We love the comforting feeling of eating with wooden cutlery, especially a beautiful version like this one by Akarino-Tane. This wooden fork is handcrafted from trees of the Hokkaido region in Japan. When sharing meals the proper dining etiquette calls for communal serving utensils like serving ladles and tongs but every now and then you need something for food that is in small bite-size pieces and requires the intricacy of chopsticks. These chopsticks are longer and more ornate than personal ones, making it easy to have good manners while sharing dishes.

Although these baskets appear delicate with their intricate woven pattern, they are made out of strips of bamboo and for this reason are quite strong. The lacelike pattern casts the most beautiful shadows and provides an airy surface for vegetables or fruit to rest on. As a company, Kohchosai Kosuga has a long history in manufacturing bamboo products by hand and the Mutsume baskets are a prime example of their expertise.

If you whittled a chair down to just its essence, I believe you’d arrive at something not far from Makoto Koizumi’s design for the R+R Chair. The simplicity of the structure presents as a series of straight lines, but as you draw nearer, you marvel over all of the details that keep the chair from feeling cold in its starkness. A series of gentle curves soften the edges, the natural grain of the wood provides a delicate pattern, and the leather seat adds classic warmth. Its slim profile creates a sense of space that’s perfect for apartments or smaller spaces. Crafted by highly skilled specialists in the art of furniture-making, the chair’s joinery is seamless and its body is solid. I love how the chair looks at once modern and traditional, refined, yet charming. Hard to believe that this was Koizumi-san's very first design for Miyazaki Chair Factory!

Momoko Otani achieves the perfect balance of decoration and simplicity with her all white sgraffito serving dishes. At once peaking interest with intricate lotus etchings while remaining quiet with a white on white palette. The pieces remain elegant backgrounds for serving elaborate dishes, dessert or a colourful selection of fruit.

Sgraffito is derived from the Italian word “scratch”. It is a technique of applying layers of slip onto a ceramic form and, while semi-dry, removing and etching certain areas to create a contrasting surface design. Momoko’s works are inspired by her love of lotuses and banana leaves. Her white sgraffito series display lotus buds and petals in bloom. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, featuring unique variations. They simply brighten up your day. Ceramics that will be cherished for a lifetime, knowing so many loving hours were put into the making of them!

This mixed metal serving spoon is entirely handmade by Mitsuhiro Konishi in his Okinawa based workshop. We love seeing the irregularities in the hand hammered aged steel heads in contrast to the smooth brass handles. A substantial weight is balanced with an intricate attention to detail with small rivets and subtly curved handles. I am a set of Komenomegumi Candles. Sacrificing one of our own can shine light on an entire room, so we’ve learned how to take one for the team. We were born as beacons of light, to live and die for the greater good.

Curator's Notes

These washi paper core candles are made with rice bran wax, which is derived from the rice bran that is widely cultivated in Japan and often used for eco-friendly face oils and cleansing products. Popular because of their large flames and minimal smoke, they have been hand-made in Japan with traditional techniques since the 16 th century. Each candle burns for about 30 minutes. We love the idea of a wall garden, but it's often unfeasible in small spaces that don't have the right light. I am a Wooden Honey Spoon. But not just anyone can call me honey!

Curator's Notes

This spoon is a wonderful example of Ryuji Mitani’s mastery of cherry wood. The contrasting textures of the spoon reveal it’s hand carved nature. However, it’s the intersection of the spoon’s flat handle and faceted scoop that reveals the rigorous attention to detail in the artisan's cutlery. Each textural plane is purposeful. This spoon demonstrates both the precise edge carving of his wooden knives, and hand formed quality of his pasta forks, both on the same item. When seen as a whole collection, this spoon really brings out the best qualities in all the other pieces. It's long handle makes it easy to reach the bottom of a jar of honey without getting your hands sticky.

We’ve collaborated with renowned Kyoto based futon specialists, Takaokaya, for a special edition series of “Ojami” pillows with denim taking center stage. Based on the four-panel shape of traditional Japanese bean bags, the “Ojami” can be used as a floor cushion or throw pillow. A cheerful and charming accent for any room in the home! Since 1919, Takaokaya has been devoted to producing the finest futons and zabutons in the Japanese market. The company is rooted in the tradition of Kyoto based textile crafts and we believe that by blending an American heritage material like denim, with Japanese craftsmanship, we can create a harmonious blend of the two cultures that is also a representation of this unique collaboration.

Curator's Notes

The low feet of this ceramic tray elevate the surface just a bit for a floating effect. Rather than a stark solid shape, its black glaze is warm and textured, and its imperfect edges have the charm of a handcrafted item. This tray would make for beautiful presentation of wagashi sweets. It can also be used to serve tea, keeping the hot cups off the surface of the table. I also love how its minimal form works for showcasing a special object, like a family heirloom with sentimental value.

Something so simple, almost unnoticeable, this little brass ball plays a big role when all you need is something to prop up a stick of incense. It needs a tray underneath to catch the ash so the ball itself never really is the center of attention – it’s more about the tray you choose to accompany it. The 'Oxidized Copper Trays' found here are an elegant option with its circular shape to mimic the spherical brass ball. The long and short 'Chikuseiko Incense' both fit in the ball as it has two openings with different diameters.

This pendant shade, part of designer Rina Ono’s lighting collection for Hayashi Kougei, is made from traditional Japanese washi paper. There are so many things to love about it! It’s incredibly well crafted – from the same area as most of our washi paper products in the Gifu prefecture – and it emits a very diffused light through the paper, giving everything around a soft glow. I was also drawn to the collection because of the exquisite forms the pendants are available in.

Curator's Notes

Momentum Orii has spent years developing a variety of treatments used to produce different textures and colors on copperwares. Most noteworthy amongst their vast series of products is the ‘Tone’ collection designed by Yukitoshi Toda. The trays in this collection are all solid copper but have different finishes. It’s a matter of personal preference which finish you gravitate towards. Each one is special in their own way, which is precisely why they are so fascinating. The undersides are untreated to really show off the copper core of each dish.

With our new series of 100% wool blankets, we sought out to add cozy appeal to an everyday item so closely tied with comfort and rest. Alluding to the hours of the day, our “Sunrise to Sunset” range of colours was carefully selected to suit any mood of the day. Each all-natural blanket was finished with a classic blanket stitch fit for a lifelong home staple.

Made from traditional washi paper these “Michiyuki-Tou” lanterns, designed by Rina Ono, shine a beautiful filtered light. Their low energy LED lights are powered by two AA batteries, making them convenient to power without cumbersome cords. They can function as night lamps, patio lights or to bring along during midnight strolls. They’re also a great way to create a suffused ambience at dinner as an alternative to candle light.

I am a natural linen blanket. My job is like a vacation. Whether I’m lounging at the beach or having picnics at the park, every day is a field day!

Curator's Notes

Popular in Japan, these blankets are also referred to as towelkets. They resemble large beach towels or bed linens and are usually used in warmer weather. These particular towelkets are great if you want a bit of coverage yet want to stay cool as the linen weaves allow circulation of air. They are multifunctional and great for travelers with limited space. When used as a towel, the thickness of the chambray linen makes it very absorbent. They can also be used at the park as a picnic blanket, at the beach and as a lightweight blanket or throw. We love its versatility and how soft they get after washing.

Curator's Notes

This Oval Tray is a beautiful example of the unique forms Ando-san can achieve through the Japanese tatara technique of hand forming slabs of clay. Unlike hand thrown stoneware which usually is restricted to round forms, this Oval Tray take on an uncommon, elongated shape. The uneven rim at the tray's edges reveals the hand forming process that allows Ando-san to work beyond the limits of circular items, while also making each piece different and unique.

Silver Oval Tray

I am an Ihada Soup Spoon. I-had-a soup spoon. It was the best.

Curator's Notes

The latest addition to the Ihada cutlery collection is this soup spoon, designed by Oji Masanori for the renown Futagami foundry. Like the rest of the Ihada collection, the handle has a textured, faceted shape that is comfortable to hold and reminiscent of holding chopsticks. It has a nice weight, shorter length and angle but the best aspect is the charming and perfectly oval-shaped bowl.

Takashi Tomii hand carved a collection of small dishes based on five different flower motifs. Traditionally each flower is used to identify an individual or family similar to a family crest or coat of arms. Small grooves from Takashi's hand carving tools are tangible and make each dish a pleasure to hold in your palm!

I am a Walnut Umbrella Stand. Some things can’t stand being wet. I’m not one of those things.
Curator's Notes

It’s proven hard for us to find an umbrella stand that isn’t ‘loud’. Most umbrella stands out there are overly decorative or made out of plastic. We live in a home with a lot of wood so it’s really nice to be able to find the right wood to match whatever your décor is and luckily these stands come in a variety of wood types. A lot of umbrella stands are actually unnecessarily big too! I don’t understand why umbrella stands need to hold more than a few umbrellas unless it’s for a giant office building. This one fits maybe 4 umbrellas comfortably – 6 if you really want to pack them in there. It looks the best with 2, to be honest!

This bottle opener fits comfortably in the palm of your hands and feels especially smooth to the touch. At first glance, it's function is a mystery though a pleasant surprise when you flip it over to reveal the bottle cap removing mechanism underneath.
“Kime” means texture or wood grain in Japanese and each Kime product features the unique qualities of the wood it is made from. The sleek shapes and smooth texture highlight the outstanding skill of the craftsmen who make each piece in Asahikawa, Japan.
