The Apelle Jump Stool was designed in 2013 by the Spanish designer Beatriz Sempere. With the use of high resistance steel and thick hide leather, Sempere was able to create a complete series of modernist seating.

Designed in 1954 by Pierre Paulin, Artifort reintroduced the Moulin side chair and armchair in 2013.  This chair was previously part of the offering of Thonet in France but is now under the Artifort umbrella that includes an array of Pierre Paulin's most popular furniture designs.
Artifort refers to the Moulin as "an old fashioned chair", and in a way, it is.  It was originally conceived by Pierre Paulin in 1954 on the Rue Jean Moulin.  It is a simple and modest, clean and strikingly modern classic.
The Moulin makes a great dining chair or chair for a work table.

Mies van der Rohe’s Tugendhat Armchair was designed for the Tugendhat House in Brno, the Czech Republic in 1929.  The chair is one of several different furniture pieces designed for the home of Greta Weiss and Fritz Tugendhat.   In the design of the home, Mies designed nearly every detail down to the furniture used.  He also prescribed the placement of each furniture piece in the home to maintain spatial composition.
In recent years, the Tugendhat House has undergone a renovation, and the home may be visited by those interested in design.
This chair with its cantilever base was intended to be a more comfortable version of the Barcelona and a substitute for the traditional overstuffed upholstery usually found in living rooms. The Tugendhat Armchair was originally designed in a flat steel version as well as a tubular steel version, though earlier producers, such as Thonet, put neither chair into production. Not until 1964 was the flat steel chair produced by Knoll.  Its production ceased in the early 1980s.
The Cantilever Pavilion Chair is a beautifully constructed hybrid of the Barcelona and the Brno flat arm. The base is made of triple chrome plated flat steel and the cushions are hand constructed of hand-sewn individual tiles of Italian aniline leather. It has a support system of hide leather straps.  Those on the back of the chair have a detailing of buckles to hold them taut.

Mies Van Der Rohe Tugendhat Armchair

Mies van der Rohe's MR40 Lounge Chair was designed in 1931.  The MR series was the first tubular steel frame furniture structures that Mies designed. Inspired by Mart Stam's cantilever frame, Mies' continuous shape is seen in other furniture pieces by this master.
Mies van der Rohe’s term “less is more” will be forever ingrained in the philosophy of modern industrial designers and architects.  His impact on furniture design and architecture is as strong today as they were in the 1930s.  Born in Germany, Mies van der Rohe was the Director of the Bauhaus from 1930 – 1933.  He immigrated to the United States in 1938 and continued his design career.  He is responsible for a number of famous architectural projects including the Seagram Building in New York, the Berlin National Gallery, and 860-880 Lake Shore Drive in Chicago.
This lounge takes advantage of the aesthetic qualities of tubular steel, a supposedly utilitarian material while exuding luxury through the contrast between padded leather and the minimalism of its chrome frame.

Mies Van Der Rohe Mr40 Lounge Armchair

Lilly Reich is probably best known as the personal and professional assistant to Mies van der Rohe from 1925 to 1938.  This particular item was designed in 1927, just three years before she joined Mies at the Bauhaus School in Dessau.  It shows off her early talent as a modernist designer and a technical ability in the relatively new craft of tubular steel bending.
While at Bauhaus, Reich taught interior design and furniture design.  It is said that she was a constant companion of Mies van der Rohe during this time.  Together they collaborated on many exhibitions, and perhaps most notably, Mies did not create any successful furniture items before he met Lilly Reich, or after their relationship ended.  Two examples of their hugely popular furniture designs include the Barcelona Lounge Chair and Brno Chair.

This MR Armchair was designed by Mies van Der Rohe at the Bauhaus in 1927; the wicker-work on this chair was created by Lilly Reich, assistant to Mies.
Mies van der Rohe’s MR chairs were designed for the Weissenholf housing development project.  The chair uses a tubular steel frame that retains spring providing extra added comfort to the clean design.  The chairs are part of the MR series of seating that exhibits Mies van der Rohe’s first use of bent tubular steel in its design.  The armchair is a stellar example of Mies’ use of a single closed structural line.
Though an early version of this cantilever chair was available in the Bauhaus colors of red, blue, or yellow, today’s reproductions are finished with polished chrome.
Mies van der Rohe was one of the leaders of the Modern Movement and is widely regarded as a master of modern classic furniture design.   Over a period of 50 years, Mies van der Rohe was responsible for many of the world’s most important designs in architecture, furniture, lighting, and modern design philosophy.  Such important designs as the Tugendhat House, the Seagram Building in New York, and the Lange House cemented his name as a legend of modern classic design.

Pith cane is round while rush cane is a flat reed.  Rush cane is considered to be more durable, while pith is considered to be more beautiful.  Neither do well in dry conditions. With proper care, cane chairs can last up to 25 years.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh created the Willow Chair (Settee) for the Willow Tea Room in Glasgow, Scotland between 1902 and 1904. The Willow Chair was used in the center of the two ground floor saloons at the Willow Tea Rooms, separating the front and back saloon. The Willow Chair's curved back forms the pattern of a willow tree and the lattice is made from a series of short horizontal insets between the continuous verticals slats. The chair was used by the tea room's supervisor. The grate design in the curved back appears to be a stylized tree and a play on the name of the tearoom. According to Pevsner, the architecture of the Willow Team Room reveal Mackintosh as the European counterpart to Frank Lloyd Wright. Born in 1864 near Glasgow, Scotland, Charles Rennie Mackintosh decided at the early age of 16 on architecture as a career.
During his career, the city of Glasgow's buildings, furniture, and art would be changed by the impact of Mackintosh's creative style. Nearly all of his creations (including his most famous architectural design, the Glasgow School of Art), would be in and around Glasgow. Many of the Mackintosh pieces available from Bauhaus2YourHouse were originally designed for Tea Rooms throughout the city of Glasgow.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh Willow Chair

This particular armchair, the F51, was designed by Gropius for his office at the Dessau Bauhaus. Widely studied, the F51 chair is a particular favorite of architects and designers. Its bold look dominates any environment.
Walter Gropius was a German architect and founder of Bauhaus. Along with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, he is widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of "modern" architecture.
In 1908 Gropius found employment with the firm of Peter Behrens, one of the first members of the utilitarian school. His fellow employees at this time included Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Dietrich Marcks. In 1910 Gropius left the firm of Behrens, and together with fellow employee Adolf Meyer, established a practice in Berlin, where he remained until the onset of World War I. In 1919, Gropius was appointed the Master the Grand-Ducal Saxon School of Arts and Crafts in Weimar. It was this academy which Gropius transformed into the world-famous Bauhaus, attracting a faculty which included Paul Klee, Johannes Itten, Josef Albers, Herbert Bayer, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and Wassily Kandinsky. Students collaborated on the use of modern and innovative materials and mass-produced fittings, often originally intended for industrial settings, to create original furniture and buildings.
With the help of the English architect Maxwell Fry, Gropius was able to get out of Germany in 1934, on the pretext of making a temporary visit to Britain. Thus he escaped the rising antisemitism in Germany. He lived and worked in Britain, as part of the Isokon group with Fry and others until moving to the United States in 1937.

Walter Gropius Das Faguswerk Alfeld Armchair D51

Designed by the Italian designer Alex Gufler, the Merano Stool is one of the most popular contemporary designs from TON.  The unique axis of the seat gives the chair contemporary character, but also allows the chair to maintain a certain traditional look.  The Merano design was the Red Dot Design Award Winner in 2011.
The Merano Stool is constructed in one of the original bentwood factories set up by Michael Thonet in the 1800s. The factory has been in continuous operation since its inception in 1861.  It is now just one of three of the original bentwood factories still in production.

Designed by the Italian-Danish duo GamFratesi who wanted to pay tribute to the Viennese roots of the GTV brand, Waltz is a modular wall coat hanger inspired by the lightness of the steps of the oldest, best-known ballroom dance from which the piece takes its name. The repeated sinuous rotations of the dance are the inspiration behind the concept and shape of the piece which, although well-defined, leaves space for project freedom thanks to the possibility to combine multiple modules, each made up of three curved elements – the first two facing upwards and the third facing down – and position them along the wall on the same axis or flip them upside down, thus reproducing the ideal line traced by the willowy movements of two dancers spinning incessantly to the sound of music, tracing the profile of the waltz on the dance floor.

This round Shaker table comes from a design dating back to about 1820, which unified the characteristics of the models produced by the New Lebanon Shaker community near New York.
Shaker Furniture has become legendary around the world for its simple beauty. Shaker furniture takes its roots from the 19th-century religious sect - the Shakers. The Shakers were an offshoot from the Quakers, an English religious group with their roots dating back to the 18th century. During the 1800s the Shakers grew to several thousand converts living in Shaker communities throughout the United States from Kentucky to Maine. The Shakers became famous for their unique style of furniture. It is simple, unique and durable. The pieces were normally produced in mass production using the appropriate tools and mechanisms to do so. This was performed in order to provide the same furniture throughout the settlement. With communities throughout the American South, Midwest and Northeast, their master wood workmanship lives on today in this beautiful reproduction.

The No. 18 Bentwood Chair was first designed by Michael Thonet's son, August Thonet, in the 1800s.  The 18 Bentwood Chair remains a popular item due to is light but strong characteristics.
In the 1840s Michael Thonet began experimenting with bentwood furniture made by bending wood that had been steamed into a soft and pliable state. Over the next 20 years, Michael Thonet and his sons developed the processes and machines that would allow them to build bentwood furniture in unprecedented quantities. It was in this time period that he developed what has become thought of as the "traditional" Michael Thonet designed bentwood chair: one featuring a backrest and back legs made from a single piece, a rounded cane or laminated seat, and front legs. In his effort to reduce the number of pieces used in building bentwood chairs, he had to connect the main elements that existed on different planes.  This could only be achieved by bending wood.  Michael Thonet's further experimentation with bending wood yielded amazing results.  By the 1850s, Michael Thonet's bentwood styles had become mainstream, and he was on his way to creating a catalog of chairs yet to be rivaled.
The output of Michael Thonet's bentwood chair factories was vast, due in part to his idea of designing separate pieces that would be combined to make a large number of models. Michael Thonet stands out as a designer and pioneer both in mass production and in design, as he artistically explored the new forms and unique qualities of his newly invented technique.  Remarkably few changes have been necessary over the last 150 years. The factory still follows the 19th-century production methods developed by Michael Thonet to produce stylistically accurate, handsome, and sturdy bentwood chairs, stools, tables, and accessories. Today the A18 bentwood chair is widely used in cafes, restaurants, offices, and homes.

Michael Thonet's company designed the no. 811 Bentwood Chair in the 1920s. Sometimes also called the "Prague chair" the A811 bentwood chair is often attributed to Josef Hoffmann, but is more likely the design of Josef Frank. The No. 811 Bentwood Chair was first introduced as the A64F and had a different version of front legs than later versions.  The No. 811 bentwood chair is also one of the first versions of bentwood chairs to be offered in a variety of colored finishes that were not previously offered.  The A811 bentwood chair was one of the company's most popular 20th-century designs and is still widely used by designers worldwide.

In his effort to reduce the number of pieces used in building bentwood chairs, he had to connect the main elements that existed on different planes.  This could only be achieved by bending wood.  Michael Thonet's further experimentation with bending wood yielded amazing results.  By the 1850s, Michael Thonet's bentwood styles had become mainstream, and he was on his way to creating a catalog of bentwood chairs yet to be rivaled.
The output of Michael Thonet's factories was vast, due in part to his idea of designing separate pieces that would be combined to make a large number of models. Michael Thonet stands out as a designer and pioneer both in mass production and in design, as he artistically explored the new forms and unique qualities of his newly invented technique.  Remarkably few changes have been necessary over the last 150 years. The factory still follows the 19th-century production methods developed by Michael Thonet to produce stylistically accurate, handsome, and sturdy bentwood chairs, bentwood stools, tables, and accessories.

The Michael Thonet 20 Bentwood Chair is widely used in cafes, restaurants, offices, and homes due to its aesthetic appeal and increased comfort from the upholstered ring in the back.
In 1860, Gebruder Thonet introduced a bentwood rocking chair that would take this piece from being something for the aristocracy to a chair of comfort for the middle class.  This marketing to the masses approach became the cornerstone of the company both through their first rocking chair and the 14 Bentwood Chair.  The 14 Bentwood Chair itself eventually attained the name “chair for mass consumption”.  Deviations from the A14 Bentwood Chair, such as the No. 20 Bentwood Chair, soon grew in popularity as well.

The Magistretti Bentwood Chair was designed in 2003 by Vico Magistretti.  In this unique and elegant design, Magistretti uses a solid beech structure with round section curved elements in the armrest and backrest areas. The seat is comprised of a sculpted once piece curved plywood beechwood seat shell.

Magistretti 03 01 Bentwood Chair By Gtv

Eileen Gray opened a furniture showroom space in Paris in 1922 (Galerie Jean Desert, named after a fictitious male "owner" and a trip to the desert) at 217 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore to exhibit and sell her work. The gallery boasted a chic clientele including Vicomte de Noailles and the couturier Elsa Schiaparelli. There she sold her tubular metal furniture and lacquered pieces, as well as accessories, such as carpets. This Eileen Gray Folding Table, known as the Jean Table, was part of the collection.
Eileen Gray, the designer of this folding table, was fairly neglected for most of her career but is now regarded as one of the most influential 20th-century designers and architects. Famous for classics such as the Bibendum Chair, which typifies Gray's opulent take on the stark modernist aesthetic, she has earned the recognition she so deserved.

Eileen Gray Roquebrune Chair

Mart Stam, the designer of this chair, was a famous Dutch architect and furniture designer. Born in 1899, he was designing legendary pieces by age 27. Perhaps his most famous design is the Mart Stam chair that was initially developed for Weissenhof Stellung. The Mart Stam chair design became extremely popular instantaneously and influenced new designs by Mies Van der Rohe, Eileen Gray, and Marcel Breuer. His work in the Bauhaus and on the Weissenhof Stellung made him a popular designer almost overnight. His other works include contributions to the famed May Brigade, a group of architects charged with designing Stalinist cities in the former Soviet Union. After World War II, Mart Stam became involved in a number of reconstruction projects in Germany. He advocated rebuilding with a modernist approach but was unsuccessful as German citizens preferred restoring their cities to their pre-war grandeur. Mart Stam died in Switzerland in 1986.
Mart Stam introduced the Cantilever Armchair in 1926, unaware that three years earlier a colleague who taught at the Cologne School of Art, Gerhard Stuttgen, had introduced a cold-drawn Mannesman tube that was eerily similar. Later Mies van der Rohe invited Mart Stam to the Stuttgart Weissenhof-Siedlung, where he presented his version of the cantilever armchair. It was there Mart Stam learned of the methods of production and tools that were being utilized by the Bauhaus laboratories. Though similar to his colleagues, Mart Stam was awarded the authorship of the cantilever chair design by the German court.

Mart Stam Cantilever Armchair

The Oval Dining Saarinen Tulip Table was part of Eero Saarinen’s Pedestal Series first introduced in New York in 1958.  Originally Eero Saarinen wanted to use plastics for the tulip-shaped base but settled on cast aluminum as he could not find the materials strong enough to support the variety of tops he used.  Initially, 10 different sizes of tables were introduced including side tables, coffee tables, and dining tables.  Each used either a round or oval base depending on its shape.
Our Saarinen Tables are high quality 100% Italian-made reproductions of the original Saarinen Table. Close attention is paid to the workmanship of the stone and base creating a mid-century modern table meant to last for years. The Saarinen Table cast aluminum base is available in matte white or black, glossy white or black, or matte silver. The Saarinen Table top is available in a wide variety of stones and laminates, including the popular white Carrara and black Marquina.
The Saarinen Table base is treated with a clear protective finish over tough epoxy paint meant to resist scratches, stains, and scuffs. Stone tops are protected with a natural wax finish.

The Metz Armchair was named after the Amsterdam based department store Metz & Co. for which Rietveld designed the chair in 1942. As early as in 1932, Metz & Co. asked Rietveld to design a showroom for his furniture on top of their building in Amsterdam. It was in this showroom where Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and later Pol Kjaerholm presented their contemporary designs in the Netherlands for the first time. During the Second World War Rietveld refused to adhere to the German ‘Kulturkammer’, a Nazi-controlled cultural board. As a result of this, he wasn’t allowed to produce the Armchair for Metz & Co. Luckily the drawings and prototypes were preserved and could be used to reconstruct the chair 75 years after its first design. The beautifully crafted frame of the chair was designed with thin slats of oak. The seat consists of an upholstered polyurethane foamed frame with an upholstered comfortable pad. This pad is finished with a blanket stitch that gives this historic design both comfort and a distinguished look.

Gerrit Rietveld Metz Armchair

Marcel Breuer designed a similar lounge chair to this constructed with aluminum in 1932 and called the style simply "Long Chair". A year later a Swiss furniture company put that chair into production. Not until 1935 did this upgraded Breuer Long Chair surface. It was put into production by The Isokon Company, an English enterprise founded earlier that year which was dedicated to the application of modern functional design to the construction of houses, apartments, and furniture. Breuer was involved with the modification of his "Long Chair" design, and it became a highly successful design for the Isokon Company in the following years.
Breuer’s Long Chair in wood was based upon earlier lounge chairs he had designed from aluminum. This wood version of his lounge chair would require much more work and expense as it cost more to split wood than aluminum. Due to the insufficient supply of aluminum, wood was chosen as the material to be used on the Long Chair.
The first versions of the Breuer Long Chairs from 1935 were quickly modified and improved upon. At least 10 versions of this chair exist, most of which never made it into mass production. Each used a cantilever design with a plywood frame.
