In an ongoing attempt to unite the sublime with the absolutely necessary, Poul Kjaerholm designed the PK80 Daybed. The result is one of Kjaerholm's most sophisticated and iconic designs with a striking beauty. The daybed is a clear illustration of Poul Kjaerholm's method of refining historical models and distilling them down to the essence and demonstrating his superior ability to balance construction and choice of materials. The inspiration for the daybed came from Bauhaus, which in turn, were inspired by ancient Roman couches. The purchase of the PK80 for the galleries of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, in 2004, recognizes the daybed's natural place in furniture history.

The PK25 Lounge Chairwas designed by Poul Kjrholm in 1951, for his final graduation project at the School of Applied Arts in Copenhagen. The PK25 Lounge Chair, also known as the"Element" chair, is a fine example of the young Kjrholm"s eagerness to work with common, industrial materials. Kjrholm was determined to reduce the chair to a single piece of each material, resulting in the overarching hallmark of the chair: The continuous and rather complex steel frame that is bent in a single piece without joints and connections. There is a braided rope wrapped around the frame for a tight but flexible seat and backrest, which has been turned for relaxation. This unique and stylish chair is complementary to any modern interior and is beautiful on its own, or in a group of numerous PK25 lounge chairs

Finnish-American Eero Saarinen (1910"1961) was famous for varying his style according to the demands of the project. His father taught at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where Eero took classes and formed relationships with fellow student Florence Knoll. Saarinen studied sculpture at the Acadmie de la Grande Chaumire in Paris, France, and later at the Yale School of Architecture, completing his studies in 1934. He joined the US Military, where he was assigned to draw illustrations for bomb disassembly manuals and to provide designs for the Situation Room in the White House. He founded his own office in 1950, after his father"s death. His first success, the"Tulip Chair" was produced by the Knoll company, beginning a long relationship between Knoll and Saarinen. While still working for his father, he won the design competition for the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, in St. Louis, aka the Gateway Arch.

The Executive Armchair with Casters is supported by a five-point, pneumatic height-adjustable swiveling base with twin-wheel casters for use on carpet. The Executive was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane. The feel of this classic seat, however, remains unchanged, with a molded shell that flexes slightly with the sitter and a contoured plywood seat. Unlike Saarinen's furniture, which was consistently sculptural in form, these fluid lines didn't appear in his architecture until the 1950s. When looking at the dome-shaped glass wall of the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, it's not a big leap to see the same shape in the back of his Executive Chair.

Eero Saarinen, the son of influential Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen and his second wife, Louise, was born on his father"s 37th birthday, August 20, 1910. They emigrated to the United States of America in 1923, when Eero was thirteen.He grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where his father was a teacher at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and he took courses in sculpture and furniture design there.
Beginning in September 1929, he studied sculpture at the Acadmie de la Grande Chaumire in Paris, France. He then went on to study at the Yale School of Architecture, completing his studies in 1934. Subsequently, he toured Europe and North Africa for a year and returned for a year to his native Finland, after which he returned to Cranbrook to work for his father and teach at the academy. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1940. Saarinen was recruited by Donal McLaughlin, an architectural school friend from his Yale days, to join the military service in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Saarinen was assigned to draw illustrations for bomb disassembly manuals and to provide designs for the Situation Room in the White House. Saarinen worked full-time for the OSS until 1944. After his father"s death in 1950, Saarinen founded his own architect"s office,"Eero Saarinen and Associates". Eero Saarinen died of a brain tumor in 1961 at the age of 51.

The Classic Panton chair is Verner Panton's original chair, which he designed for Vitra in 1967. Panton designed the Classic Chair with a hard foam plastic ( glass-reinforced plastic - GRP) shell that features vibrant colors in a high-gloss lacquered paint. Since it is a high-design piece, Classic PantonChairis only suitable for indoor use. The "classic" version is a limited production high-gloss material.

Verner Panton, born in Gamtofte, Denmark, studied at Odense Technical College before enrolling at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen as an architecture student. He worked from 1950-1952 in the architectural firm of Arne Jacobsen and founded an independent studio for architecture and design in 1955. He first attracted wider attention with the geometric forms of his furniture designs for the firm Plus-linje. In the following years Panton created numerous designs for seating furniture and lighting.
Verner Panton's passion for bright colours and geometric patterns manifested itself in an extensive range of textile designs. By fusing the elements of a room - floor, walls, ceiling, furnishings, lighting, textiles and wall panels made of enamel or plastic - into a unified gesamtkunstwerk, Panton's interior installations have attained legendary status. The most famous examples are the 'Visiona' ship installations for the Cologne Furniture Fair (1968 and 1970), the Spiegel publishing headquarters in Hamburg (1969) and the Varna restaurant in Aarhus (1970).
Panton's collaboration with Vitra began in the early 1960s, when they jointly developed what became his best-known design, the Panton Chair, which was introduced in 1967. This was also the first independently developed product by Vitra.
Verner Panton died in 1998 in Copenhagen. Vitra's re-edition of designs by Panton, as well as the retrospective of his work mounted by the Vitra Design Museum in 2000, bear witness to the special relationship between Vitra and Verner Panton.

Hans Jrgensen Wegner, (April 2, 1914 - January 26, 2007), was a world renowned Danish furniture designer. His high quality and thoughtful work, along with a concerted effort from several of his manufacturers, contributed to the international popularity of mid-century Danish design. His style is often described as Organic Functionality, a modernist school with emphasis on functionality. This school of thought arose primarily in Scandinavian countries with contributions by Poul Henningsen, Alvar Aalto, and Arne Jacobsen. In his lifetime he designed over 500 different chairs, over 100 of which were put into mass production and many of which have become recognizable design icons.
Wegner worked for some time for Arne Jacobsen, a successful Danish designer. Wegner was in charge of the furniture in the Aarhus Municipal Hall, which Jacobsen designed. After some years under Jacobsen, Wegner started his own company. Along with fellow architect Brge Mogensen, he designed furniture for FDB (a Danish chain of grocery stores), spearheaded by Erik Kold" who founded an organization of Danish furniture makers that launched Danish design abroad.
In his later years Wegner became more attached to PP Mbler (which produces many of pieces originally designed for Johannes Hansen) and for whom he designed several chairs late in his life. He remained active throughout his life. An example of his later work is the"Hoop Chair", originally designed in 1965 with a steel tube base and finally put into production made entirely in wood in 1985 (for PP Mbler). Wegner retired from public life only in the last decade of his life.

Le Corbusier was born as Charles-douard Jeanneret-Gris (1887-1914) in La Chaux-de-Fonds, a small city in Neuchtel canton in north-western Switzerland, in the Jura mountains, just 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) across the border from France.
He began experimenting with furniture design in 1928 after inviting the architect, Charlotte Perriand, to join his studio. His cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, also collaborated on many of the designs. Before the arrival of Perriand, Le Corbusier relied on ready-made furniture to furnish his projects, such as the simple pieces manufactured by Thonet, the company that manufactured his designs in the 1930s.
In 1928, Le Corbusier and Perriand began to put the expectations for furniture Le Corbusier outlined in his 1925 book L"Art Dcoratif d"aujourd"hui into practice. In the book he defined three different furniture types: type-needs, type-furniture, and human-limb objects. He defined human-limb objects as:"Extensions of our limbs and adapted to human functions that are type-needs and type-functions, therefore type-objects and type-furniture. The human-limb object is a docile servant. A good servant is discreet and self-effacing in order to leave his master free. Certainly, works of art are tools, beautiful tools. And long live the good taste manifested by choice, subtlety, proportion, and harmony".
The first results of the collaboration were three chrome-plated tubular steel chairs designed for two of his projects, The Maison la Roche in Paris and a pavilion for Barbara and Henry Church. The line of furniture was expanded for Le Corbusier"s 1929 Salon d"Automne installation,"Equipment for the Home".

The Le Corbusier group referred to their LC2 and LC3 Collections (1928) as"cushion baskets," which they designed as a modernist response to the traditional club chair. These pieces reverse the standard structures of sofas and chairs by having frames that are externalized. Widely considered one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, Le Corbusier (born Charles-douard Jeanneret-Gris) is credited with changing the face of urban architecture, bringing it into the technological age. Connecting architecture with revolution, his legacy demonstrates a strong, if utopian, sense of purpose to meet the needs of a democratic society dominated by the machine. "Modern life demands, and is waiting for, a new kind of plan, both for the house and the city," he said in 1923.
Born in Switzerland, Le Corbusier was encouraged by a teacher to take up architecture. He built his first house at the age of 18 for a member of his school"s teaching staff. In 1908, he went to Paris and began to practice with Auguste Perret, an architect known for his pioneering use of concrete and reinforced steel. Moving to Berlin, Le Corbusier worked with Peter Behrens, who taught him about industrial processes and machine design. In 1917, he returned to Paris, where he met post-Cubist Amde Ozenfant and developed Purism, a new concept of painting. In 1920, still in Paris, he adopted the pseudonym Le Corbusier.
Paradoxically, Le Corbusier combined a passion for classical Greek architecture and an attraction to the modern machine. He published his ideas in a book entitledVers une Architecture, in which he refers to the house as a "machine for living," an industrial product that should include functional furniture or "equipment de l"habitation." In this spirit, Le Corbusier co-designed a system of furniture with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand. The tubular steel furniture" including the famous LC4 Chaise Longue and LC2 and LC3 seating collections" projected a new rationalist aesthetic that came to epitomize the International Style. Corbusier was both credited with and criticized for his reinvention of the modern urban skyline" notably, the buildings he pioneered in Paris" banlieues, which were considered efficient but austere.
Though Le Corbusier"s illustrious career came to an abrupt end in 1965 when he drowned while swimming in the Mediterranean Sea off Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in France, his influence is undisputed.

Born to a baker, and orphaned at age twelve, Florence Schust grew up Saginaw, Michigan. Schust demonstrated an early interest in architecture and was enrolled at the Kingswood School for Girls, adjacent to the Cranbrook Academy of Art.
While at Kingswood, Florence befriended Eilel Saarinen, whom she would later study under at Cranbrook. Warmly embraced by the Saarinen family, Florence seeded in Michigan the foundations of her incredible design education and pioneering career. Florence went on to study under some of the greatest 20th century architects, including Gropius, Breuer, and Mies. In 1941 Florence moved to New York where she met Hans Knoll who was establishing his furniture company. With Florence"s design skills and Hans" business acumen and salesmanship, the pair, who married in 1946, grew the nascent company into an international arbiter of style and design. In creating the revolutionary Knoll Planning Unit, Florence Knoll defined the standard for the modern corporate interiors of post-war America.
After the tragic death of Hans Knoll in 1955, Florence Knoll led the company as president through uncertain times. In 1960 she resigned the presidency to focus on directing design and development and, in 1965 after pioneering an industry and defining the landscape and aesthetic of the corporate office, Florence Knoll Bassett (she remarried in 1957) retired from the company. Her contributions to Knoll, and to the rise of modernism in America, are immeasurable.

The three-legged Ant Chair (1951) sold in the millions and is considered a classic today. It consists of two simple elements: tubular steel legs and a springy seat and back formed out of a continuous piece of plywood in a range of vivid colors.
Jacobsen began training as a mason before studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he won a silver medal for a chair that was then exhibited at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. Influenced by Le Corbusier, Gunnar Asplund and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Jacobsen embraced a functionalist approach from the outset. He was among the first to introduce modernist ideas to Denmark and create industrial furniture that built on the country"s craft-based design heritage.
First among Jacobsen"s important architectural commissions was the Bellavista housing project in Copenhagen (1930-1934). His best-known and most fully integrated works are the SAS Air Terminal and the Royal Hotel Copenhagen, for which Jacobsen designed every detail, from sculptural furnishings such as his elegant Swan and Egg Chairs (1957-1958) to textiles, lighting, ashtrays and cutlery.
During the 1960s, Jacobsen"s most important work was a unified architectural and interior design scheme for St. Catherine"s College, Oxford, which, like his earlier work for the Royal Hotel, involved the design of site-specific furniture. Jacobsen"s work remains appealing and fresh today, combining free-form sculptural shapes with the traditional attributes of Scandinavian design, material and structural integrity.

Florence Knoll Bassett (born May 24, 1917) is an American architect and furniture designer who studied under Mies van der Rohe and Eliel Saarinen. She was born in Saginaw, Michigan as Florence Schust and is known in familiar circles simply as"Shu".
She graduated from the Kingswood School before studying at the Cranbrook Academy of Art (both institutions are located on the same campus in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan). Knoll also received a bachelor"s degree in architecture from Armour Institute (now Illinois Institute of Technology) in 1941 and briefly worked with leaders of the Bauhaus movement, including Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, and the American modernist, Wallace K. Harrison.
In 1938, Hans Knoll founded his furniture company by that name in New York. In 1943, Florence Schust convinced Hans she could help bring in business to his company even in America"s wartime economy by expanding into interior design by working with architects. With her architectural background and design flair, she succeeded. They married in 1946, she became a full business partner and together they founded Knoll Associates. A new furniture factory was established in Pennsylvania and dealers in Knoll"s furniture were carefully added over the next several years.
Florence Knoll felt architects should contribute their design ability to furniture as well. Some of these furniture designs would become design icons of the 20th century and have remained in the Knoll line for decades due to their timeless design. When Hans Knoll died in a car accident in 1955, Florence Knoll took over operation of the company. Florence Knoll herself designed chairs, sofas, tables and casegoods during the 1950s, many of which remain in the Knoll line to this day. In 1958 she married Harry Hood Bassett.
Her American interpretation of minimalist, rationalist design theories is clearly evident in Knoll"s storage pieces. She mixed woods and metals to great effect and added laminates as they became popular. Dressers and desks are all square in design but never lack for quality. Hanging cabinets have glass shelves, sliding doors and drop down fronts that can be used as bars.
Knoll retired as Knoll president in 1960, but remained with the company as the director of design until 1965 when she retired completely.

He had a particular interest in different construction materials; especially steel which he considered a natural material with the same artistic fineness as other natural materials. Poul Kjaerholm was employed at Fritz Hansen for about a year, where he designed a number of noteworthy chair prototypes. In 1955 Poul Kjaerholm initiated his collaboration with manufacturer Ejvind Kold Christensen, which lasted until Poul Kjaerholm"s death in 1980. In 1982, Fritz Hansen took over the production and sales of" The Kjaerholm Collection", developed from 1951 to 1967, designs, which are logical to the minute detail with an aura of exclusivity. German-American Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886 - 1969) commonly known as Mies, is widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture, alongside Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright. He sought to establish a new architectural style that could represent modern times just as Classical and Gothic did for their own eras. His buildings made use of modern materials and he strived towards a minimal framework of structural order balanced against the implied freedom of free-flowing open space. He is often associated with the aphorisms "less is more" and "God is in the details". Mies designed pieces that have become popular classics, such as the Barcelona chair and table, the Brno chair, and the Tugendhat chair. His furniture is known for fine craftsmanship, a mix of traditional luxurious fabrics, like leather, combined with modern chrome frames, and a distinct separation of the supporting structure and the supported surfaces, often employing cantilevers to enhance the feeling of lightness created by delicate structural frames. Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) is considered to be one of the most important Scandinavian architects and designers in post-war time. He is the legendary creator of several 20th Century furniture icons, including e.g. The "Egg" chair, The "Swan" chair and the "Ant" and "Seven series" chairs. Arne Jacobsen was one of the very early modernists in Danish architecture. He was trained in the neoclassic school of the Academy of Art in Copenhagen in the 1920s but was early open to the international modern movement. His most important commission was the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen from 1958, for which also many of the mentioned furniture icons were designed. Jacobsen designed not only the building but also the interior, right down to the smallest details. Arne Jacobsen developed his own signature style and worked independently from 1930 when he opened his own design office. He is the designer behind many modern classics ranging from furniture and lighting to textiles and cutlery.

Borge Mogensen was born in Aalborg, Denmark. He started as a cabinetmaker in 1934, and studied furniture design at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen from 1936"38. From 1938-43 he worked at various design studios in Copenhagen, including with Kaare Klint. In 1959 he left FDB"s furniture design studio to found his own design studio. His work has been featured in one-man exhibitions in Zurich, London, New York, Stockholm, Paris and Copenhagen. His furniture, strongly representative of his training as a traditional craftsman, was greatly appreciated by a public who had not yet become interested in modernism and the changes its influence had created on furniture and the decorative arts. He designed a sofa in 1945 with leather ties which allowed the sides to be dropped down. A 1949 chair, claimed by critics to be"a model for future chairs," used a curved, slightly sloping backrest, cut out along the spine in an organic dewdrop shape. He designed a set of simple, sturdy and modest furniture for a seaside cottage in 1959, a very traditional oak table and chair set in 1960 and a set in pine to furnish a"husband"s study" in 1962.

Hoffmann was born in Brtnice, Moravia (now part of the Czech Republic). He studied at the Higher State Crafts School in Brno (Brnn) beginning in 1887 and then worked with the local military planning authority in Wrzburg.
He designed installation spaces for Secession exhibitions and a house for Moser which was built from 1901-1903. However, he soon left the Secession in 1905 along with other stylist artists due to conflicts with realist naturalists over differences in artistic vision and disagreement over the premise of Gesamtkunstwerk.3 With the banker Fritz Wrndorfer and the artist Koloman Moser he established the Wiener Werksttte, which was to last until 1932. He designed many products for the Wiener Werksttte of which designer chairs, most notably"Sitzmaschine" Chair, a lamp, and sets of glasses have reached the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, and a tea service has reached the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Hoffmann"s style eventually became more sober and abstract and it was limited increasingly to functional structures and domestic products. In 1906, Hoffmann built his first great work on the outskirts of Vienna, the Sanatorium Purkersdorf . Compared to the Moser House, with its rusticated vernacular roof, this was a great advancement towards abstraction and a move away from traditional Arts and Crafts and historicism. This project served as a major precedent and inspiration for the modern architecture that would develop in the first half of the 20th century, for instance the early work of Le Corbusier. It had a clarity, simplicity, and logic that foretold of a Neue Sachlichkeit.
Some of Hoffmann"s domestic designs can still be found in production today, such as the Rundes Modell cutlery set that is manufactured by Alessi. Originally produced in silver the range is now produced in high quality stainless steel. Another example of Hoffmann"s strict geometrical lines and the quadratic theme is the iconic Kubus Armchair. Designed in 1910, it was presented at the International Exhibition held in Buenos Aires on the centennial of Argentinean Independence known as May Revolution. Hoffmann"s constant use of squares and cubes earned him the nickname Quadratl-Hoffmann ("Square Hoffmann").

Eero Saarinen, the son of influential Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen and his second wife, Louise, was born on his father" s 37th birthday, August 20, 1910. They emigrated to the United States of America in 1923, when Eero was thirteen.He grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where his father was a teacher at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and he took courses in sculpture and furniture design there.
Beginning in September 1929, he studied sculpture at the Acadmie de la Grande Chaumire in Paris, France. He then went on to study at the Yale School of Architecture, completing his studies in 1934. Subsequently, he toured Europe and North Africa for a year and returned for a year to his native Finland, after which he returned to Cranbrook to work for his father and teach at the academy. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1940. Saarinen was recruited by Donal McLaughlin, an architectural school friend from his Yale days, to join the military service in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Saarinen was assigned to draw illustrations for bomb disassembly manuals and to provide designs for the Situation Room in the White House. Saarinen worked full-time for the OSS until 1944. After his fathe r"s death in 1950, Saarinen founded his own architect" s office,"Eero Saarinen and Associates". Eero Saarinen died of a brain tumor in 1961 at the age of 51.

Born to a baker, and orphaned at age twelve, Florence Schust grew up Saginaw, Michigan. Schust demonstrated an early interest in architecture and was enrolled at the Kingswood School for Girls, adjacent to the Cranbrook Academy of Art.
While at Kingswood, Florence befriended Eilel Saarinen, whom she would later study under at Cranbrook. Warmly embraced by the Saarinen family, Florence seeded in Michigan the foundations of her incredible design education and pioneering career. Florence went on to study under some of the greatest 20th century architects, including Gropius, Breuer, and Mies. In 1941 Florence moved to New York where she met Hans Knoll who was establishing his furniture company. With Florence"s design skills and Hans" business acumen and salesmanship, the pair, who married in 1946, grew the nascent company into an international arbiter of style and design. In creating the revolutionary Knoll Planning Unit, Florence Knoll defined the standard for the modern corporate interiors of post-war America.
After the tragic death of Hans Knoll in 1955, Florence Knoll led the company as president through uncertain times. In 1960 she resigned the presidency to focus on directing design and development and, in 1965 after pioneering an industry and defining the landscape and aesthetic of the corporate office, Florence Knoll Bassett (she remarried in 1957) retired from the company. Her contributions to Knoll, and to the rise of modernism in America, are immeasurable.

A pioneer both in molded plywood and prefab housing, Norman Cherner studied and taught at the Columbia University Fine Arts Department and was an instructor at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from 1947 to 1949. Here he also explored the Bauhaus movement, embarking on a lifetime exploration of multidisciplinary design, from furniture, shelving, glassware, lighting and even toys to his pioneering work in low-cost prefabricated housing. Early in his career, Cherner envisioned houses as a total design concept and designed affordable furniture specifically for these low-cost modular dwellings. He wrote about his theories in Make Your Own Modern Furniture (1953), How to Build Children"s Toys and Furniture (1954), Fabricating Houses from Component Parts (1958) and How to Build a House for Less than $6,000 (1960). One of his first prefabricated houses was designed, produced and assembled in 1957 by the U.S. Department of Housing. After being exhibited in Vienna, it was shipped back to Connecticut and uncrated to become his first home and studio. Yet Cherner is best known for the molded plywood seating line he created for Plycraft, a manufacturing company in Lawrence, Massachusetts. After telling Cherner that his design for what is now known as the Cherner Chair (1958) had been scrapped, Plycraft"s owner continued to produce it, claiming himself as the designer. Soon after, the chair"s popularity was heightened when it appeared in Norman Rockwell"s 1961 painting"The Artist at Work" on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. Cherner sued the company, and Plycraft agreed to pay Cherner royalties, yet the whole seating line was out of production by the early 1970s. For almost 20 years, Cherner"s seating was rarely seen outside of galleries, museums and the living rooms of a few lucky collectors. This all changed in 1999 when Cherner"s sons Benjamin and Thomas formed the Cherner Chair Company to revive the designs and produce them as their father originally intended. The repeated success of the chairs inspired Benjamin, an architect, and designer in his own right, to create a coordinating table, the Cherner Table (2004).

American architect and interior designer Warren Platner was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1919. Platner attended Cornell University, graduating with a degree in architecture in 1941. Shortly after, he began working with legendary architects Raymond Loewy and I.M. Pei from 1945 to 1950, and with Eero Saarinen from 1960 to 1965. During this time he was part of the design process of many historically important projects including the Dulles International Airport, in Washington, D.C., the Repertory Theater at Lincoln Center, and several dormitories for Yale University. Platner joined Kevin Roche"s firm as the head of interior design, becoming more involved with interior and industrial design, as he believed that the essence and character of a building"s design should come from within.
In 1967, having gained a wealth of expertise and knowledge from working for architect-design luminaries, Platner decided to open his own firm, Platner Associates. Not limiting itself to architecture, it also experimented in furniture design, lighting, textiles, and interiors. From the late 1960s onwards, he exhibited widely and worked on a variety of interior design and architecture projects, including the interior design of the Ford Foundation headquarters (1967) in New York, the Georg Jensen Design Center (1968) also in New York, the interior to the American Restaurant in Kansas (1974), the interiors for Water Tower Place (1976) in Chicago, and the Windows on the World Restaurant (1976) atop the World Trade Center in New York.
In the 1960s, as the modernist movement became more expressive, Platner focused on a quieter aesthetic, wishing to create more graceful structures. In 1966 Platner, in collaboration with Knoll , unveiled the Platner Collection"a series of sleek modern chairs, ottomans and tables that rest on an intricately sculpted base of cylindrical steel rods replicating a moir pattern. Requiring over 1,000 welds for one piece alone, the complex design is a close marriage of architecture and industrial design. Though Platner designed other pieces, the Platner Collection was his most renowned collection that ultimately made a name for himself in furniture design.

Stefan Borselius
Stefan Broselius was born in 1974 in Malm. After finishing a three year apprentice as a cabinet maker, he started studying furniture design for two years at Stenebyskolan and than, Broselius worked as a restorer. In 2002, he received his Masters Degree of Fine Art at the School of Arts, Craft and Design in Stockholm; shortly after that, he joined the Design-ensemble of the Swedish manufacturer Bl Station. There, Stefan Broselius is seen as a thinker and listener who firstly takes advantages and disadvantages into consideration and then chooses his words as carefully as the expression of his design.
Together with Fredrik Mattson, Broselius created for Bl Station very successful design furniture, like the lounge arm chair Snooze, the table series Level and the stackable chair Sting which was awarded with the Red Dot Design Award and in addition it received five other design awards.
However, Stefan Broselius convinces due to his talent not also as a team member. When creating the extraordinary arm chair Peekaboo for Bl Station, it became obvious that Broselius also has his own design style. His creations can be interpreted as the attempt to harmonize the incompatible contradiction of tradition and modernity. Broselius himself says about his work: I want to find new forms and new functions for traditional furniture and new furniture for traditional people in a new age.

The three-legged Ant Chair (1951) sold in the millions and is considered a classic today. It consists of two simple elements: tubular steel legs and a springy seat and back formed out of a continuous piece of plywood in a range of vivid colors.
Jacobsen began training as a mason before studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he won a silver medal for a chair that was then exhibited at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. Influenced by Le Corbusier, Gunnar Asplund and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Jacobsen embraced a functionalist approach from the outset. He was among the first to introduce modernist ideas to Denmark and create industrial furniture that built on the country"s craft-based design heritage.
First among Jacobsen"s important architectural commissions was the Bellavista housing project in Copenhagen (1930-1934). His best-known and most fully integrated works are the SAS Air Terminal and the Royal Hotel Copenhagen, for which Jacobsen designed every detail, from sculptural furnishings such as his elegant Swan and Egg Chairs (1957-1958) to textiles, lighting, ashtrays and cutlery.
During the 1960s, Jacobsen"s most important work was a unified architectural and interior design scheme for St. Catherine"s College, Oxford, which, like his earlier work for the Royal Hotel, involved the design of site-specific furniture. Jacobsen"s work remains appealing and fresh today, combining free-form sculptural shapes with the traditional attributes of Scandinavian design, material and structural integrity.
