Origin

Self taught, Peter Swanson established his own pottery in 1976 working in earthenware. Over the years his method of working has evolved, he now works in reduction fired stoneware and porcelain, specialising in specific varieties of individual Ash Glazes.

Born in 1950, Peter began working in potteries from 1967 in between travelling to various parts of the world and absorbing different cultures.
In 1974 Peter moved to St. Ives, Cornwall helping his family establisha pottery on the Penbeagle Estate.
Peter uses a self built gas fired reduction kiln of some 36 cu.ft. for both domestic and individual pieces.
He built an Anagama kiln in 2004 which has enabled him to explore surface decoration that is not possible in the gas kiln.
From 2013 to 2014, Peter was on the board of the Leach Pottery in St. Ives.
His work is sold at his studio, galleries and exhibitions.

Christiane Perrochon’s fixation with colour has driven her to develop new and rare hues, an exploratory journey she’s been on for over forty years. Along with hand-throwing each of her pieces, the addition of colour grants each and every one of them a unique character.

Christiane Perrochon was born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1942. There she completed her studies at the École des Beaux Arts and the École des Arts Décoratifs, receiving her diploma in ceramics in 1962. After working in private studios and teaching ceramics at the International School of Geneva, she established her own studio as an independent artist in 1971 in Hermance, Geneva. In 1979 she moved to Tuscany where she presently resides with her partner.

Kiho Kang constructs strictly geometric vessels and tableware by coiling and pinching. Slowly building up each piece forces the artist to work more deliberately, giving each piece a special quality and showing the time and craftsmanship that has gone into its making.
Created with the user in mind, Kiho’s work is both fully functional and aesthetic, each piece impactful as part of a group or on its own. Fired at 1280 degrees Celsius.

Pursuing purity, Kiho designs with the aim of form only representing function.  Free of unnecessary adornments each piece allows its user to experience the texture of the clay.
Born in Jin-Hae, South Korea, Kiho completed a BA in ceramic art from Kookmin University in Seoul in 2009 followed by a Masters in artistic ceramic and glass at Koblenz University of Applied Sciences in Mainz, Germany.  Kiho went on to win the World Ceramic Exposition Foundation Award 2008, the Cheongju International Craft Biennale 2009,the Justus Brinckmann Gesellschaft 2013, Richard Bampi Prize 2013, Albert Hauseisen Prize 2013, Modern Ceramic Arts Award of Korea 2009, among others.

Inspired by the everyday, Sue Pryke aims to create her own collection of objects that sit comfortably in the home.  Sue Pryke is a British homeware designer, who started her journey into ceramics at a small pottery in Lincolnshire. After graduating Sue’s first job was a designer at Wedgewood, guided by the design team she was taught to understand the breadth of ceramic form. Sue found the challenge of the precision absorbing and the repetitive nature satisfying.

"I was educated at Kolding Designschool, in 2005, as a ceramic artisan and has my own studio and shop in the center of Copenhagen. This vase demonstrates how Grace Alzamora’s work is informed by ancient pottery. Allusions to the past are enhanced by the vessel’s texture and patterning, which, as well as being totally unique, evoke the passing of time.

Gracia Alzamora is part of the Alzamora and Good family matriarchal trio, living and working in Majorca. She has travelled extensively throughout Europe and the Americas. These experiences have resulted in ceramics which draw on multiple sources of inspiration; from her South American roots, to Greek and Asian ancient pottery.

Her career in ceramics and sculpture began in 1992, when she moved to Boca Grande, an island on the Gulf of Mexico. She was taught by her mother and sister Mariana, who had started a studio there.

Grace mainly hand builds her beautiful and ‘perfectly imperfect’ pieces. They are formed from high fire stoneware and occasionally terracotta. Grace creates her own special glazes with local, natural materials. The final elements of Grace’s practice are burnishing and pit-firing.

Working mainly in porcelain and with an underlying interest and passion for calligraphy and Roman sign writing, Tom creates exquisite minimal forms which are then brought to life what is usually just a single brush stroke.
Tom has experimented with many different tools for mark making, working to exclude any recognisable language and focus on movements, graphical and bodily relationship, universal aspects of writing that are unspecific to any group.

Sophie Cook graduated from Camberwell School of Arts in 1997 with a series of bottles in varying shades of matt turquoise. This was her reaction to the glazes conventionally used in traditional ceramics, which she deemed dull. Sophie now works with a huge variety of tones, which function more than merely as surface decoration, and are integral to Sophie’s designs.
Sophie’s pieces are on display in prominent permanent collections, such as The Manchester City Galleries, the Geffrye Museum, London and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Sophie is often commissioned for pieces and installations, meaning she is represented in residencies all over the world. In 2002, she was awarded the Adrian Sassoon Award of the Kiln at Chelsea Crafts Fair, and from 2009 to 2011 she was included in the touring exhibition ‘European Design Since 1985: Shaping the New Century'.

These vases are part of Lior’s project to cast individually 100 vases over a period of 100 days.
The vases are numbered and start with the same simple cylindrical shape. Each one is created separately, with complete attention from the casting to the shaping to the sanding and the hand application of the glaze and the firings. The long process is evident in the differences in the surface, in the thickness of the porcelain body, the shape of the rim, and the different colours. This is a specific project to highlight casting as a hand crafted technique as opposed to a homogeneous manufacturing process.
Lior Hod graduated from Central St Martins, London, in 2005 after gaining a BA in Ceramic Design. Right from the start Lior was fascinated with the casting process, which is more closely associated with manufacturing. Later he pursued the areas of hand building and experimented with forms and textures.

This Smoke fired Vessel was hand-built by Enriqueta Cepeda, through pinching and coiling methods with the addition of very simple tools. Hand building is "a slow way to work that suits me". Enriqueta’s preference for using her hands causes natural imperfections and allows her to achieve harmony in the irregular, resulting in the unique character of each piece.
Smoking is a primitive technique that gives exciting results. The objects are fired at 1,000 degrees and then burnt in an open fire. The flames of the fire create patterns and give life to the surface. She does not use any glazes or oxides in the smoke fires. Her works echo classical, timeless sculptural forms.

Enriqueta Cepeda is a ceramicist living and working in Stockholm whose designs and making process take inspiration from ancient pottery. Enriqueta draws on the ceramic practices of different ancient cultures and interprets them in her own way, such as the Pueblo Indian technique of burnishing and polishing pots after firing. The Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi is also significant to Enriqueta’s creations, and informs the simplicity and asymmetry that they display.

This unique black vessel is made from black clay from Tokomame, where Tetsuya Ozawa lives and works. Its shape is very striking; with a funnel opening and rounded body. Ozawa applies a traditional Japanese glaze, Chara, and uses ‘kofuki’, a dusting technique, to create his interesting uneven and organic surfaces. The glimpses of the the material underneath are achieved through a technique that is comparable to abstract drawing. Following the firing process, white soil is applied in a thin layer, enhancing the rough texture of the piece.

Ozawa's designs are created in a way that leave them open to interpretation and multiple uses and purposes. This vessel is a sculptural piece full of character.

Tetsuya Ozawa originates from Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, but now lives in Tokomame City, Aichi Prefecture, which has been celebrated for its ceramic production since the Heian Period (794-1185). Ozawa’s decision to be a ceramicist was made early on, and he graduated in 2008 with a degree in Japanese Fine Arts from Nagoya University. He went on to train under Yoshikawa Masamichi. Ozawa’s tableware creations reconcile inspiration taken from modern crafts, tea culture and folk arts.

This striking hand-thrown porcelain vessel has black porcelain slip brushstroke and no glaze, a relatively new technique for Tom Kemp. The  minimal form is a three dimensional piece of art, with Tom's distinctive markings creating a piece that not only tells the story of its making, recording every intricacy of movements made, but also gives the observer endless angles of interest.

Tom Kemp is a ceramicist who creates large porcelain vessels which express his interest and passion for calligraphy and Roman sign writing through mark-making. Tom creates exquisite minimal forms on the wheel which are then brought to life what is usually just a single brush stroke with a square shaped brush. The vessels are the surfaces for his brushstrokes which reveal a huge amount of information of the way he moves during the extremely quick painting process.

Hannah Tounsend studied Ceramics and Glass at De Montfort University for a BA Hons, before going on to achieve Distinction in her MA of Fine Art. She combines ceramics and printmaking to create collections of sensitively realised vessel forms and subtly layered monoprints that explore the layered landscapes and weatherworn surfaces of the British coastline.

Sophie Cook graduated from Camberwell School of Arts in 1997 with a series of bottles in varying shades of matt turquoise. This was her reaction to the glazes conventionally used in traditional ceramics, which she deemed dull. Sophie now works with a huge variety of tones, which function more than merely as surface decoration, and are integral to Sophie’s designs.
Sophie’s pieces are on display in prominent permanent collections, such as The Manchester City Galleries, the Geffrye Museum, London and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Sophie is often commissioned for pieces and installations, meaning she is represented in residencies all over the world. In 2002, she was awarded the Adrian Sassoon Award of the Kiln at Chelsea Crafts Fair, and from 2009 to 2011 she was included in the touring exhibition ‘European Design Since 1985: Shaping the New Century'.

Nathalie Lahdenmäki ceramics are all handmade from the mixing of the clay bodies to the glaze. Nathalie studied University of Art and Design Helsinki (UIAH). She is both a Finnish and French national and works as a researcher and teacher.
