This adorable sugar pot from Nousaku's Mimi collection brings back fond memories of ending family gatherings with coffee and after-dinner conversations. This container is handcrafted from pure tin that was cast using traditional techniques developed in Takaoka City. In addition to being rust resistant, tin is naturally antibacterial and less allergenic, making it a highly safe material for storing sugar. Featuring two simple handles and a small spoon, this charming pot is a light and lustrous piece to pass around with tea and coffee at the dinner table.

Curator's Notes

Norio Tanno's way of crafting intricate wood objects continues to amaze me. For many years Tanno-san told us that he would be retiring from woodworking and handing down the ranks to his son, Masakage Tanno, but we're relieved to see that he is back at it! What amazes me the most about these business card cases are that they are carved out of a single piece of wood with no other materials except for one spring that securely closes the box with a satisfying click. A barely visible diagonal cut line indicates the lid of the case while never interrupting the continuous wood grain. Each one has a natural warm wood presence enhanced by smooth rounded edges that conform to the hand.

These Kamenoko Tawashi brushes are widely used in Japan, and rightfully so. Invented in 1907 by Mr. Seizaemon Nishio with palm fibers, they’re popularity spread because of the palm fibers natural ability to massage sore muscles, exfoliate and create radiant skin.  When we discovered them in Japan, we fell in love! The natural material has stood the test of time as it continues to be a household favorite in Japan and beyond.

I’ve never seen a tea case quite as well crafted as this piece by master wood artisan, Norio Tanno. Whenever I’m in Hokkaido, I make it a point to meet with him, just to get a dose of inspiration for our own wood designs. Seeing him pass down his skills to his son Masakage Tanno, makes me want to do an apprenticeship with him! This Tea Case is one of his masterpieces in my opinion. It is full of beautiful surprises and a delight to handle. Incredibly intricate, the case has multiple components that are all handcrafted in solid wood with wood joinery techniques. An exterior case houses an interior canister that perfectly slides together. A foldable tea scoop sits securely on top of a small knob on the lid of the interior canister. All the pieces have their place.

Over the summer we got married. Our friend, Anna, gave us the best pre-wedding day gift from the historic Russ & Daughters grocers. It was one of their signature mini coolers containing caviar and all the complementing sides needed for the two of us to enjoy before the chaos of the big day. It was a thoughtful gift that we have to admit, started us off on a very bad and expensive caviar addiction. It also got us thinking about all the proper caviar accessories we were missing from our cabinets. It didn’t make sense to eat such a delicacy with the existing bowls and metal spoons we had. Caviar should be eaten with utensils of inert materials, such as shells, that are not chemically reactive so they don’t taint the flavour.
We knew what we needed but everything we were encountering in the market didn’t suit our taste. This prompted us to think that what we were really looking for were utensils that felt precious and one of a kind. Something artisanal that was made by hand. We knew the perfect person who could help us – our friend Pat Kim, and that’s how this collaboration started. Pat's studio based in Brooklyn, Pat Kim Design, has been mastering mother of pearl as a material for quite some time so when we approached him with the idea, it was a natural fit. He was immediately up for exploring the concept. The result is a collection of caviar serving utensils for functional presentation that utilizes the natural shape of abalone shell while retaining the pureness in flavour of caviar.

I am Withered Yabukita Icho Sencha Tea. Put the kettle on, it's time for tea! My leaves have been withered for a night to bring out the fresh, peachy notes in me.

Curator's Notes

'Icho' is a traditional process in which the yabukita leaves are left to wither overnight before steaming the leaves. This is to oxidize the leaves in a controlled manner bringing out the fresh, peach-like fragrance of the variety. The uplifting and refreshing qualities of this sencha tea make it pleasant to drink for all types of occasions. We fell in love with this tea after a visit to a teahouse in Kyoto and drink it regularly. The tea leaves originate from a farm that uses only organic fertilizer.

Curator's Notes

It’s interesting to think that not much has changed with a light bulb since 1879 when Edison invented the first commercially viable model. When we discovered that Yoshiki Tsukamoto designed his own light bulbs, it was refreshing to say the least. Although these bulbs come in standard shapes and screw bases, their carbon or tungsten filaments are completely unique! Each blown glass bulb glows with slender filaments that wrap and wind into distinct sculptural patterns. Used for sconces, lamps, overhead pendants, exposed light bulb fixtures and anywhere creative accent lighting is needed.

With 40 pieces in each box, the nanohana candles are a great value. Each candle is made from unscented canola oil wax using traditional techniques, but what makes them really special is it's hollow washi paper core. The flame produced by the paper wick is known in Japan for producing a brighter more unique flame. Each candle burns for approximately 50 mins. I’ve always thought a product should become more beautiful over its lifespan. With the Siwa bags and accessories, a beautiful texture and patina appears on its surface through usage that really gives the piece a unique character. Made from a specialty paper manufacturing process, the Naoron paper has a soft and leathery like feel, and is completely water resistant.

When packing for your travels sounds daunting, sometimes all that’s required are a few organizational tools. These sophisticated leather cases in three different sizes are great for transporting objects and act as beautiful desk trays when you arrive at your destination. Each case features topstitching and red tabs that fasten the cognac-hued leather panels together. The large size can hold pencils and stationary tools, medium can hold glasses and small can hold earphones or jewelry. The can also nest within each other easily.

I just love how these exist in the world and all of Yacmii's tiny, intricate creations! Aptly described as 'sculpture embroidery' for their 3-D expressions, Yacmii uses premium silk and cotton thread made in Kyoto to stitch eace piece slowly, creating a stereoscopic life-like effect. Her works are inspired by nature but most often by animals like these charming pins that call out your inner spirit animal.

Curator's Notes

Boxwood combs have a long history in Japan as both supernatural objects and cosmetic accessories. Today the combs are appreciated, as much for their aesthetic beauty as their functionality and Jusun-Ya has become renowned for their high-quality versions. Since 1875, the company has been using original production methods from the Nara period (8 th C.). They gather boxwood boards, fumigate the wood, then store the bundles for ten years making them thoroughly dry and warp resistant. When the wood is ready, each comb tooth is measured by eye and sawed by hand. The combs are resistant to static electricity and help promote healthy hair. We love how the teeth will smooth out and glide easier with frequent use and how the amber colour of the wood deepens with age! In contemporary times, many of the combs have a multi-purpose function. The Fine Tooth Boxwood Comb is used for short cropped hair.

Cooking is so much more enjoyable with the right set of tools! When you consider the research and development, process and craftsmanship that went into this kitchen prep collection, it’s no wonder it won many design awards. Made by stainless steel masters in Toyama, the bowls are built to pour well and are easy to clean. They also return to their center of gravity so that they don’t tip over. We also love how each component nests perfectly together for easy storage in small spaces. The various size options for lids and strainers are very multi-functional. Do anything from straining tofu while you cut into portions, or sealing a bowl for tossing salad. Afterwards place a lid on a bowl for an eco-friendly food storage container to preserve leftovers in the refrigerator instead of plastic wrap. Mix and match to create your perfect go-to set for preparing and storing all your favourite meals.

When viewed from above, this stool looks as finely folded as an origami sculpture. Its tapered edges give it a light and delicate appearance, but its solid wood body and well-crafted joinery make the stool durable and sturdy. Due to its sharp angles, it fits well in corners and against walls, but I love it as a side table that looks modern and fresh.
