried these crackers for the first time in Kyoto with tea and got hooked! We knew immediately we needed to carry them – not just to share with clients, but also to have an endless supply for ourselves! They are hand made by one man, who produces them in a traditional way, before food companies started to use big factory machines. He first makes the mochi rice cakes in a stone mortar with a wood pestle. Then he cuts the mochi into thin slices and lets them dry in the sun and air. Afterwards they are roasted by hand, ten slices at a time.

This pack is lightly flavoured with homemade soy sauce (shoyu). It has a hint of sweetness from the rice and is well suited alongside tea.

For all those years I brought a lunch bag to school, I never would've thought it could look so cool. Siwa combines innovative material with traditional techniques to create bags that age beautifully over time. These bags are made of recycled fibers using the washi-suki paper manufacturing method, resulting in a durable and water-resistant material. Continued use of the bag creates creases that develop a leather-like look and feel over time. The small size is ideal for lunches, the wide shape is a good size for a laptop and work documents, and the large bag has a generous capacity for bringing home groceries.

Meals can taste significantly better when served on the right dinnerware. Often, white surfaces can be the perfect backdrop to highlight a delicious meal. We love the Jicon porcelain dinnerware pieces for this exact reason. Beautifully crafted, distinct yet subtle, but most importantly, never distracting. We're also crazy about the antique rim.

Simplicity designer Shinichiro Ogata opened Higashiya, a chain of tea and dessert shops, to bring back the fading neighborhood wagashi confectionary stores. This book offers a glimpse into the evolution of Higashiya as it strives to adapt the culture and tradition of wagashi for our modern times. Printed in both Japanese and English, this book features beautiful photographs depicting the sweets, how they are plated and how they reflect the changes of the seasons and variations in nature.

Inspired by the contemplation bench typically found in Japanese gardens, this beautiful bench from Azmaya exemplifies the elegance and strength of Japanese joinery. Its simple design and proportions create a durable shape that requires no hardware, making it strong yet lightweight. The bench is made from tono hinoki wood, which is naturally antimicrobial and resistant to water. While this bench is perfectly suited for use in the bath, it easily fits wherever you need a seat at home.

Michiaki Mochizuki ( 望月 通陽) is one of our favorite artists reimagining Japanese traditional arts and craft, so we are honored to feature a series of his original artwork made specifically for Nalata Nalata. Each unique piece in this series is centered around Mochizuki's idiosyncratic understanding of love, which we feel is pertinent in such times of loneliness and uncertainty. The rich tones of this artwork is made using traditional tsutsugaki resist-dye technique, allowing ink to penetrate the fibers of its material base while playing with negative and positive space. This piece comes in a white oak frame designed by Mochizuki's wife and assembled by their friends, ensuring that love is carried through each process of the artwork before it enters your home.

Neo-Prehistory - 100 Verbs was an expansive exhibition curated by Andrea Branzi and Kenya Hara for the Triennale di Milano in 2016. With the premise of connecting 100 verbs to 100 corresponding objects, the exhibition traces the role of design in human history. This exhibition catalogue offers a closer look at the objects chosen — from stone tools to fake eyelashes — and the words associated to them, drawing out the human needs and desires underlying them. Written in English, Italian and Japanese and photographed by Yoshiko Ueda, this book provides nuanced insight into the history of human invention as we write its future.
