Polished, clean and minimal are all words that come to mind when we describe this set of stainless steel flatware designed by Graf Studio. Although these baskets appear delicate with their intricate woven pattern, they are made out of strips of bamboo and for this reason are quite strong. The lacelike pattern casts the most beautiful shadows and provides an airy surface for vegetables or fruit to rest on. As a company, Kohchosai Kosuga has a long history in manufacturing bamboo products by hand and the Mutsume baskets are a prime example of their expertise.

I am a Floral patterned Tenugui Cloth. I’ve got flowers and super textile powers.

Curator's Notes

Tenugui cloths are one of Japan’s old traditions but when we first received one as a gift, we had a lot of questions about this seemingly plain cotton cloth... Why are the ends frayed? What is it used for? Why the rectangular shape? A friend explained that tenuguis are a multipurpose cloth used for decorating, wrapping gifts, carrying items, wiping and drying hands. They can also be used as handkerchiefs, napkins, bandanas or kitchen cloths. The edges are frayed to allow quicker drying and are antiseptic as bacteria will not be as prone to build up as it would if the cloth had seams.
Once we discovered their versatility, we began to appreciate the meaning behind such a simple household object. We now have a large collection of tenuguis on rotation in our home and often give them as souvenirs when we return from Japan. Tenuguis by Kamawanu are handcrafted using traditional techniques. The labour-intensive process can be seen in this video.

Originally a vintage collector and seller, Yonagadou had a special connection to Taisho era patterns that later translated into prints for a variety of the company’s paper products. The Daruma doll, a prominent good-luck symbol in Japan, is abstracted and used as an all-over print on the roll of toilet paper. The flat edge of this wooden Ice Cream Spoon is perfect for dunking into soft desserts like gelato or soft serve. The hand-carved handle is strong and has a great texture when you hold it between your fingers. Each facet catches light beautifully, similar to a cut stone. Like all of Ryuji Mitani’s wooden utensils, these spoons are humble and understated, but still have a strong physical presence to them from the moment you pick them up.

Over the summer we got married. Our friend, Anna, gave us the best pre-wedding day gift from the historic Russ & Daughters grocers. It was one of their signature mini coolers containing caviar and all the complementing sides needed for the two of us to enjoy before the chaos of the big day. It was a thoughtful gift that we have to admit, started us off on a very bad and expensive caviar addiction. It also got us thinking about all the proper caviar accessories we were missing from our cabinets. It didn’t make sense to eat such a delicacy with the existing bowls and metal spoons we had. Caviar should be eaten with utensils of inert materials, such as shells, that are not chemically reactive so they don’t taint the flavour.
We knew what we needed but everything we were encountering in the market didn’t suit our taste. This prompted us to think that what we were really looking for were utensils that felt precious and one of a kind. Something artisanal that was made by hand. We knew the perfect person who could help us – our friend Pat Kim, and that’s how this collaboration started. Pat's studio based in Brooklyn, Pat Kim Design, has been mastering mother of pearl as a material for quite some time so when we approached him with the idea, it was a natural fit. He was immediately up for exploring the concept. The result is a collection of caviar serving utensils for functional presentation that utilizes the natural shape of abalone shell while retaining the pureness in flavour of caviar.

Made from Hinoki Cypress, one of the “Five Sacred Trees of Kiso,” the wood is light and fragrant, and prized for its durability and water-repellent qualities. I love that the interior has a divider for keeping the contents organized. It looks wonderful as a cutlery box on your kitchen table, but also works for stationary and other tools.

Masakage Tanno calls this piece a pill case but in reality you cant really put pills in it, at least not the size of pharmaceutical pills in North America. It took me so long to figure out a useful purpose for it until I realized its great for carrying mints around, like Altoids. Although, a few of our clients tell me they carry their herbal pills in it, so I guess Masakage is right in calling it a pill case! Regardless, I like it more for it’s incredible craftsmanship than anything, anyways.

These trays are made of natural vegetan cow leather. The raw leather material creates such a beautiful supple effect, which is something we’ve never seen in a leather tray before. The trays hold hard metal items like jewelry nicely because they provide a contrast in texture and warmth. Please note that raw vegetan leather has natural variations in colour and surface texture. Sometimes discoloration, and scarring may occur as well as variations in the roughness or smoothness of the hide itself.

Similar to a human, a bowl has a lip, a body, and a foot. This rice bowl features these three elements in perfect balance. The small "kodai", or foot, fits snugly in the palm of the hand and the body holds an ideal portion of rice. The lip is thin and elegant, but not too thin that it's brittle and prone to chipping. In fact, unglazed earthenware is known for being highly durable and tough. I love the grippy texture of the bowl's sides, and the earthy aesthetic of its unrefined material.

Made from traditional washi paper these “Michiyuki-Tou” lanterns, designed by Rina Ono, shine a beautiful filtered light. Their low energy LED lights are powered by two AA batteries, making them convenient to power without cumbersome cords. They can function as night lamps, patio lights or to bring along during midnight strolls. They’re also a great way to create a suffused ambience at dinner as an alternative to candle light.

In the art of Japanese flower arrangement, vases are specifically chosen to enhance the flowers in which they hold. We love how these vases are miniature interpretations of 6 classical Japanese vessels, allowing many to appreciate seasonal flowers with less commitment! Collect all six and the arrangements are endless! These vases are not waterproof and therefore should not be filled with water. They are designed in a way to appreciate the fleeting beauty of a single sprig or small berry-bearing twig. All six shapes available here.

Popular in Japan, these blankets are also referred to as towelkets. They resemble large beach towels or bed linens and are usually used in warmer weather. These particular towelkets are great if you want a bit of coverage yet want to stay cool as the linen weaves allow circulation of air. They are multifunctional and great for travelers with limited space. When used as a towel, the thickness of the chambray linen makes it very absorbent. They can also be used at the park as a picnic blanket, at the beach and as a lightweight blanket or throw. We love its versatility and how soft they get after washing.

Rina Ono creates another brilliant design made of paper. Place over a simple glass or plastic bottle to instantly transform it into a beautiful vase. This washi paper vase is made in the Gifu region of Japan known for its durable handmade washi paper made of mulberry bark. The beauty is in how the paper expands into forms that organically find their resting point in asymmetrical positions.
