This solid cast iron candle case has a saturated surface texture much like many Simplicity ironwares. It has a rich, rusty toned surface allover that adds to it's antique-like quality. A lid provides slight coverage for the tea light which offers ambient mood lighting as the flame flickers from within the case and light shines through the cutout cross motif on the lid.

I am a Kujira Whale Knife. Of all the mammals in the deep blue sea, I am the sharpest there ever will be.

Curator's Notes

This knife gains its namesake from the largest mammals of the sea - whales, or kujira in Japanese. The Kujira Knife has a wonderful origin story that begins with blacksmith, Toru Yamashita. Inspired to create a knife that is at once functional and safe for a child to use for a simple task like sharpening a pencil, Mr. Yamashita forged the tip of the knife in a rounded shape. With a large head and thinner handle, the knife resembled a Sperm whale, and thus the first knife from the Kujira Knife collection was born. The collection now comprises a whole family of whales that include six different forms of different species like the bryde’s, mink and fin whale. Although they can still be used to sharpen pencils, they can also be used as utility knives or, as we like to use them, for chopping mint during cocktail preparations.

Curator's Notes

We love wood surfaces as an attractive way to display or serve, and it was a great pleasure to work with Makoto Koizumi to create our own version of something we use every day. It’s remarkable how much work lies behind an end product that’s so minimal. With the use of traditional hand tools, each tray is carved from a single piece of wood carefully selected by Makoto Koizumi for grain pattern, resulting in a continuous form with softly rimmed edges and a shallow concavity. We wanted something that looked fresh and new, but with an appeal that wouldn’t expire. We feel that this tray holds the essence of Koizumi-san's ethos – a beautiful fixture of everyday life with its own whimsical character. Holding the tray in my hands, I admire how the grain moves across the wooden surface like ripples in a pool of water, and I’m reminded of an old Japanese proverb that Koizumi-san himself passed on to us: “Spare no trouble on anything you do, and put your whole heart into everything.”

I'm a sucker for nice stationary, but have had to practice restraint so that empty notebooks don't pile up before they're filled. However, this notebook by Hender Scheme was special enough to catch my eye. Something about the smooth paper and subtle grey lines encourages you to write. As your notebook grows with thoughts and ideas, the leather cover will darken and patina, feeling more and more personal with time and use. The smaller size fits in your bag without being a nuisance.

Curator's Notes

The name of this mouth-blown sake pitcher comes from its ridged sides, a nod to the "shinogi", or ridge, of the traditional Japanese sword. Facet by facet was hand-cut with a diamond rotary blade for a lively texture that varies across the glass surface, growing finer as it approaches the spout. It also happens to add a nice grip for each pour of sake. A matching cup is available here.

I am a Cara Dish. Ideally I’m used for salad, but I don’t mind being treated to an ice cream sundae every once and a while too.

Curator's Notes

When salads are served on wooden dishes, they look more appetizing. These dishes make the simple act of eating your meals more enjoyable. I personally like to use them for my stews and soups. The curvature of the edges makes it easy to pick up and slurp. I also like the sound that it makes when my spoon or fork comes in contact with the wooden dish. "Cara" is a series of egg-shaped tablewares making the most of the warmth of wood as a material and Japanese thin-wood-curving techniques. The curvatures of the pieces are meant to mimic the egg so as to fit gently within your hands.

The flat expanse of surface on this circular tray showcases Takayoshi's signature brush-stroke textures with minimal distraction. The edges have been raised just enough to provide a proper rim while maintaining a low and elegant profile. From afar, its material is hard to identify, as Narita-san transforms practical stainless steel into an ethereal structure as mysterious as the distant surface of the moon.

Curator's Notes

Each soft groove of this sake container was carved by hand with the aid of a diamond rotary cutter. While running your fingers over the texture, you can almost sense the motion of the blade scooping into the surface to create each facet. Afterwards, the piece is polished on the interior for a smooth shiny surface and buffed on the exterior for a contrasting matte effect. The time intensive process is felt in the texture. The blueish smoke-hued glass catches light and refracts like a precious gem. This container can be used to store tableware, tea or other small household objects.

Curator's Notes

I used to wonder why Japanese teacups were so small until I was served the best sencha tea I’ve ever had in a cup with a capacity of no more than two ounces. Since then, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect tea cup and have found it in the Kaoru porcelain cup. Its smaller size actually makes tea taste better by encouraging you to brew the loose-leaf tea in multiple steeps in a similarly small teapot. The taste is not too bitter and each steep has a unique depth of flavor. Each sip is warm with a small cup and allows one teapot to be shared amongst a few people.

I like this figurine because it’s miniature. I also love the cloud motif for it’s whimsical meaning and the ability of the cloud to be removed. Although the figurine is small, it makes a statement by drawing you in with all its intricate, playful elements.

I am a Snow Etched Small Bowl. I like to think I'm special. You know how they say no two snowflakes are alike? Well, no two snow bowls are alike either!

Curator's Notes

Each little dot is hand etched creating an irregular allover print like snowflakes on glass. We particularly like this signature factory zoomer pattern because there is something nice about such a subtle design detail. Its almost as if the glass is clear but upon closer inspection, the realization that so much work went into hand-etching hundreds of dots sets in, making eating or drinking from a snow etched piece more enjoyable.

Curator's Notes

Though Masanobu Ando is celebrated for his work in functional ceramics, his beginnings in contemporary sculpture continue to influence his oeuvre. This piece is reminiscent of a skyscraper with its jagged pillar and cut-out windows, and casts an impressive shadow when placed in a window or under a spotlight. The starkness of the sculpture exhibits a reverence for clay as it really is - geologic and unrefined. A distinctive hand-painted glaze makes the piece unmistakably Ando-san's creation.

Curator's Notes

Every year we receive a very special chawan glazed with gold from Masanobu Ando. This is the first time we received one in a 'tomobako' wooden box that plays a significant role in the value and protection of the pottery work. It was a joy to unveil the contents and lift out a chawan that is more bulbous in shape and gentler in your hands. Made to fit the contours of cupped palms, this rounded chawan feels familiar and comfortable to hold. Ando-san hand builds all of his pieces to highlight the natural textures of the clay, and with this piece, he’s taken a more subtle approach to keep a smoother surface and an understated elegance. We've learn that drinking with a gold cup can help alleviate symptoms of chronic pain - the celestial flecks of gold that scatter the surfaces have an otherworldly impression, that remind us of the power of the raw materials that form this rare piece by a master potter.

I am a Wooden Pasta Fork. I love being wrapped up in a warm noodle sweater.
Curator's Notes

We love the soft carved form of this pasta fork. The three tines catch and weave thick noodles, trapping their heat in it's wood. Each is beautifully varied; covered all over in small hand carved facets, extending into elongated shapes following the form of the handle. The end of the handle turns up slightly more than on traditional cutlery, charmingly elevating the fork’s profile above a table when it’s resting face down.

Octagonal Petal Dish - Small

I am a Tea Water Kensui. You know when something just doesn't hold water? Well, that's definitely not me. When you're done brewing, pour out the waste so you're left with only the best tasting tea.

Curator's Notes

Masanobu Ando is known not only for his ceramics but also for his mastery in the art of tea ceremony. He created this piece based on the traditional Japanese "kensui", i nto which either hot or cold water is poured after tea has been brewed and the bowl has been rinsed. The loose leaf tea collects onto the lid for easy separation and disposal. Normally an unobtrusive cylinder, kensuis are meant to be hidden from the eyes of guests. This one by Ando-san is worthy of display, with a sculptural shape and painterly glaze. Three small tabs extend from the interior of the vessel to hold the lid, which has an opening for steam to escape and ease of removal.

This mixed metal tea fork is entirely handmade by Mitsuhiro Konishi in his Okinawa based workshop. We love seeing the irregularities in the hand hammered aged steel heads in contrast to the smooth brass handles. A substantial weight is balanced with an intricate attention to detail with small rivets and subtly curved handles. Curator's Notes

When my friend turned me onto using tongs, I never looked back. They are just so maneuverable and versatile! Meat, fish, vegetables, even delicate pieces of tofu are flipped, shifted, and turned so much easier with a pair of tongs than with any other kitchen tool. I love this pair for its smaller size and how it tapers at the end for picking up daintier ingredients. The black resin coating is textured for grip, and protects your pots and pans from being scratched. We prefer these more for cooking and the Stainless Steel Tongs for serving.

Curator's Notes

The rare ceramic artist has the ability to create a work that transcends established structures and fills the space it inhabits with new meaning. This sculptural vessel by ceramicist Masanobu Ando certainly breaks the mold of the common concept of "vase". Its abstract nature gives it a transformative presence. Adding flowers softens its edges and adds rustic warmth. Alone on the wall, it is stark and minimal, like a handle to an invisible door. When placed upon the table, it almost seems to have the ability to walk away on two legs. Even the shadow it casts morphs and shifts, tracing new shapes on the wall as the day passes. With this piece, Ando-san obscures the distinction between fine art and handcrafts, and reminds us of the form that can be held in empty space, and the empty space that can be held in form.
