The Lid Vision Glass is another home run design by 10¹² Terra. As with their other products, this terrarium allows the observer to enjoy the evolution of plant life. The succulent’s roots change as the plant rests on a hand hammered disk, reflecting light off of each facet. Finding the perfectly sized succulent for your chosen size shouldn’t be tricky but is important to display the vision glasses in the best light. Something not too big that will cover the entire disk and something not too small is key.

Chores are usually associated with negative feelings. Tools for cleaning and sweeping are quite often plain, unattractive and tucked behind a wall or hidden in a closet. These brooms designed by acclaimed designer, Masanori Oji, and based on a style from the Edo period. We think they are so beautiful that we love displaying them in our offices and home. The construction of these oval shaker style boxes is incredible! They feature the same swallowtail projections as traditional shaker boxes but instead of a wood construction these are made of natural vegetable tanned leather. In the past they were often used to store dry pantry items like flour, sugar or spices but these versions by Hender Scheme are so beautiful we can see them being used as decorative objects, either stacked or individually. And at this price point, the only thing we suggest is storing cherished mementos instead of flour!

With this Donabe smoker, you can easily cook your favourite smoked dishes at home in as little as half an hour. The base and lid of the donabe become tightly sealed after pouring water around the rim, creating a steamy vessel that won’t release the smoky aroma. You’ll only need a small amount of smoke chips (Japanese Sakura wood chips provided) to notice the smoky flavor permeate your ingredients. The best part is that you can get really creative with the three grates provided and cook anything from seafood and meat to mushrooms and vegetables all at the same time. They are also great to use during potlucks and as a tabletop presentation.

With this showcase, you can do so by taking a single stem and placing it on a pin at the base of the vessel. Turn it upside down and observe as the flower changes. When it is fully dry, flip the case. The dried flower will stand naturally upright while maintaining its beautiful form.

I’ve always preferred to cook using cast iron because of its superior heat retention and even heating surface, but often found traditional cast iron pans to be a little bulky and heavy. This lightweight pan appealed to me because of its contemporary streamlined shape without sacrificing the performance expected from such a versatile material. The pan can be used on any heat source, from a grill to a campfire, but pre-seasoning is recommended for a smooth finish that resists sticking and rust.

I am a “Kamado-san” Rice Donabe. You’d be hard pressed to find anything more patient than me but the one who waits will reap the benefit. The fluffy rice and the crispy edges will leave you hungry for more.

Curator's Notes

We love the premium quality rice that is achieved with this donabe! Rice is noticeable fluffier and shinier with just the perfect amount of crisp on the edges. The exterior glaze on the ceramic donabe promotes far infrared radiation (FIR) allowing heat to penetrate each grain for even cooking. The double-lid feature retains heat similar to a steam-cooker, while the thick bottom gently cooks the rice. Appropriate for gas stoves and makes a beautiful tabletop presentation!

From side view the cut outs have an art deco appeal – coming from a place like New York and seeing architecture from the 1920’s throughout the city, we are particularly fond of design details from this era. Designed for a variety of uses, the slotted shelf bracket can accommodate an adjustable rod to hang items from (available here). Because of their decorative appearance, they would pair nicely with simple, modern environments that need a touch of ornamentation.

Living low to the floor isn’t something we’re accustomed to in North America but I’ve recently found that it brings a whole other dimension to our home environment. The flexibility of a short-legged, foldable table like a chabudai allows you to bring it in and out of storage to create temporary living spaces for needs like studying, having breakfast or afternoon tea. With a few floor cushions sitting on the ground can also be very comfortable on the body.

The simple form of this lid stand combines wonderfully with its hinoki wood. The material is also very functional - the naturally water-resistant properties of hinoki make the piece suitable for the kitchen. Curator's Notes

This container can be used as a lidded dish for serving food or as a storing box for small household items. It is a one-of-a-kind work by Momoko Otani.

Sgraffito is derived from the Italian word “scratch”. It is a technique of applying layers of slip onto a ceramic form and, while semi-dry, removing and etching certain areas to create a contrasting surface design. Momoko’s works are inspired by her love of lotuses and banana leaves. Her white sgraffito series display lotus buds and petals in bloom. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, featuring unique variations. They simply brighten up your day. Ceramics that will be cherished for a lifetime, knowing so many loving hours were put into the making of them!
