Created in 1957, this magnificent Saarinen Tulip Table envelopes the thought and theory behind one of the 20th century's great industrial designers. The Saarinen Table has become one of the most recognizable furniture pieces of the modern classic era. Constructed of cast aluminum, the Saarinen table flows from top to bottom and from side to side in a fluid exchange of lines. Saarinen used a variety of bases and tops for various interiors during his career. The Saarinen table shown here is a favorite as it can be used in a variety of spaces, but is most commonly used as a dining table.
Eero Saarinen’s design of the General Motors Technology Center in 1948 exhibited his own style, but also the influence of Mies van der Rohe.  The extensive use of glass and steel was still extremely modern for architecture.  Saarinen was responsible for not only the architecture but the interiors as well.  Giving this master the ability to coordinate the lighting, furniture, urban design and architecture allowed for a harmonious design that is now considered a masterpiece of modernism similar to the Tulip Table.

Gerald Summers was one of the earliest producers of functional furniture. In 1929 he formed "Makers of Simple Furniture Ltd" with the purpose of producing practical furniture. In the early 1930s, modern style bentwood furniture began to surface.  Designers such as Alvar Aalto, Gerald Summers, and Charles Eames were inspired by an alternative to the steel frame furniture of that period.
At first glance, one can mistake this piece for a design by Alvar Aalto, though upon further inspection a major difference in construction can be recognized. Unlike pieces by Aalto, this Summers lounge chair is composed of one, solitary sheet of bent plywood. This lounge chair has been described as "organic" and "biomorphic" due to its swept-back, continuous shape. Only 120 of the Summers Bent Plywood Chairs were produced at Makers of Simple Furniture, Ltd, the original factory. In 1939 Summers' factory was forced to close due to government restriction on the import of much of the materials he used.  Gerald Summers never returned to furniture design.

In 1899 at the Art and Crafts exhibition in London, Charles Rennie Mackintosh showed the Argyle Carver Armchair. It was also exhibited at the Vienna Secession in 1900 and was acquired by Koloman Moser. In both of these cases a circular pewter plaque designed by Mackintosh's wife, Margaret, was inserted in the oval back rail. This version is without an inserted panel as is in the Glasgow School of Art Collection. This armchair is constructed of ashwood with a fabric or leather upholstered seat cushion.
Beyond Mackintosh's influence in the area of furniture, he also had a large influence on architecture, textiles, metalwork, and interior design. Much like the American Frank Lloyd Wright, Mackintosh's designs went beyond the architecture of a building and included specific details and furnishings of the building. Though many of his designs gained popularity around the turn of the 20th century, it should be recognized that much of the designer's acclaim came after his death in 1928.

This charming floor lamp was designed by Donald Deskey in 1927 in the United States.
Donald Deskey is considered to be one of the great American pioneers of industrial design.  His primary focus during his career was on furniture and textiles.  Much of his design work was completed in the 1930s and 1940s. During that time he created the interior design for Radio City Music Hall.

Michael Thonet's company designed the No. 811 Bentwood Chair in the 1920s. Sometimes also called the "Prague chair" the No. 811 bentwood chair is often attributed to Josef Hoffmann, but is more likely the design of Josef Frank. The A811 bentwood chair was first introduced as the A64F and had a different version of front legs than later versions.  The No. 811 bentwood chair is also one of the first versions of bentwood chairs to be offered in a variety of colored finishes that were not previously offered.  The No. 811 bentwood chair was one of the company's most popular 20th-century designs and is still widely used by designers worldwide.
In the 1840s Michael Thonet began experimenting with bentwood furniture made by bending wood that had been steamed into a soft and pliable state. Over the next 20 years, Michael Thonet and his sons developed the processes and machines that would allow them to build bentwood furniture in unprecedented quantities. It was in this time period that he developed what has become thought of as the "traditional" Michael Thonet designed bentwood chair: one featuring a backrest and back legs made from a single piece, a rounded cane or laminated seat, and front legs. In his effort to reduce the number of pieces used in building bentwood chairs, he had to connect the main elements that existed on different planes.  This could only be achieved by bending wood.  Michael Thonet's further experimentation with bending wood yielded amazing results.  By the 1850s, Michael Thonet's bentwood styles had become mainstream, and he was on his way to creating a catalog of bentwood chairs yet to be rivaled.
The output of Michael Thonet's factories was vast, due in part to his idea of designing separate pieces that would be combined to make a large number of models. Michael Thonet stands out as a designer and pioneer both in mass production and in design, as he artistically explored the new forms and unique qualities of his newly invented technique.  Remarkably few changes have been necessary over the last 150 years. The factory still follows the 19th-century production methods developed by Michael Thonet to produce stylistically accurate, handsome, and sturdy bentwood chairs, bentwood stools, tables, and accessories.

Designed by the Italian designer Alex Gufler, the Merano bentwood side chair is one of the newest items from TON.  The unique axis of the seat and arms give the chair contemporary character, but also allows the chair to maintain a certain traditional look.  The Merano bentwood armchair was the Red Dot Design Award Winner in 2011.
The Merano is constructed in one of the original bentwood factories set up by Michael Thonet in the 1800s. The factory has been in continuous operation since its inception in 1861.  It is now just one of three of the original bentwood factories still in production.

Mies van der Rohe’s MR chairs were designed in 1927 for the Weissenholf housing development project along with Mart Stam’s cantilever chair.  The chair uses a small gauge tubular steel frame that retained a certain amount spring providing extra added comfort to the clean design.  The chairs are part of the MR series of seating that exhibits Mies van der Rohe’s first use of bent tubular steel in its design.  It is a marvelous example of Mies’ use of a single closed structural line.
Though an early version of this cantilever chair was available in the Bauhaus colors of red, blue or yellow, today’s reproductions are finished with polished chrome.
Mies van der Rohe was one of the leaders of the Modern Movement and is widely regarded as a master of furniture design.   Over a period of 50 years, Mies van der Rohe was responsible for many of the world’s most important designs in architecture, furniture, lighting, and modern design philosophy.  Such important designs as the Barcelona Pavilion, the Seagram Building in New York, and the Farnsworth House cemented his name as a legend of modern classic design.
This reproduction of Mies van der Rohe’s Cantilever Chair (MR10) is carefully handcrafted in Tuscany, Italy.  Both the cane and hide leather version are finished in polished chrome.

Mies Van Der Rohe Mr Cantilever Chair

The Eileen Gray Non-Conformist Chair was designed between 1925 and 1929. Most notably, the left arm is gone allowing more freedom for the body to move in the chair.
Eileen Gray generated some of her most remarkable works during this time.  Though the prototype for the Non-Conformist Chair started in 1925, it is likely completion of the design happened during her time at the famed E. 1027 home in the south of France.
Until her death, Eileen Gray was fairly unrecognized, but she is now regarded as one of the most influential 20th-century designers and architects. The Non-Conformist Chair is a striking piece. Extreme attention has been paid to stitching and foam cutting to ensure the Non-Conformist Chair is very clean its appearance and will retain this beauty for years. The unique shape has been finished with a high degree of precision and triple chrome finish.

Eileen Gray Non Conformist Chair

Drawing inspiration from the refined sinuosity of the Lehnstuhl lounge chair and Bodystuhl chair, Nigel Coates brings us the Cafestuhl chair, an original interpretation of the Thonet tradition with a contemporary twist. This is an extremely comfortable and ergonomic chair which stands out for its sculpted anthropomorphic backrest that evokes the triangular shape of human shoulder blades. This elegant piece was conceived for residential applications with its strong designer look but is also suitable also for contract spaces.

Created in 1924 at the Bauhaus by Erich Brendel, we are proud to offer one of the rare and unique items from this period.  The M10 Bauhaus Table was revolutionary for its time and has influenced a massive number of space-saving tables since its inception in the 20s.  With castors and 4 flaps that allow for it to expand, it is useful in a variety of environments.
Erich Brendel was one of the participants at the Bauhaus School.  Notably, Brendel was one of the interior designers involved in decorating the House at Horn in Weimar for the 1923 Weimar Exhibition.  It provided "the greatest comfort with the greatest economy by the application of the best craftsmanship and the best distribution of space in form, size, and articulation" according to Gropius, the head of the Bauhaus School.

The Mart Stam chair was introduced in 1926 by the famous Dutch architect and furniture designer. Born in 1899, he was designing legendary pieces by age 27. Perhaps his most famous design is the Mart Stam chair that was initially developed for Weissenhof Stellung. The Mart Stam chair design became extremely popular instantaneously and influenced new designs by Mies Van der Rohe, Eileen Gray, and Marcel Breuer. His work in the Bauhaus and on the Weissenhof Stellung made him a popular designer almost overnight. His other works include contributions to the famed May Brigade, a group of architects charged with designing Stalinist cities in the former Soviet Union. After World War II, Mart Stam became involved in a number of reconstruction projects in Germany. He advocated rebuilding with a modernist approach but was unsuccessful as German citizens preferred restoring their cities to their pre-war grandeur. Mart Stam died in Switzerland in 1986.
Mart Stam introduced the Cantilever Chair in 1926, unaware that three years earlier a colleague who taught at the Cologne School of Art, Gerhard Stuttgen, had introduced a cold-drawn Mannesman tube that was eerily similar. Later Mies van der Rohe invited Mart Stam to the Stuttgart Weissenhof-Siedlung, where he presented his version of the cantilever chair. It was there Mart Stam learned of the methods of production and tools that were being utilized by the Bauhaus laboratories. Though similar to his colleagues, Mart Stam was awarded the authorship of the cantilever chair design by the German court.

Through the years, many variations of the No. 25 Bentwood Chair have been made.  This model is made at one of Michael Thonet's original factories located in the Czech Republic. The factory still exists over 150 years after its inception creating bentwood in classic as well as contemporary styles.

Michael Thonet No. 25 Bentwood Chair By Ton

Bauhaus furniture design was based on the premise that it was necessary to develop new and radically different forms for the pieces of furniture that would be in the modern home. The cantilevered chair shown here, designed by Marcel Breuer in 1928, is now so familiar that it is hard to imagine the shock of seeing a chair without back legs, formed from a seemingly continuous loop of chrome-plated steel.
The Bauhaus Cantilever Chair (D 40) was designed by Marcel Breuer at the Bauhaus Dessau in 1928. The D 40 armrests are made of beech (natural or black colored). The frame is made of nickel-plated steel, while the seat and back are made of either natural cane wickerwork or leather, black, white or nature or in a special fabric called 'Eisengarn'. Eisengarn is a very strong fabric developed by the Bauhaus Dessau to assure that the seat and back covering stays in shape even after a long time of use.

Two of Hoffmann's enduring furniture designs, the Hoffmann Kubus and Hoffmann Velvet chair have gone onto to be very popular into the 21st century. Hoffmann's ability to combine classic design principles to these modern pieces have made these pieces true modern classics.
This Josef Hoffmann Kubus Armchair was presented at the International Exhibition held in Buenos Aires in 1910 on the centennial of Argentinean Independence known as la Revolucion de Mayo. Josef Hoffmann had a preference for geometric composition based on the square that was later attributed to his own formal language called "Quadratstil." This language was evident in everything Josef Hoffmann created both architecturally as well as his innovative furniture designs, including the famed Kubus Chair.

The Artifort C 683 sofa is a 1968 design from Kho Liang Ie. Kho Liang Ie was a prominent Indonesian designer. Born in Magelang, Indonesia in 1927, he emigrated to Holland in 1949. Early in his career, he handled larger contract projects such as the Holland Travel Office in New York and the Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. His work with Artifort started in the mid-1960s.
This particular item is considered to have restrained simplicity. The Artifort C 683 Sofa has a channeled upholstery, where its related Artifort C 684 has a tufted upholstery.

The Marcel Breuer S43 Cabinet was designed in 1924.  This Bauhaus cabinet represents one of the famed designer's earliest works as he completed it when he was merely 22 years old.
Along with Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, and others, Marcel Breuer is considered to be one of the fathers of Modernism. As a student and a teacher at the Bauhaus-Dessau art school, Breuer focused on the integration of technology, materials, and art. During his career, he was an architect, teacher, and furniture designer. Marcel Breuer is famous for a number of commercially successful furniture designs that are still in production to this day.  The Wassily Chair, Laccio Table, and Cesca Chair are among his most enduring designs.

When Michael Thonet created the first A14 bentwood chair, he thought there could not be a simpler chair.  After all, the A14 bentwood chair is comprised of only six pieces of beechwood.  Czech designer Jaroslav Jurica proved this idea wrong while keeping in the bentwood furniture tradition of Michael Thonet.  In the 002 Bentwood Chair, Jurica uses just three pieces of wood to create a surprisingly comfortable chair.
Using equations from the French mathematician Gabriel Lame, Jurica worked on the development of the 002 Bentwood Chair at the Ton factory.  The ergonomics of the bentwood chair were studied and tested until the final form was developed and finally introduced at the Milan Furniture Fair in 2011.
The 002 bentwood chair was the winner of the Interior Innovation Award in 2012.

The No 150 Bentwood Stool is a legendary design created by August Thonet around 1985.  The bentwood stool exhibits only a small extent of bentwood bending technology.  The sturdy and beautiful design make it a favorite among homeowners and interior designers.
In 1852 Michael Thonet received a patent relating to the curving, cutting and regluing of woods. This helped to secure the foundation for Michael Thonet and his sons to create a mass production bentwood furniture facility in Vienna, Austria. This factory soon quickly became too small, and the company created an additional factory in the Moldavian mountains. The first year of production saw about 10,000 bentwood chairs being made. By 1860, the factory was producing over 50,000 chairs per year. Today it is estimated that over 50 million of Michael Thonet's bentwood furniture items have been manufactured in various factories around the world since the inception back in the mid-1800s.

Michael Thonet's A14 Bentwood Side Chair is the great classic. This bentwood chair is absolutely the most famous, most sold and most copied in the history of furniture. Designed by Michael Thonet in 1860, the No. 14 chair immediately became known as the bistro chair. Minimalist both in the chosen material and the fact that just six elements go into forming the entire item, the No. 14 Bentwood Chair is the result of almost twenty years of research. Simple, versatile and ever contemporary, it is considered the first true example of industrial design.  The structure is formed from carefully steam bent solid beechwood.  The backrest and back legs are formed out of a single piece of beechwood.  Various seats are available including veneer, perforated veneer, cane and upholstered.

This Mies van der Rohe inspired Three Seat Sofa clearly embodies the spirit of his Pavilion Series offering both the tailored look of a tufted upholstery as well as the sleek streamlined appearance of other pieces such as his BRNO chair. It is a wonderful example of the Bauhaus style offering a combination of simple form with a modern touch of comfort.
Mies Van der Rohe was born in Germany in 1886. At the age of 19, he moved to Berlin and starting working with the Art Nouveau architect and furniture designer Bruno Paul. Just a year later, he received his first commission for an architectural design for a local philosopher's home. Over the next 10 years, he studied the works of Frank Lloyd Wright and Karl Friedrich Schinkel. By 1912, he had his own studio in Berlin.
In 1927 Mies Van der Rohe designed one of the design community's most famous buildings, The German Pavilion at the International Exposition in Barcelona Spain. In it contained one of interior design's most famous chairs, the Pavilion Chair. The Pavilion in which he presented his Pavilion Chair had a flat roof supported by columns, while the interior was constructed of glass and marble.  Mies van der Rohe was Director of The Bauhaus School from 1930-1933. In 1937 he moved to Chicago where he became the Head of the architecture department at the Illinois Institute of Technology. During the next 15 years of his career, he designed skyscrapers for nearly every major city in America.
Mies van der Rohe is generally recognized as one of the founding fathers of Modernism, and the most purists of Modern architects. A constructional clarity, free-flowing space, and careful detailing, in accordance with his famous maxim "less is more" characterize his work.   Mies van der Rohe ranks as one of the most important twentieth-century designers based on his range of designs - from the functional simplicity of the cantilever chairs to the luxurious comfort of the Pavilion chair.

The Targa Bentwood Lounge Series was designed by the Italian-Danish designer duo Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi. Targa is a family consisting of an elegant two-seater sofa and an armchair, two elements which perfectly fit contract spaces designed for an intimate and secluded atmosphere, as well as non-conventional residential environments.
All elements of the brand’s tradition contribute to characterize the design’s profile: the bent beechwood structure holds the wide seat cushion and the upholstered backrest has a woven cane edge with an ellipsoidal element, the plate (targa), after which the design is named.

While a nice array of Saarinen tables are available on today's modern classic market, they represent just a portion of the creativity exhibited by this renowned designer. Eero Saarinen was known to experiment extensively with this tulip style exhibited in the table and chairs sold today.  Many of his experiments with the cast aluminum base have been lost to time, but now you can carry on Saarinen's work in your own studio with these Saarinen table bases.  Available in white or black, matte or glossy, each comes with a threaded rod for extending into your own custom created furniture. The two largest pedestals include mounting plates.
