Originally from southern China, the Hmong gradually migrated south during the 18th century due to political unrest and to find more workable land. Chila Bags is a Colombian fair trade brand that works personally with the women of the Wayuu, an indigenous tribe located in the very north coast of Colombia in a beautiful region called La Guajira. By working directly with the Wayuu women who hand knit each bag, Chila Bags has cut out the middleman, making sure the women are fairly paid and have exceptional working conditions. The bags are handwoven to respect the traditions and culture of the people. Skills are passed down from generation to generation and each bag is one of a kind with all designs and color choices unique to the knitter. A nonprofit organization located in Panajachel, a small town on Lake Atitlan in the western highlands of Guatemala, is dedicated to connecting 120 indigenous artisans from the surrounding area to international markets. Through Fair Trade programs, they empower women artisans, their families, and their communities to strengthen their entrepreneurial ecosystems. The foundation leverages traditional Maya heritage and art to rescue, preserve and promote the ancestral culture of the highland artisans with a focus on backstrap weaving. By earning a fair price for their work, the artisans are able to provide sustenance, medical care and education to their children and contribute economically in their communities.
The textiles are entirely produced on traditional backstrap looms, which have been in use since the time of the Maya empire. Nepal/Tibetan Himalayan cashmere is renowned as some of the softest cashmere in the world. Cashmere is extremely light and luxuriously soft yet keeps you extremely warm. Cashmere comes from the softest undercoat of a goat and it takes an average of three goats wool to make one scarf!
All of our cashmere scarves and throws are handloomed in Pokhara Nepal by blind, deaf, or disabled weavers. We partner with a local non-profit organization that provides them with the tools, training, and support necessary to become independent through weaving. In Nepal, the disabled are discriminated against in mainstream society. They have little or no opportunities for work. Weaving allows them to enjoy an independent life, increases their self-esteem and also improves the way they are treated by their family. The organization further gives back to the disabled community by donating white canes, hearing aids and wheel-chairs, providing food, medicine and essential goods for aged-care homes, helping the poor and distributing relief to earthquake and landslide victims. With such a great cause, these are our most favorite pieces!

Sora Nomad not only supports artisans through Fair Trade practices, but utilizes eco leather in their production process. Leather tanning can be one of the worst pollutants to the air, water and land surrounding its production. In collaboration with local artisans, Fair Trade Netherlands and The European Fair Trade Association, a new leather was born in India free of harsh chemical compounds. Eco leather is biodegradable and utilizes grade A leather. This leather is created and tanned without the use of azo dyes, penta chloro phenol, chrome IV and formaldehyde to name a few. A win for the producer, consumer and the environment!

Artisan Profile

Laos is the most heavily bombed country per capita in the world. From 1963-1973, Laos became an unwitting pawn during the Second Indochinese War. During this time, the US Air Force dropped a planeload of cluster bombs every eight minutes for nine consecutive years. Right after the war, villagers began gathering aluminum from exploded bombs and made it into spoons. The villagers were taught this skill by a family that relocated to Ban Naphia from Houaphan Province, further north. In the early days, five families produced the recycled bomb spoons. Today, there are approximately 13 families producing more than 150,000 spoons per year from war and non-war scrap aluminum. Production has expanded to include bracelets, earrings, and pendants.
We work with artisans in Ban Naphia located in the Xieng Khuang Province who source aluminum from airplane parts and bombs dropped throughout Laos during the Secret War (Vietnam War) in the 1960s. The community which produces the recycled bomb products have all been trained by Helvetas, a Swiss NGO, on how to handle the metals safely, including smelting and cleaning the aluminum before use.
It is important to note that of all the bombs dropped in Laos, 30% did not explode. Unexploded ordnance (UXO) continues to pose a significant threat to the safety of villagers in rural Lao. In their search for scrap metal, many villagers encounter UXO and suffer catastrophic injuries. The generous spirit and ingenuity of Lao artisans is evident in our collection of recycled bomb products. War and persistent air raids in the 1960s left the countryside littered with bomb and metal shrapnel. The remnants of this legacy have been transformed into emblems of peace.

The art of jewelry making is as old as the Indian civilization itself. For centuries women have been adorned in intricate, ornamental designs. The innovative techniques and designs have evolved over time but the jewelry remains true to Indian culture and traditions.
This collection of elegant, statement jewelry is handcrafted by a cooperative of women artisans located in rural areas around Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut India. The women, who were previously unemployed, are empowered with the means to earn a fair wage. They are able to work from home where they can also look after their children. The co-op doesn’t just give the artisans a source of income, but also provides respect in a society where women are viewed as second-class citizens. The artisans draw inspiration from traditional Indian jewelry designs and strive to retain the innate nature of each raw material while keeping a global audience in mind.

TARA (Trade Alternative Reform Action) Projects made its humble beginning in the early seventies with the objective of creating avenues of income for economically disadvantaged artisans and craftsmen in Delhi, India. Encouraged by its initial success, the project gradually extended its socioeconomic and trade reform activities to the adjoining states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan in Northern India.
At present TARA Projects employs more than 1000 artisan families directly and indirectly by providing sustainable income through handicraft production. They provide education and health care to the families of makers and impart training and capacity building to enhance producer skills. The organization is committed to providing support services to the marketing of handicrafts on Fair Trade principles, while addressing community developmental needs of the artisan makers.
