Wooden vessels make me feel like I'm drinking out of a piece of art and I especially like that feeling. The mug and handle are carved with such attention and care.
"Cara" is a series of egg-shaped tablewares making the most of the warmth of wood as a material and Japanese thin-wood-curving techniques. The curvatures of the pieces are meant to mimic the egg so as to fit gently within your hands.

The unglazed surface of this clay teapot remains porous, absorbing the natural oils of the tea leaves. Much like a cast iron pan develops a seasoning with use, the teapot will gradually form a layer of accumulated oils, imparting its own unique flavor to each tea that you brew. Its basin is wide to better release the aroma and taste of tea leaves, and its flat design works especially well for black teas that require higher temperatures.

Nambu tekki cast iron is renown for use as cookware because of its superior heat retention and versatility. Produced in Iwate, these two handled pans are suitable for an oven, gas stovetop or induction range, along with over the grill for an oven-to-table convenience. In Japan, these particular pans are often used to cook various sukiyaki dishes that require being left in the oven for long periods of time, but we use them in our home for anything from bacon and eggs to cornbread. They are available in three different sizes and stack within each other for ease of storage.

Tamagoyaki, meaning, “grilled egg”, is a multilayered Japanese style omelet. Often, the eggs are used for nigiri, sushi rolls, or breakfast dishes. We love these Ambai Tamagoyaki pans for their dimensions. The scaled down size is often all you need for a one or two person household, especially when storage space is scarce. Of course, the pans aren’t limited to frying up eggs – they are fantastic for roasting spices and other smaller tasks.

‘Ten Ten’ in Japanese translates to ‘dab dab’ relating to the hand-painted dabs of white that playfully pattern these factory zoomer works. A great surface for serving brightly colored desserts and snacks. They add such an artful touch to table settings. The pieces are mouth-blown, hand-painted with white glass enamel, then re-fired to create a permanent pattern that won’t scratch off or wash away. This pattern is also sometimes known as the “Snow Snow” pattern.

The slippers are covered with an incredibly supple deer leather form and feature gel soles for added comfort. We especially love the attention to the bottom sole with an intricately etched Seigaiha ‘wave’ pattern etched into the leather.

The texture and finish on the iron scissors series were the first features to appeal to me. They have an antique vintage look with a forged metal texture all along the handle, yet cut firmly like more modern scissors. The sharpness achieved from the handmade blades is unexpected, but they make the perfect shears for all types of bouquets and arrangements.

I am a Half-Moon Boxwood Comb. The more I'm used, the better for us both... My teeth will feel smooth and your hair will too!

Curator's Notes

Boxwood combs have a long history in Japan as both supernatural objects and cosmetic accessories. Today the combs are appreciated, as much for their aesthetic beauty as their functionality and Jusun-Ya has become renowned for their high-quality versions. Since 1875, the company has been using original production methods from the Nara period (8 th C.). They gather boxwood boards, fumigate the wood, then store the bundles for ten years making them thoroughly dry and warp resistant. When the wood is ready, each comb tooth is measured by eye and sawed by hand. The combs are resistant to static electricity and help promote healthy hair. We love how the teeth will smooth out and glide easier with frequent use and how the amber colour of the wood deepens with age! In contemporary times, many of the combs have a multi-purpose function. The Half-Moon Boxwood Comb is used as an everyday comb or pocket comb for regular hair.

I am an Iron Doorstop. Does someone want to slam the door in your face? I'd like to see them try!

Curator's Notes

I've made many an excuse for an ineffective doorstop. I'll say, "this door's too heavy," or "there must be a strong wind tunnel!" as again and again, the door slams shut despite the wedge I've placed to prevent it. This iron doorstop puts all other ones to shame! Designed to hug the door's bottom edge, it prevents movement in either direction and blends seamlessly into the shape of the door itself. A fluid ring-shaped handle provides an easy grasping point. When not in use, the doorstop becomes a bold iron sculpture.

Aesthetically, they have that antique look with a forged steel finish, but cut like more modern shears with its thicker blades and a beveled edge.

The uncoated interior provides all the nutritional properties that cast iron gives off in water as it boils. The curvilinear lines were the artisan's signature giving this teapot an especially significant quality as a symbol of the late Ogasawara, one of Japan's most celebrated iron masters.

Curator's Notes

Boxwood combs have a long history in Japan as both supernatural objects and cosmetic accessories. Today the combs are appreciated, as much for their aesthetic beauty as their functionality and Jusun-Ya has become renowned for their high-quality versions. Since 1875, the company has been using original production methods from the Nara period (8 th C.). They gather boxwood boards, fumigate the wood, then store the bundles for ten years making them thoroughly dry and warp resistant. When the wood is ready, each comb tooth is measured by eye and sawed by hand. The combs are resistant to static electricity and help promote healthy hair. We love how the teeth will smooth out and glide easier with frequent use and how the amber colour of the wood deepens with age! In contemporary times, many of the combs have a multi-purpose function. The Small Sugitate Boxwood Comb is used to straighten the sides and backs of traditional coiffures.

Curator's Notes

Turning on this pendant lamp instantly creates a cozy atmosphere in the relaxed aura of its glow. The glass shade is a suitable size for smaller spaces. Its milky shade and gentle shape balance it somewhere between unobtrusive and striking. And then you have the adjustable height feature! A fascinating pulley system counterbalanced by weighty beads contained in a metal column counterweight allows you to smoothly adjust the height with a simple pull. I love the idea of hanging it in a reading nook and pulling it down to the perfect height for illuminating the pages of your book, then raising it when no longer in use.

Soft-boiled eggs are one of my favorite breakfast treats. I’ve even ordered them in restaurants on more occasions than I care to admit. I see the egg holders as a vehicle to make enjoying my morning eggs better. To me, organic eggs on a natural wood holder just feels right! Give it a try. "Cara" is a series of egg-shaped tablewares making the most of the warmth of wood as a material and Japanese thin-wood-curving techniques. The curvatures of the pieces are meant to mimic the egg so as to fit gently within your hands.

Very new Cara products may have some trace remainder of the polyurethane coating odor. Before using the cup for the first time, leave tea leaves or coffee grounds inside the cup for several hours to remove any coating odor.
Avoid using microwave and dish washing machine as coating may get cracked
Also don't soak it in the water for a long period of time
Use a thinner dish detergent with a sponge to wash, rinse with warm water, then wipe with soft cloth and let it dry well

I am a Green Pouring Vessel . Think of me as a soy sauce vase, full of umami grace.

Curator's Notes

This pouring vessel is truly something special. Like a droplet of water suspended in flight, the spherical body tapers gently to a spout with a poetry that makes my heart ache. Its beauty doesn’t hinder its function – the base fits wonderfully in the hand with a satisfying weight, and the delicate spout allows you to pour liquids with intention, from soy sauce to salad dressing. But my favorite thing about this vessel is the way it moves. Tip it over lightly with your hand, and the piece comes to life in a pendulous dance, its spout tracing spirals in the air as it rocks and sways, eventually settling back into its center of balance. Mesmerizing!

These Kamenoko Tawashi brushes are widely used in Japan, and rightfully so. Invented in 1907 by Mr. Seizaemon Nishio with palm fibers, they’re popularity spread because of the palm fibers natural ability to massage sore muscles, exfoliate and create radiant skin.  When we discovered them in Japan, we fell in love! The natural material has stood the test of time as it continues to be a household favorite in Japan and beyond.

I am a Large Carved Flower Dish. A flower with curves is my favorite thing to serve.

Curator's Notes

The detailed floral design featured on this dish is based on one that the Imamura family has been using for generations to set their porcelain pieces apart. The original design has its source in the floral patterns of Arita ware, Japanese porcelain made in Saga Prefecture during the late 17th century. This rich history is a huge part of Jicon, who aims to bring the tradition of porcelain ware into modern times. The memorable floral design reimagined by designer Masanori Oji is hand-carved by the artisans of Jicon into white Amasuka Touseki clay. Complex lines and detailed embellishment are balanced by a simple dark rim and a semi-matte ash glaze.
