Description

A ray of light to a happy, colorful future? The late, great Verner Panton believed in this possibility, and designed with this in mind. The visionary Dane was the first to do inflatable furniture, cardboard houses and single-form, injection-molded plastic chairs—and all with an optimistic nod. Those chairs appeared in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey; the same year experienced revolutions in the streets of Paris, Rome and the U.S. celebrating change by a generation fueled on Flower Power and a new outlook on the world. Verner marked it all the next year with the FlowerPot series of table and pendant lights. Spherical, bold and modern, they are as fresh looking now as they were in 1969. No wonder Copenhagen house &Tradition decided to reissue them.

Simon's seamless polypropylene shell chair emerged from more than 20 prototypes created over the course of several years. There's a modern grandeur to Djembé, with its voluminous shape and outside appearance recalling the texture of a stone. Using a rotomolding technique allowed designer Joan Gaspar to conceive a fixture with vastly different surfaces. The spacious interior has a smooth white satin-finish to reflect the light that emanates from the lacquered grey aluminum diffuser. Vv Cinquanta Suspension Lamp

Description

Marset's Pleat Box series, with model 13 a mini version, raids the digital toolbox for a design that's applied to one of the oldest heritage crafts—ceramics. A computer-generated fold in a piece of cloth becomes a striking creased ceramic shade, in a range of color options resulting from recycling different enamels. On the interior, a choice of either bright white or warm gold enamel creates a glittering effect. Pleat Box is also an exciting and first-ever union between between Xavier Mañosa, a master ceramicist from Barcelona, and the Mashallah design studio in Berlin with the Marset brand. Xavier's detour as an industrial designer informs his bold shapes while Mashallah, the brainchild of Hande Ak ç ayli and Murat Ko ç yigit, is right at the intersection of art and technology.

Boucle stems from the imagination of French artist Eric de Dormael, who's brass and steel wire work considers the encounters between light and architectural forms. His studies into light and shadows, shapes and empty spaces, and how even the patina plays on this tension is central to his sculptural art work and products such as this series. Drawing is a particularly primordial aspect of this work, as is the fluidity of form. We add magic to that list with this mesmerizing LED lamp. Replicating the hypnotic effect of candlelight, spindly, solid brass rods rise from a black metal base like intertwining shafts of wheat and are topped with miniature LED lights. When touched, the vibrating effect is like dance. Powered by a rechargeable battery and completely mobile, the lamp offers an entrancing glow to any setting.

"X" marks the spot. Or in the case of the Wendela Chair, the horizontal line on the back of the seat tells the story of this unconventional but supremely comfortable piece of furniture. For those in the know, the telltale line marks the leavings of the mold that shapes layers of beech wood to achieve the chair's distinctive ergonomic combination of seat flexibility and back support. But then things take a postmodern turn. Lightweight aluminum legs of an almost utilitarian nature are paired with the seat and the visible connecting ends harken back to traditional carpenters' joinery. Christoph Seyferth, the brains behind Serener, has a CV that spans fine arts, carpentry, and architecture, and he has done everything from build his own house to design eyewear for Adidas.
