All of our cashmere scarves and throws are handloomed in Pokhara Nepal by blind, deaf, or disabled weavers. We partner with a local non-profit organization that provides them with the tools, training, and support necessary to become independent through weaving. In Nepal, the disabled are discriminated against in mainstream society. They have little or no opportunities for work. Weaving allows them to enjoy an independent life, increases their self-esteem and also improves the way they are treated by their family. The organization further gives back to the disabled community by donating white canes, hearing aids and wheel-chairs, providing food, medicine and essential goods for aged-care homes, helping the poor and distributing relief to earthquake and landslide victims. With such a great cause, these are our most favorite pieces!

Artisan Profile

This unique jewelry is from the same master craftsmen who produced jewelry for the Royal Family. This is the first time these pieces are available in the West. The main motif used in this piece was initially reserved for the Royal Court and is a stylized representation of the dok phikoun flower, indigenous to the region. Local monks have for centuries taught of the dok phikoun’s powers of good fortune and promotion of a long and happy life. There are only a few silversmiths who know how to make these intricate designs.
As Laos’ culture evolves and its products become commercialized, many of the master handcraft skills are being lost. Orijyn helps the master craftsmen find markets for their products outside of Laos. By supporting these crafts, you help to sustain the community culture and supply much needed income, preventing families from having to migrate to the city to find commoditized, low paying work. You will feel the satisfaction of helping an appreciative group of people make a better life for themselves. A portion of your purchase also goes to PADETC, a non-profit alternative learning school in Vientiane, Laos. Artisan Profile

Laos is a country of diverse ethnic groups, each with unique and highly adept craft and artisan skills, but the pressures of modern life and the availability of cheap factory made imports have resulted in Lao people giving up their crafts and their rural livelihoods. As a result, many of the crafts of Laos are vanishing art forms. Our design and production teams work closely with artisan groups in Laos to create items that fit modern, natural lifestyles while still retaining the spirit of traditional craftsmanship. Guided by the principles of fair trade, we work to create employment opportunities for villagers, especially women, and to reduce poverty and each product is made and finished in the villages.
The cotton used to make these pillows is planted by hand and watered by the monsoon rains. It takes eight months for the plant to produce the cotton flower, then it is picked by hand, ginned by hand (a difficult and tedious activity), and then spun into yarn by hand. Traditional wood and bamboo looms are used by weavers to transform the cotton fiber into cotton cloth.
Indigo dying is a skill that is passed on through generations and is an ancient art steeped in myths. Menstruating women are kept away from the indigo jars for fear of upsetting the “indigo spirit” and rendering the dye useless. Indigo dye is made from the leaves and shoots of the “kharm” plant, which grows in many areas in Laos. Getting the raw materials for indigo may be easy, but making it is an art.  It involves fermentation of the “kharm” and keeping the mixture in air-tight jars at the required temperature.

Ironwork artisans, living in an underprivileged community in the Kandal Province, approximately 45 minutes from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, make this recycled bomb shell and bullet jewelry. Bomb casings are left over from Cambodia's wartime three decades ago. Ironwork artisans skillfully mold bomb shells into beautiful jewelry pieces, introducing a small income to underprivileged communities. While Cambodia has enjoyed years of peace and development since the war and atrocities of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, today 30% of the population still live below the poverty line (on less than $1.25 per day).
By purchasing these bombshell products, you are helping to create fair trade jobs for disadvantaged Cambodians with high levels of unemployment. Artisans are paid fairly and equitably for their skillful work, which keeps families together with food on their table. A liveable and reliable income is especially important for women as it allows them to raise healthy babies and children and provide for their future. Sidai Designs is a social enterprise in Arusha, Tanzania, creating contemporary luxury beaded jewelry, based on traditional Maasai beading techniques and design. Founded in 2011, Sisai Designs supports Maasai women by providing economic empowerment through fair trade. They are passionate in their mission to help overcome poverty and improve women’s social standing, believing that artisanal design led handcraft is a powerful tool to bring about positive change.
Their jewelry is created entirely by hand using a combination of ingeniously upcycled products. Traditional glass beads are intricately joined using thread salvaged from old grain bags and enhanced with recycled metal beads, oil canisters and yoghurt pots to create the boning and luxury soft leather and sterling silver to create simple, elegant fastenings. Jewelry is an integral element of the Maasai identity and through their products, Sidai Designs endeavor to tell their stories and preserve the traditions of this unique tribe.

Artisan Profile

Laos is the most heavily bombed country per capita in the world. From 1963-1973, Laos became an unwitting pawn during the Second Indochinese War. During this time, the US Air Force dropped a planeload of cluster bombs every eight minutes for nine consecutive years. Right after the war, villagers began gathering aluminum from exploded bombs and made it into spoons. The villagers were taught this skill by a family that relocated to Ban Naphia from Houaphan Province, further north. In the early days, five families produced the recycled bomb spoons. Today, there are approximately 13 families producing more than 150,000 spoons per year from war and non-war scrap aluminum. Production has expanded to include bracelets, earrings, and pendants.
We work with artisans in Ban Naphia located in the Xieng Khuang Province who source aluminum from airplane parts and bombs dropped throughout Laos during the Secret War (Vietnam War) in the 1960s. The community which produces the recycled bomb products have all been trained by Helvetas, a Swiss NGO, on how to handle the metals safely, including smelting and cleaning the aluminum before use.
It is important to note that of all the bombs dropped in Laos, 30% did not explode. Unexploded ordnance (UXO) continues to pose a significant threat to the safety of villagers in rural Lao. In their search for scrap metal, many villagers encounter UXO and suffer catastrophic injuries. The generous spirit and ingenuity of Lao artisans is evident in our collection of recycled bomb products. War and persistent air raids in the 1960s left the countryside littered with bomb and metal shrapnel. The remnants of this legacy have been transformed into emblems of peace.

Who are the Hmong? They are an Asian ethnic group from the mountain regions of China, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. Originally from southern China, the Hmong gradually migrated south during the 18th century due to political unrest and to find more workable land. Today, many Hmong are located in the remote thick forests and mountains of the northern Thai regions and are well integrated into Thai society. They are rich in culture, family, and art and are distinctive in their fabric patterns and vibrant costumes. The Hmong tribal groups have expressed their faith, belief and way of life into each piece of fabric, making each piece come to life with an amazing history behind it!
