I t’s very exciting to have a donabe be a part of the award winning line of cookware, Ambai, designed by Makoto Koizumi. These earthenware pots have been used in Japanese cooking for centuries, with special properties ideal for even heat distribution and one-pot meals. Koizumi-san refines the traditional cooking vessel into a modern piece with clean lines and a simpler shape. The donabe comes with both a ceramic top and a circular lid of sawara cypress reminiscent of the Wood Drop Lid and great for infusing deep flavor. As usual, Koizumi-san designs to improve the user experience – the interior of the donabe is marked with lines to indicate the correct water level for different amounts of rice. A piece that draws from the best of tradition and brings it into modern times!

This is a clay teapot with a red earthen colour - a reminder of its original source of material from the rich terra of the Aichi Prefecture. It seems to exist in quiet peace embodying memories of all the teas it has brewed within a flat bottomed body. Its traditional wide opening now sought-after because of the skill required to craft it, is particularly beautiful for allowing us to watch tea leaves, and see how they open.

Perfect symmetry is replaced by dramatic angles, unusual shapes, and irregular texture in this one-of-a-kind piece by Masanobu Ando. This vase is the perfect size for holding a bouquet from a loved one - not too small and not too large. It has a lively form that appears to arch up towards the flowers it holds. The slight twist creates the movement that brings the object seemingly to life. The white glaze is applied with a liberal hand with painterly strokes. The rich matte glaze drips freely down the sides of the clay form, as enticing as freshly applied icing sugar.

I’ve always loved the feeling of drinking from a wooden vessel, especially when they are impeccably crafted. The wide cups are carved to approximately a 2mm wall thickness, so they naturally have a delicate dimension and feel lightweight. Perfect for a little injection of nature in your life!

Kami is a series of wooden drinking vessels and tableware made by master woodworker Takahashi Kougei from Hokkaido, Japan. Each of the pieces in the collection is handcrafted from Sen (castor aralia) trees using highly sophisticated woodturning techniques passed down for generations. The name Kami, means “paper” in Japanese in reference to the thin wall thickness and white tone of the wood.

We discovered this matcha tea powder on a visit to a tearoom in Kyoto. What we love about matcha is not just it's taste and health benefits, but also the ritual of making the perfect cup. The process of making matcha is both fun and relaxing. This matcha is particularly nice because it is cultivated in completely pesticide-free, organic fields. It has a subtle acidity like bright citrus and a beautiful deep green colour. Pair with a bamboo tea bowl, whisk, ladle.

This piece is the result of our collaborative efforts with Ryuji Mitani to create the perfect ice cream cup. Which is what we tried to accomplish by means of a round bowl that fits comfortably in the hand, signature white urushi lacquer and a circular footed stand. Though t he best part is the surprise at the bottom of the cup - artful brushstrokes as beautiful as a painting revealed after eating your way to the end of the dessert!

The pièce de résistance for any factory zoomer collector. This one-of-a-kind set includes a clear container that has a perfectly fitted lid. Within holds seven small glasses ideally used as sake glasses, shot cups or teacups. The glasses slot perfectly inside the container showcasing the studio's masterful craftsmanship. Each glass features the studio's signature black enamel patterns (Carved, Cow, Grid, Big Dots, Lines, Dots and Stripes), that are obtained using various handmade glass techniques such as sandblasting, carving and stenciling. The piece comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by founder Kazumi Tsuji.

I am a Small Hinoki Bath Mat. No claustrophobia over here. I love small spaces!

Curator's Notes

In New York, unfortunately bathrooms are usually the sacrificial lamb for the common good of a home’s square footage. We were finding that as much as some of our local clients loved the original hinoki bath mat, it just didn’t fit into their cramped, urban sized bathrooms. That’s how this smaller version came to exist. Still the same mystifying properties of hinoki wood and impeccable craftsmanship, just a smaller square sized dimension that can fit a little easier into small spaces.

Hinoki wood has a natural resin content, which makes it mold and mildew resistant and the ideal species of wood for the production of bathroom products. This wood bath mat brings the essence of nature into the home, reminiscent of Japanese bathhouses. Bare feet can rest comfortably on the mat’s naturally smooth, non-slip surface while water drains through the slats and glides down the mat’s angled edges.

Curator's Notes

This mixed metal dinner spoon is entirely handmade by Mitsuhiro Konishi in his Okinawa based workshop. We love seeing the irregularities in the hand hammered aged steel heads in contrast to the smooth brass handles. A substantial weight is balanced with an intricate attention to detail with small rivets and subtly curved handles. Takayoshi Narita calls this a nail but it's actually ideal as a hook. The square shaped heads are sturdy but one end is tapered to offer a secure hold on the wall. I like how simple the shape is for a hook with the combination of a very rich texture.

Curator's Notes

These boxes, otherwise known as "Ju-Bako" are made in porcelain with a unique inban pattern - a transfer printed design created by hand that began during the late Edo period in Japan. Ju-Bako boxes are traditionally multi-tiered containers. They are used for food and often reserved for special occasions like “osechi” (a New Year’s dish) or for sports meetings and cherry blossom viewings. We especially love this concept with Ju-Bako boxes made out of wood. However, although these porcelain Ju-Bako boxes in particular can be stacked, they are so delicate and stunning on their own, that we prefer them as a single layer with lid – ideal for jewelry or other precious personal objects!

I am a Spindle Back Children’s Chair. Children like chairs, are easier to build strong than they are to repair when they are older.

Curator's Notes

Ryuji Mitani describes the idea behind these chairs perfectly! He explains that children grow up fast, which seems to be the reason why people tend to buy cheap plastic, disposable furniture for their young ones. After awhile, these disposable items start to overflow in a room. Furniture is an important factor in determining the quality of a room. The same is true for small furniture. Children who use chairs and desks that are made well will be engrained with the feeling of wood, the feeling of its use and the quality of wood items without even knowing it.

Even if the child gets bigger and no longer uses the chair, it is durable enough for an adult. For example, it can be used at the entrance of a home for tying on shoes. Well-crafted, solid wood furniture can be used for hundreds of years. When that child becomes an adult and becomes a parent themself, they can hand the chair over to their child – a piece of furniture they have used intimately since childhood. The story of that person is engraved on the chair.

Life may be no cakewalk, but a slice of good cake can help. I find that the mirror finish of traditional cake servers makes conspicuous the s mear of icing and crumb . Narita-san's modern take on a cake server has a frosty finish and elegant shape that elevates even my humble homemade confections . Marks of grease are camouflaged against the matte, dappled surface, which reminds me of the soft texture of freshly spread buttercream.
