Hinterland's Oxbow Mirror combines a perfect arc, mystic mirror effects, and a simple platform for display or function. The oxbow form is derived from the cutoff section of an old meandering river when the water finds an easier pathway through a valley. Leaving a horseshoe or oxbow lake alongside a flowing river. Like a leftover reminder of where the waterway once traveled.

Hinterland's first Lounge chair offering, the Shepherd's Chair is the culmination of years of design and prototyping. Inspired by the close relationship between a traditional herders tools, animals and the land. The curve of the staff. The softness of the wool. And the wood of the forest. It is made of solid bent white ash or black walnut and upholstered in either a natural sheepskin or leather sling seat and back rest. The three perfect arcs of the rounded wood frame hold the natural materials in place and create an elegant chair to recline in.
Available in two styles: natural or dyed black sheepskin with Canadian white ash and leather with American black walnut.

Mary's side table, crafted in solid hardwood with a marble top, is substantial yet delicate, sculptural yet highly functional. It was inspired by a visit to the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco. Matthew Hilton was moved by the contrast of the oppressive weight of the concrete structure and the release of the swooping, expansive space within. Mary's side table captures this paradox of weight and weightlessness.

PLANEfurniture emerges out of the idea that form should inspire; and these forms should function effortlessly. How does one suspend a body in air? Minimalism with character. Although there is rigor and formalism in the planning of PLANEfurniture, the finished pieces are casual, pleasing, and human-friendly. How we sit and how we see design is at the root of this collection. Sophistication and refinement do not preclude modesty and abbreviation. There is a deep pleasure that can be derived from simplicity. There can be a truly luxurious feeling aroused by humble handmade objects. There is a timeless dimension to PLANEfurniture. It attempts to echo the pioneering works of the modernist, avant-garde designers; yet it is contemporary, as all good ideas are. The furniture and objects from PLANEfurniture, because of their neutral forms and minimal physical and psychological space they occupy, coexist seamlessly with other good designs - even objects from an entirely different visual vocabulary, country of origin, or era.
PLANEfurniture is an idea whose time has come: the concept is to create unfussy, beautiful furniture that makes you think, holds your body, eases your mind, and sits well within your budget. Four series - the PLANKseries, WEDGEseries, BLOCKseries, and RODseries - round out the indoor/outdoor roster of planar wood and steel rod designs. The results are pieces that can populate any domestic interior and rekindle the pleasure of simplicity. PLANEfurniture is in the permanent collections of SFMOMA, The Palm Springs Museum, and the Univesity of California, Santa Barbara (ADC, Architecture and Design Collection, Gebhard Archives).

The PLANKseries is the most uncompromising. Four flat planes are invisibly joined to create a chair that is elemental as a child's drawing. Each plane is set at an angle to its neighbor to form a bold X in profile and the illusion of a ledge jutting from a tilted plank at the front. It is simultaneously a geometric sculpture that stands apart, and a surprisingly comfortable place to sit. (You are reminded that a kimono is assembled from a few rectangles of fabric that adjust to the contours of the user). Stools and side tables complement the chairs.

Box Sofa

Cast-off cedar logs are given second life as a crystalline form. The natural beauty of reclaimed wood is harnessed in this side table and sculpture piece where nature informs design. Each piece is hand-shaped and faceted based on the different characteristics of the log used, and variations in wood grain. Top surface and finish further ensure that no two are alike. Also suitable for outdoor use where its exposure to the elements will create a natural, beautiful silver finish.

It shares its design language with Elliot Table and Chair. The frame is made from a series of carved wood components, revealing a stunning composition of grain patterns. Upholstery softens the headboard.

Carlton Bed

This single bay of Amuneal's Loft Shelving is wall-mounted to support five shelves, using custom machined brass fittings on bent steel posts. Amuneal’s proprietary machined hardware clamps onto the posts so that the shelves can be easily adjusted at any time. The shelves are milled in house from solid white oak to a thickness of 1.5” before being hand-finished using the traditional ShouSugiBan process of burning the wood. Once completed, the shelves are sealed with a protective coating that keeps that burnt finish from rubbing off. The combination of blackened steel posts, machined and patinated brass hardware and the charred oak shelves make this a stunning and sculptural shelving option for any space. These shelves are fabricated in Amuneal's Philadelphia-based furniture studio and can be customized with different metal and wood finishes as well as different shelf widths and configurations.
