This pouring vessel is truly something special. Like a droplet of water suspended in flight, the spherical body tapers gently to a spout with a poetry that makes my heart ache. Its beauty doesn’t hinder its function – the base fits wonderfully in the hand with a satisfying weight, and the delicate spout allows you to pour liquids with intention, from soy sauce to salad dressing. But my favorite thing about this vessel is the way it moves. Tip it over lightly with your hand, and the piece comes to life in a pendulous dance, its spout tracing spirals in the air as it rocks and sways, eventually settling back into its center of balance. Mesmerizing!

I like how a bowl of this form and depth lends itself to a material like ceramic but defies expectations in forged stainless steel. The finish is left visually coarse but buffed for a smooth touch. Highlights and irregularities caught on the surface are due to the hammering process and the rates of metal cooling between each firing.

Hatashikki and Mute Studio combine forces to create a colorful series of containers that emanate traditional Japanese craft techniques and modern design. If only a photo could describe how special these teacups and saucers are. Yes, the shape is perfect so that's worth mentioning but its more about the extraordinary matte glaze that Tetsuya Otani has created. Called a teacup due to its classic English teacup shape but the size is quite small so it'd be more appropriate for Japanese or Chinese teas. I like it the best for a single shot of espresso.

These cutting boards are part of the award winning cookware line ‘Ambai’, designed by Makoto Koizumi. They are made from hinoki cypress, a type of wood noted for its antimicrobial properties and pleasant natural fragrance. The wood is soft on knife blades as it has an inherent elasticity. We love that the boards appear thin and delicate yet are incredibly durable, especially with the added cherry wood inserts at the corners that prevent warping. They occupy very little storage space and are also lightweight, making them easy to handle during intensive meal preparations.

I like this particular bowl because it feels more casual and approachable than many other tea bowls or ceremonial chawans. It's body is made from a single piece of sturdy bamboo, so I never hesitate to use it to mix up a morning matcha (or even a matcha latte) with a tea whisk.  While very simple, the bamboo's grain creates a striking pattern at the bottom of the bowl.  It is lightweight, and very easy to clean, making it perfect for every day use.

So long neon dish sponges… I’ve finally found a proper replacement! Since this dishwashing cloth is flexible, the thickness isn’t the predetermined standard sponge so you’ll be able to fully follow the edge of a pot, inner corners of a lid and delicate tableware using your fingertips. It is knitted with durable linen that is rough enough to remove grime from dishes. The sanitary loose weave dries fairly quick and wrings out well.

Curator's Notes

This basket is particularly great for office spaces as it's easy to toss unwanted paper items into the large cutout hole but the small ledge around the rim does a good job of covering the waste just enough to keep it out of sight. It's also perfect for tossing other items into, not necessarily only waste, such as nice hand towels.
Trash containers are often hidden or an after-thought as a product, kept far away from public sight. We like the idea that a frequently neglected household item can also be beautiful and worthy of display.

Curator's Notes

We never knew we wanted a bread tray this shape until we saw it in person and realized it’s the perfect compliment to crispy breads baked in a Pullman Loaf pan. The tray’s hand-carved irregular surface allows bread and other baked goods to cool at the perfect pace without getting soggy, and it looks beautiful to serve off of too! The high edges and lightweight wood make it easy to carry, especially on late summer nights when it gets a little too chilly to keep the party outside.

We’ve collaborated with renowned Kyoto based futon specialists, Takaokaya, for a special edition series of “Ojami” pillows with denim taking center stage. Based on the four-panel shape of traditional Japanese bean bags, the “Ojami” can be used as a floor cushion or throw pillow. A cheerful and charming accent for any room in the home! Since 1919, Takaokaya has been devoted to producing the finest futons and zabutons in the Japanese market. The company is rooted in the tradition of Kyoto based textile crafts and we believe that by blending an American heritage material like denim, with Japanese craftsmanship, we can create a harmonious blend of the two cultures that is also a representation of this unique collaboration.

Curator's Notes

This oak stool is perfect for small spaces and can also be used as a step stool or side table. Especially great in the front entrance as a resting spot for putting on shoes. Handcrafted in the Hokkaido region of Japan, the stool exemplifies the traditional Japanese technique of "fuki-urushi". By repeatedly applying lacquer and then wiping it off, the appearance of a saturated wood grain is achieved. A thoughtful addition of a handle makes carrying a breeze. The stool also has subtle marks of the maker’s carving tools that add to its charm and handcrafted appeal.

Curator's Notes

These are some super luxurious towels! Texturally they’re really nice. A little thicker than typical Japanese towels but just as innovative in their textile technology. The thing that we noticed about these towels is that most of our customers who buy these don't use other towels because they like the texture. Personally we only use the body towel in our towel rotation because we prefer something a little thinner for face and hand towels. If you really want to splurge on towels, these are the ones to go with. Plus having binchotan charcoal odor eliminating towels is an added bonus!

We love how it can add a sense of wonderment to any dinner table. The solid brass trivet appears delicate with a beautiful gold sheen yet is durable because of its crude casting surface finishing. Through oxidization, its color changes over time to eventually produce a beautiful patina. We love how a product like this transforms with age and remains exquisite throughout all its stages.
