Called "zaru" trays in Japanese, these traditional pieces are used to serve cold soba, as the bamboo mat acts as a strainer to prevent the noodles from becoming soggy. This soba noodle tray is made from durable bamboo by the skilled craftsman of Kohchosai Kosuga . The light golden color of the wood provides a pleasant backdrop for the earthy color of soba noodles, and excess water drains into the basin to keep your noodles fresh. Cold soba is the perfect dish to serve during hot summer days, but this tray can also be used to serve vegetables and fruit!

One of the most popular vegetables in Japan is the daikon radish, commonly found grated raw as a refreshing condiment in various meat and fish dishes. This method of preparing the daikon has been around since the Edo Period of the 1600s, as the vegetable is a natural source of enzymes that aid in digestion, and is delicious paired with rich, oily-heavy ingredients like mackerel or steaks. Enter the radish grater, perfectly tailored by designer Makoto Koizumi for your radish-grating needs! Jagged porcelain teeth grind down the daikon to just the right consistency, and the basin on the end catches the fruits of your labor.

This pouring vessel is truly something special. Like a droplet of water suspended in flight, the spherical body tapers gently to a spout with a poetry that makes my heart ache. Its beauty doesn’t hinder its function – the base fits wonderfully in the hand with a satisfying weight, and the delicate spout allows you to pour liquids with intention, from soy sauce to salad dressing. But my favorite thing about this vessel is the way it moves. Tip it over lightly with your hand, and the piece comes to life in a pendulous dance, its spout tracing spirals in the air as it rocks and sways, eventually settling back into its center of balance. Mesmerizing!

Curator's Notes

Ryuji Mitani collaborated with friend Masaki Kanamori to create this piece. Enamel is often perceived in modern times as mass manufactured, but Kanamori is an enamel artist who makes his works entirely by hand. The texture and saturation of handmade enamelware is incomparable to machine made versions. Mitani's smooth black walnut wood lid follows in sentiment. The size is ideal for the dining table to hold flaky finishing salts like Maldon.

A vase full of fresh flowers is a wonderful way to brighten the day, but we love smaller sizes that look good with just a single bloom or sprig. They’re more practical for daily use, and much easier to arrange. It was a joy to work with Makoto Koizumi to take the best of what we love about bud vases and create something special. The series is created with a variety of rare Japanese indigenous wood types. This wooden vase is elegant yet playful, and leans subtly to one side with the beauty of imperfection. The waves of wood grain play with the curves of the vase’s body to add movement to a piece that is dynamic by nature, its appearance seeming to alter as its flowers are refreshed, changing week by week.

Momentum Orii has spent years developing a variety of treatments used to produce different textures and colors on copperwares. Most noteworthy amongst their vast series of products is the ‘Tone’ collection designed by Yukitoshi Toda. The trays in this collection are all solid copper but have different finishes. It’s a matter of personal preference which finish you gravitate towards. Each one is special in their own way, which is precisely why they are so fascinating. The undersides are untreated to really show off the copper core of each dish.

Drinking sake is an integral part of Japanese cuisine and the act of drinking sake is full of intricacies. Out of politeness, it is customary to serve your company first while drinking in a group thus, the Jicon porcelain sake pitcher was designed with this in mind. The pitcher is a communal object for the table as it has a spout on both sides and can be grabbed without changing it's position - Allowing you to serve others and in turn be served easily! The diamond shape is easily gripped in the hands while pouring. Matching sake vessels include the"Hosomi","Subomi" and"Hiraki".

Every day I look forward to having a cup of tea to clear my mind and refuel in the middle of a busy day, and no one understands this better than Susumuya. I am a Dinner Knife. My favourite times of the day are breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s when I come alive and get a real slice of life.

This mixed metal dinner knife is entirely handmade by Mitsuhiro Konishi in his Okinawa based workshop. We love seeing the irregularities in the hand hammered aged steel heads in contrast to the smooth brass handles. I am a limited edition Green Whiskey Glass. I start off neat and depending on how the night goes, might end up a little messy and muddled. No matter what, my lines are drawn clearly so I know when to cut myself off when I’ve reached my limit.

Curator's Notes

To coincide with our Glass Half Full Exhibition, we collaboratively designed a series of whiskey glasses with Kazumi Tsuji. Offered in three different colours and a clear version, these mouth-blown rock glasses feature hand-cut slashes and a smooth rim band for enjoying whiskey's nuances with minimal interference. Whether you like it neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail, these glasses were designed to enhance the experience.

Kamenoko Tawashi brushes are cleaning brushes that have become almost customary in most Japanese households. Invented in 1907 by Mr. Seizaemon Nishio with palm fibers, these unusual scrubs are as effective as they are compelling. When we discovered them there was no turning back to the regular supermarket brushes. Whether it be dishes or shower tiles, these are great for anything that needs a good scrub.

I am a Wooden Cheese Knife. I may be smooth to the touch, but look a little closer and you’ll see that I’m not so clean cut.

Curator's Notes

The shape of this cheese knife reminds us of retro American cutlery that was made with either enamelware or bakelite handles. However, Ryuji Mitani has put his own contemporary twist on these shapes. The entire knife is handcrafted from a single piece of wood. The silhouette is like the wooden shadow of the retro knives that came before it but unlike metal cutlery, this knife is surprisingly light in your hand while still feels strong enough to cut through chunks of cheese with it's thin edged blade.

I am a large brass tray. My surface changes over years of use to obtain a subtler finish over time. Some say that’s called growing old, but I like to think of it as aging gracefully.

The classic shape and IHADA crude casting surface on these trays gives them a sophisticated appearance. Their weight feel substantial and appropriate for daily use while the slow oxidization of the brass keeps its coloration and texture looking richer over many years of usage.

Curator's Notes

These trays are so beautiful in person! In Western culture lacquerware isn't as prevalent as in Japan where lacquereware is well-admired for the skill required to make such items. These wooden Makiji trays are particularly special because they are finished with a very durable lacquer that incorporates diatomaceous earth into it's base layer and top coat. These features make the tray extremely strong and scratch resistant. More than anything, we are in love with the deep red tone. Everything looks good displayed on a Makiji tray!
