Momoko’s works are inspired by her love of lotuses and banana leaves. Her lotus series are handmade and hand painted with lotus buds and flowers in bloom. The handmade nature of ceramicist Masanobu Ando's work really shines in this silver-glazed vessel. Starting from smooth slabs of clay, Ando-san molds and shapes the raw material by hand until achieving its final form. The slightly off-kilter shape and variations in texture have the human touch that's missing from a perfect cylinder. The silver glaze, striking from the start, gains new dimension as it develops a natural patina with use. The unconventional shape gives the piece flexibility in its function - it makes an interesting vase, attractive tool holder, or even an extra-special large drinking vessel.

This special piece is an exclusive collaboration between Nalata Nalata and metal artisan Takayoshi Narita. It comes in two materials, stainless steel and wrought-iron. The box was designed with the intention of creating large uninterrupted planes of texture. The scale is determined to showcase the beauty of Narita-san's materials and process, while also serving as a highly functional storage container that acquires new marks and patination with time and use.

The box is hand forged from wrought-iron through a process of hammering and firing multiple times in quick succession. The rich texture throughout is caused from the iron cooling at different rates after it's hammered, resulting in a unique finish. This box is perfect for storing delicate or occasional cutlery that needs better protection than a kitchen drawer.

I am a small Round Tamagoyaki Omelet Pan. Eggs are round, I am round. It’s a no brainer, we were destined for each other!

Curator's Notes

Tamagoyaki, meaning, “grilled egg” is a multilayered Japanese style omelet. Often, the eggs are used for nigiri, sushi rolls or breakfast dishes. We love these Ambai Tamagoyaki pans designed by Makoto Koizumi mainly because of their dimensions. The ideal dimensions for about a one or two people household and is often all you need, especially when storage space is scarce. Of course, the pans aren’t limited to frying up eggs – they are fantastic for roasting spices and other small tasks.

I just love how these exist in the world and all of Yacmii's tiny, intricate creations! Aptly described as 'sculpture embroidery' for their 3-D expressions, Yacmii uses premium silk and cotton thread made in Kyoto to stitch eace piece slowly, creating a stereoscopic life-like effect. Her works are inspired by nature but most often by animals like these charming pins that call out your inner spirit animal.

Curator's Notes

This tray really showcases the Japanese tatara technique of hand forming slabs of clay that Tajimi city, Ando-san's birth place, is known for in the world of ceramics. When I first saw this piece, I loved it for its hand made qualities, imperfections and irregular edges. Just an observation, as with all of Ando-san's 'Division Series' trays, we feel like the pieces really shine when some of the sections are left empty.

Curator's Notes

We love wood surfaces as an attractive way to display or serve, and it was a great pleasure to work with Makoto Koizumi to create our own version of something we use every day. It’s remarkable how much work lies behind an end product that’s so minimal. With the use of traditional hand tools, each tray is carved from a single piece of wood carefully selected by Makoto Koizumi for grain pattern, resulting in a continuous form with softly rimmed edges and a shallow concavity. We wanted something that looked fresh and new, but with an appeal that wouldn’t expire. We feel that this tray holds the essence of Koizumi-san's ethos – a beautiful fixture of everyday life with its own whimsical character. Holding the tray in my hands, I admire how the grain moves across the wooden surface like ripples in a pool of water, and I’m reminded of an old Japanese proverb that Koizumi-san himself passed on to us: “Spare no trouble on anything you do, and put your whole heart into everything.”

At first glance, these paper flowers seem as delicate as their real counterparts; however, these intricately cut and shaped blooms are made of innovative Naoron paper construction to be waterproof and tear resistant. Each flower has distinctive symbolism and these blossoms are an enduring way of communicating them. Oribe ware has a rich history in Japanese culture, dating back to the 16th century. It differs from Chinese Celadon due to its deep, rich color that is closer to hunter green or forest green than the pale sea foam of celadon. Within the natural variations of texture, wonderful scenes of nature emerge and dissolve - mountains and hills, lakes and streams… all existing within the mysterious green glaze of this Oribe bowl. This bowl is quite large and deep. It is ideal for serving salads but can also be used as an ikebana flower arranging vessel.

Curator's Notes

‘Ten Ten’ in Japanese translates to ‘dab dab’ relating to the hand-painted dabs of white that playfully pattern these factory zoomer works. A great surface for serving brightly colored desserts and snacks. They add such an artful touch to table settings. The pieces are mouth-blown, hand-painted with white glass enamel, then re-fired to create a permanent pattern that won’t scratch off or wash away. This pattern is also sometimes known as the “Snow Snow” pattern.

I am an 8" Wrought-Iron Frying Pan. Allow me to specify. I can sauté and sear but especially egg fry.

Curator's Notes

The hand-forged frying pan is the centerpiece of Takayoshi Narita's collection - representing both the artisan's high level of craftsmanship, and his fine arts background. It was the first piece of cookware he created, and served as a catalyst in his pivot from fine arts to metalworking.

The pan is made from four pieces: basin, handle, and two rivets. Heat does not transfer to the handle as the rivets absorb the majority of heat when cooking. Everything is hand forged by Narita-san himself, requiring hours of physical labor to transform iron from a solid mass to a perfectly thin pan. The result is a gorgeous and highly functional pan that, when properly seasoned, becomes naturally non-stick.

There is something about old fashioned coffee grinders that add to the experience of drinking coffee but there is nothing old fashioned about the functionality behind the grinding mechanism of this particular piece. The manual grinder has been thoroughly considered as it can be adjusted to your preferred grind settings for the perfect cup every time. If you appreciate the finer nuances of coffee preparation you would be happy to know that the burrs of this piece are made of ceramic that delicately shaves each whole bean for a more consistent grind instead of crushing it.

This katakuchi has such a graceful form that when I picked it up, my hands were surprised to meet the sturdy, practical sides of stainless steel. They say that sake tastes somehow better when served from a katakuchi, a bit like wine does when served from a decanter. But I’d use this vessel to serve anything that called for a pour — salad dressings, sauces, broths, matcha... all would fall beautifully from the delicate spout of this petal-like katakuchi.

Momentum Orii has spent years developing a variety of treatments used to produce different textures and colors on copperwares. Most noteworthy amongst their vast series of products is the ‘Tone’ collection designed by Yukitoshi Toda. The trays in this collection are all solid copper but have different finishes. It’s a matter of personal preference which finish you gravitate towards. Each one is special in their own way, which is precisely why they are so fascinating. The undersides are untreated to really show off the copper core of each dish.

It’s so satisfying to me when I find a kitchen tool that has been thoughtfully designed for a specific purpose. Makoto Koizumi, with his deep sensitivity to the rhythm of everyday life, has designed this grater for use especially with ginger. The rough porcelain surface easily reduces ginger to a spicy pulp. The surrounding basin conveniently catches the grated ginger, minimizing mess and waste. Also, the piece looks great on your countertop—no need to hide away!

I am a Kujira Whale Knife. Of all the mammals in the deep blue sea, I am the sharpest there ever will be.

Curator's Notes

This knife gains its namesake from the largest mammals of the sea - whales, or kujira in Japanese. The Kujira Knife has a wonderful origin story that begins with blacksmith, Toru Yamashita. Inspired to create a knife that is at once functional and safe for a child to use for a simple task like sharpening a pencil, Mr. Yamashita forged the tip of the knife in a rounded shape. With a large head and thinner handle, the knife resembled a Sperm whale, and thus the first knife from the Kujira Knife collection was born. The collection now comprises a whole family of whales that include six different forms of different species like the bryde’s, mink and fin whale. Although they can still be used to sharpen pencils, they can also be used as utility knives or, as we like to use them, for chopping mint during cocktail preparations.

I am Popcorn on the Cob. I’m the corniest of the bunch.

I’m a big popcorn eater! Sometimes all I want is popcorn with butter and a dash of salt. That’s why it’s handy having these 100% pesticide free cobs in the pantry to satisfy those snack cravings especially since the shelf life for popcorn ears is basically indefinite ensuring fresh popcorn every time. There are a variety of methods you can cook it – on the cob in the microwave with a paper bag or my preferred method, loose kernels on the stovetop. Here are instructions for the latter method:

Stovetop Method

Remove all popcorn kernels from the cob into a prep bowl
Add a tablespoon of oil and 3 popcorn kernels to a large pot.
Cover with lid. Over medium-high heat cook until all 3 kernels pop.
Take the three kernels out of the pot.
Add the loose popcorn kernels to the pot.
Cover and take the pot off of the heat. Wait 30 seconds.
Put the pot back on the heat for around 2 minutes, shaking the pot periodically.
After around 2 minutes after the popping slows down, remove the pot from the heat.
Remove lid and allow the remaining kernels to pop.
Add melted butter, coarse salt and pepper if desired.

Narita-san doesn't normally make a bowl of this size. It is a custom piece for our Forging Shadows exhibition with the artisan. The textures achieved in his hand hammered stainless steel pieces really remind us of the moon's surface so we thought it would be appropriate to request a super simple large bowl. Its intended to be a fruit bowl or a big bowl for a coffee table. The overall shape is simple so it speaks about the textures and the shadows that they create.

I am SKURO Kuromai Black Rice. Move aside açaí, there’s a new antioxidant in town.

Curator's Notes

I eat rice almost everyday so quality rice is important to me and I like knowing where my rice is from. It took me a really long time to taste the difference in rice grains from different regions but just like with coffee and many things, one type of rice is not the same as another.
Kuromai Black Rice is also known as purple rice or ‘forbidden rice’. It is coveted in Japan and in high demand for its incredible health benefits. Some say the outer shell of black rice, the layer that contains many of the nutritional benefits, has one of the highest amounts of antioxidants found in food… so yes, move aside açaí. It is also high in vitamin E and is a good source of iron. Yoshiki Tsukamoto of SKLO - who also designs light bulbs and has a love of antiques, go figure - owns a small family-run rice farm and produces this particular type of rice under the name SKURO. The farm uses no agricultural chemicals and only organic fertilizer. I tried all their varieties and it’s super safe to say that if there were such an award, SKURO rice would win grain of the year in my books.
If you want to take it all the way with fancy rice, try adding one teaspoon of ‘Kuromai Black Rice’ to every 200g of ‘Koshihikari White Rice’. This will turn your rice pale purple (and extra festive!) - usually reserved for special celebrations in Japan.

Curator's Notes

This special piece is an exclusive collaboration between Nalata Nalata and metal artisan Takayoshi Narita. It comes in two materials, stainless steel and wrought-iron. The box was designed with the intention of creating large uninterrupted planes of texture. The scale is determined to showcase the beauty of Narita-san's materials and process, while also serving as a highly functional storage container that acquires new marks and patination with time and use.

The box is hand forged from stainless steel through a process of hammering and firing multiple times in quick succession. The rich texture throughout is caused from the steel cooling at different rates after it's hammered, resulting in a unique finish. This box is perfect for storing delicate or occasional cutlery that needs better protection than a kitchen drawer.
