Originally from southern China, the Hmong gradually migrated south during the 18th century due to political unrest and to find more workable land. Today, many Hmong are located in the remote thick forests and mountains of the northern Thai regions and are well integrated into Thai society. They are rich in culture, family, and art and are distinctive in their fabric patterns and vibrant costumes. The Hmong tribal groups have expressed their faith, belief and way of life into each piece of fabric, making each piece come to life with an amazing history behind it!

The cotton used to make these pillows is planted by hand and watered by the monsoon rains. It takes eight months for the plant to produce the cotton flower, then it is picked by hand, ginned by hand (a difficult and tedious activity), and then spun into yarn by hand. Traditional wood and bamboo looms are used by weavers to transform the cotton fiber into cotton cloth.
Indigo dying is a skill that is passed on through generations and is an ancient art steeped in myths. Menstruating women are kept away from the indigo jars for fear of upsetting the “indigo spirit” and rendering the dye useless. Indigo dye is made from the leaves and shoots of the “kharm” plant, which grows in many areas in Laos. Getting the raw materials for indigo may be easy, but making it is an art.  It involves fermentation of the “kharm” and keeping the mixture in air-tight jars at the required temperature.

Aid Through Trade was founded in 1993 by a former Peace Corps volunteer. As a founding member of the Fair Trade foundation, their mission is to change the lives of women through ethical, fair, and sustainable employment through bringing fair trade to the fashion world. As one of the leaders in the fair trade industry, they employ more than 125 female artisans in Nepal. Each one-of-a-kind Aid Through Trade piece is handmade by one of these artisans, who take pride in their creations and their ability to support their families.
Most of the pieces are made in the Aid Through Trade office, which is located in Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley. In addition to receiving a fair wage (ATT pays one of the highest wages in the industry) and benefits, artisans working in the office also are provided with a hot lunch each day. A majority of the Roll-On bracelets are crafted by artisans throughout the Nepal countryside. The materials for the bracelets are distributed to villages throughout Nepal, and the women are able to work from home so that they can care for their families and provide for them financially.

A nonprofit organization located in Panajachel, a small town on Lake Atitlan in the western highlands of Guatemala, is dedicated to connecting 120 indigenous artisans from the surrounding area to international markets. Through Fair Trade programs, they empower women artisans, their families, and their communities to strengthen their entrepreneurial ecosystems. The foundation leverages traditional Maya heritage and art to rescue, preserve and promote the ancestral culture of the highland artisans with a focus on backstrap weaving. The textiles are entirely produced on traditional backstrap looms, which have been in use since the time of the Maya empire. This highly specialized weaving technique has been passed down from grandmother to mother and mother to daughter for hundreds of generations and produces intricate, durable textiles. This technique is time consuming but also very versatile and can be used to create fabrics light or heavy, smooth or textured, with endless color combinations and ikat designs.

Artisan Profile

The Cambodia women’s silk weaving cooperative is located in the Takeo Province, a rural, low income area. They employ over 500 weavers from 7 villages. The silk is also produced locally by 350 farmers who grow mulberry trees which rear cocoons from silk worms. The cocoons are spun into silk thread and eventually handloomed into these elegant works of art.
The goal of this social enterprise is to prevent the ancient Cambodian silk weaving tradition from vanishing, while empowering women and contributing to the economic development of more isolated areas. The complex art of silk weaving is a dying ancient tradition but the weaving cooperative trains younger generations to keep it alive. They provide employment opportunities and training for women living in the area who would otherwise be forced to flee to neighboring countries in search of jobs. There, separated from their families and lacking education, they often fall into dangerous situations such as human trafficking, sexual abuse or hard work conditions. By joining the weaving cooperative, the women become financially independent and can work from home so they can care for their children at the same time.

Purchasing these handmade scarves from the Vivaz Women’s Cooperative, located in San Luis Los Ranchos, supports Salvadoran culture and female empowerment. Through international sales of their products, the women are able to gain financial independence and improve the quality of life for their families.
The “añil” or indigo dye they use is indigenous to the region and was once used by the ancient Mayas. Indigo is a natural plant, and only works on natural cotton fabric. The indigo plant is cut and put into water for fermentation. At the end of the bathing process, the deep blue dye is left at the bottom of the waterbed and then used to create these beautiful textiles.
Until the 1800s, indigo was the only way to dye fabrics blue. This made it very popular and it was the #1 export in El Salvador for a long time. However, when synthetic dyes were created, the demand for indigo plummeted, greatly hurting the Salvadoran economy, perpetuating the difficulties of the lives of indigenous people in the region.

In the earliest Peruvian history, you will find examples of the bond between the Incas and alpaca. During the Inca empire, alpaca was only used by royalty because it was valued as the finest material. Alpaca is supple and smooth to the touch. It’s softer than cashmere and warmer and stronger than lamb’s wool. It contains microscopic air pockets which create lightweight clothing with excellent insulating properties. It is a completely natural fiber and there is no use of harsh chemicals in production.
The alpaca live mostly without any boundaries in the highlands of the Peruvian Andes and are not harmed during the shearing process. Their soft padded feet are gentle on the grass terrain and they graze without destroying the root system of the area. Alpaca is the only animal that produces up to 28 natural colors and can be blended into an infinite array of natural shades from inky black to warm chestnuts and snowy white. It is easily dyed in any color and always retains its natural luster.

Sora Nomad not only supports artisans through Fair Trade practices, but utilizes eco leather in their production process. Leather tanning can be one of the worst pollutants to the air, water and land surrounding its production. In collaboration with local artisans, Fair Trade Netherlands and The European Fair Trade Association, a new leather was born in India free of harsh chemical compounds. Eco leather is biodegradable and utilizes grade A leather. This leather is created and tanned without the use of azo dyes, penta chloro phenol, chrome IV and formaldehyde to name a few. A win for the producer, consumer and the environment!
