The Number 18 Bentwood Chair was actually first designed by one of Michael Thonet's sons, August Thonet, in the late 1800s.  The A18 Bentwood Chair remains a popular item due to its light but strong characteristics.
In the 1840s Michael Thonet began experimenting with furniture made by bending wood that had been steamed into a soft and pliable state. Over the next 20 years, Michael Thonet and his sons developed the processes and machines that would allow them to build bentwood furniture in unprecedented quantities. It was in this time period that he developed what has become thought of as the "traditional" Michael Thonet designed bentwood chair: one featuring a backrest and back legs made from a single piece, a rounded cane or laminated seat, and front legs. In his effort to reduce the number of pieces used in building chairs, he had to connect the main elements that existed on different planes.  This could only be achieved by bending wood.  Michael Thonet's further experimentation with bending wood yielded amazing results.  By the 1850s, Michael Thonet's bentwood styles had become mainstream, and he was on his way to creating a catalog of chairs yet to be rivaled.
The output of Michael Thonet's factories was vast, due in part to his idea of designing separate pieces that would be combined to make a large number of models. Michael Thonet stands out as a designer and pioneer both in mass production and in design, as he artistically explored the new forms and unique qualities of his newly invented technique.  Remarkably few changes have been necessary over the last 150 years. The factory still follows the 19th-century production methods developed by Michael Thonet to produce stylistically accurate, handsome, and sturdy bentwood chairs, stools, tables, and accessories. Today the No. 18 Bentwood Chair is widely used in cafes, restaurants, offices, and homes.

Le Corbusier designed the original Grand Confort Lounge Chair (LC3) collection based on the human scale. A spirited advocate of Modernism, Le Corbusier created a range of Grand Confort Lounge Chairs (LC3) that expressed his ideas with great sophistication. These were first seen around 1929 as part of his "Equipment for the Home."
Sofas and loveseats came later, however. It was Mrs. Heidi Weber of Zurich who first put the Le Corbusier Grand Confort Lounge (LC3) collection into production in 1959. With his the approval, she changed the appearance of this chair and added this 3 seat sofa. She removed the spring mechanism and used fabricating methods, which allowed the frame to be chromed. She also gave the cushions a more formal & tailored look. Her contribution to the re-design of the collection was instrumental to the commercial success of the collection.
Though Le Corbusier is recognized as a leader in architectural modernism, he was also a writer, urban planner, industrial designer, and painter.  In 1918, Le Corbusier was introduced to the cubist painter Amedee Ozenfant.  Ozenfant encouraged Le Corbusier to collaborate with him.  Together they started an artistic movement commonly referred to as Purism.  Le Corbusier paintings today are still much sought after in the marketplace.  They can be regarded as equivalent in artistic style to other contemporaries such as Pablo Picasso.  Le Corbusier focused almost all of his artistic energy into painting until 1922.

The Mies van der Rohe Round Cocktail Table (MR140) was first displayed in 1927 at the renown Weissenhof housing development in Germany. In 1930 it was featured at the Tugendhat house in Brno, though this version used flat steel rather than round tubular steel.
Mies' MR140 table is one of his first creations using round tubular steel.  The most striking feature is the "upturned table" structure.  First designs used black glass, other colored glass and even lacquered wood to match Mies van der Rohe architectural creations.  The cross at the base offers a great amount of stability.
This table is often used as a side or lounge table, though it makes a stunning accent table as well.

The Rene Herbst Cord Chair, also known as the Sandows Chair, is just one example of the pioneering use of industrial material for which Rene Herbst became known. For this chair, Herbst used elastic cords (we know them now as "bungee cords") that at that time were used to wrap parcels. HIs chair was first shown to the public at the Paris Salon d'Automne des Artistes Decorateurs in 1929. Rene Herbst founded the company Etablissements Rene Herbst in an effort to produce and sell his designs.

Marcel Breuer designed the Cesca Chair in 1928 with the interest of comfort in mind. Like his progressive Wassily Chair (1925), the Cesca Chair is constructed of tubular steel. The chair was named "Cesca" as a tribute to his daughter Francesca and was never patented, explains a 1991 New York Times article. "While Breuer signed a contract with Knoll Group, his design has always been in the public domain," noted the group's vice president of design at the time.
The tubular steel cantilever chair was first invented by Mart Stam, though over time this has been met with controversy. One thing that is certain - it was a revolutionary type of chair for the 1920s. Stam’s cantilever chair was exhibited and sold for the first time in 1927. Not long thereafter Marcel Breuer and Mies van der Rohe introduced cantilever tubular steel chairs as well.

The Charles Rennie Mackintosh Argyle Chair was designed for Miss Cranston's Tea Rooms in Argyle Street, Glasgow. The high back Argyle chairs were placed around the tables in the center of the room in order to create an intimate island. Although Mackintosh is unanimously considered one of the outstanding figures of Art Nouveau, in many aspects his work anticipates some themes of Modernism. It is no coincidence that Nicolas Pevsner includes him in his "Pioneers of Modern Design" (1936). Wylie Sypher, in his "From Rococo to Cubism" (1960), specifies how both rococo and art nouveau were movements within the decorative arts that were integrated into architecture as well. In Mackintosh's interior designs, stylized lines and geometric forms reinforce an architectural dialog which from Art Nouveau onwards, with the progressive marginalization of 19th-century decorative syntax, mirrored the unification of interior design and architecture characterizing the modern movement.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh Argyle Chair

Designed in 1954 by Pierre Paulin, Artifort reintroduced the Moulin side chair and armchair in 2013.  This chair was previously part of the offering of Thonet in France but is now under the Artifort umbrella that includes an array of Pierre Paulin's most popular furniture designs.
Artifort refers to the Moulin as "an old-fashioned chair", and in a way, it is.  It was originally conceived by Pierre Paulin in 1954 on the Rue Jean Moulin.  It is a simple and modest, clean and strikingly modern classic.

In 1967, Geoffrey Harcourt designed a series of swivel armchairs with trumpet bases, based on a shell-shaped template. The shell is large enough to curl up in and is the paragon of his philosophy that ‚ "the chair should focus on the person, and not the other way around." To begin with, there are different versions of the chair for men and women (with high and low backs respectively). These were later followed by models with stitched edging, fixed cushions, and deep-buttoned padding. Despite the fact that Harcourt had not been designing for a long time, in 2011 he delivered the blueprint for a new, contemporary base for the 500 series. This is the cross-foot base that Artifort introduced in 2012, together with extra-thick deep-buttoned upholstery.

The Saarinen Tulip Table is one of the most popular items in the Eero Saarinen furniture range. Created in 1957, the beautiful Saarinen Table envelopes the thought and theory behind one of the 20th century's great architects. Constructed of cast aluminum, the Saarinen table flows from top to bottom and from side to side in a fluid exchange of lines.
Eero Saarinen started designing furniture in his teens, but it wasn't until he won first place in 1940 in the Museum of Modern Art's Organic Design in Home Furnishings that he would be seen as a serious industrial designer.  Though the plywood chair that he designed with Charles Eames for the competition was never put into production, it did allow for him further his career in furniture design.

The Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge (LC4) is the best known and most successful of his designs that first exhibited at the Salon D' Automne in 1929. The Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge (LC4) was designed in 1928 for the furnishing of a villa in the Ville d' Avray and utilizes exposed structural elements with padded leather cushion and headrest.
During his career, Le Corbusier spent much of his efforts on designing building and environments for urbanism. His designs called for large blocks of cell-like individual apartments stacked one on top of the other, with plans that included a living room, bedrooms, and kitchen. Around this thought process, he designed entire cities.

The original version of Frederick Kiesler's Freeform Nesting Tables was custom manufactured for the designer's friend and patron, Martin Janis, in 1935.
Kiesler was a theater and art-exhibition designer in the 1920s in Vienna and Berlin. From 1920, he briefly collaborated with Adolf Loos and became a member of the De Stijl group in 1923. Artist, architect, and visionary, Kiesler was friendly with many of the major figures of the European avant-garde. In 1942, Peggy Guggenheim commissioned Kiesler to design her gallery, "The Art of This Century", with an emphasis on "developing new methods for exhibiting paintings, drawings, sculptures, and objects." There, Kiesler designed revolutionary presentation systems and multi-functional furniture for four exhibit spaces featuring such artists as Marcel Duchamp and Paul Klee. The gallery showcased works by established European artists with an emphasis on Surrealism and also exhibited the works of lesser-known American artists, often for the first time.

He rounded the front edge of the Cesca seat so as not to cut into the sitter's legs. Breuer's version with a beech wood seat and back was nevertheless a brilliant solution to the structural stiffness of a cantilever frame. The chair was named "Cesca" as a tribute to Breuer's daughter Francesca.

The Saarinen Tulip Table is one of the most famous pieces in our Saarinen furniture collection. Created in 1954 - 1957, the majestic Saarinen Table envelopes the theory behind one of the 20th century's great architects. Constructed of cast aluminum, the table flows from top to bottom and from side to side in a fluid exchange of lines.
The Saarinen Table and Pedestal Series have proved to be immune to the fluctuations of fashion over the past 60 years.  The harmony presented by the Saarinen Table is a balance of modern classic experimentation and stability.
The Large Saarinen Table table shown here is a favorite as it can be used in a variety of spaces, but is most commonly used as a dining or conference table. This Saarinen Table has a durable lacquered cast aluminum base in white, black, or silver. The Saarinen Table base is treated with a clear protective finish to resist scratches, stains, and scuffs. Stone tops are protected with a natural wax finish.

Eero Saarinen Tulip Table - Oval Dining 48 X 92 Inch

This Charles Rennie Mackintosh Sideboard is part of a series of models designed by Mackintosh supposedly for the country home of W.J. Basset-Lowke. They were not produced during the lifetime of Mackintosh, and are known only from a pencil and watercolor drawing now in the Glasgow University Collection.
The design of the stained glass panel in the sideboard is not indicated in the Mackintosh drawing. The present reproduction utilizes Mackintosh's design of the "weeping rose" as was first used by him in 1900 on the writing desk of the musician, Michael Diak. The weeping rose motif was a favorite of Mackintosh and he used it for other stained glass panels and other cabinets. Charles Rennie Mackintosh is known as one of the most creative and skilled architects and interior designers of the 20th century. Many of his furniture, glass, and architectural designs have grown in popularity now over 100 years later. His signature Art Nouveau style can be easily recognized.

The refined elegance of the Japanese minimalism is combined with GTV's bentwood history by the designer Nendo in order to bentwood in a contemporary light. A rigorous and poetic approach has been distilled by the essence of bentwood design research.  In the Single Curve design, the steam-bent wood expresses only one structural detail, which draws the attention to each element of the Single Curve Collection: a low table, a dining table, and stools in three or four legs versions.

Introduced in 1850, the No. 4 Bentwood Chair (also known widely as the Cafe Daum bentwood chair) proved to be an instant success.  This bentwood chair was first ordered by the proprietor of the Cafe Daum in Vienna, a meeting place for foreign correspondents and members of the military.  The bentwood chairs were made of bent mahogany and laminated wood strips.  They later appeared in a slightly different form as "Chair A4" in the company's catalogs. Michael Thonet's new cafe bentwood chairs were lightweight, elegant, strong, and were characterized by grace and fluidity of line which made them unique in European furniture of the period.
Through the years, many variations of the A4 bentwood chair were made.  This particular model is made at one of Michael Thonet's original factories located in the Czech Republic.  The factory still exists over 150 years after its inception creating bentwood in classic as well as contemporary styles.
Very few changes have been necessary over the last 150 years. The bentwood factory still follows the 19th-century production methods developed by Michael Thonet to produce stylistically accurate, handsome, and sturdy bentwood chairs, stools, tables, and accessories.

August Thonet No. 4 Bentwood Chair

The K36 Bench and M36 Table are two of Tecta’s most recent furniture item. The company’s co-owner, Christian Drescher, met Andree Weissert­ at a design festival in 2013. Tecta’s­­presentation was entitled "Flying Furni­ture", and Weissert’s was called "I Believe I Can Fly". As a result of this happy coincidence, the two fell into conversa­tion, and are now working together, united in their passion for the poetry of design and the belief that it is essentially a dialogue between ideas, materials, and production techniques.
The K36 Bench and its matching M36 Dining Table are the third in a series inspired by a U-Bahn viaduct seen on a­ Sunday stroll in Berlin’s Kreuzberg dis­trict. The structure of the bridge, designed by engineers to absorb dynamic stresses, consists of load-bearing struts and braces that follow the lines of force and combine them into a functional whole. It is entirely self-contained, a quality that Weissert’s work also seeks to achieve.
Weissert describes himself as a "structural engineer of the emotions", and his works are usually assembled in the workshop before being recorded on paper. The version with the wooden base reflects the constraints of the studio, while the tubular frame is the result of his own observations, and of conversations with Axel Bruchhäuser and Christian Drescher in the Tecta factory.
