Description

Tapering off from the familiar form of a carafe, the Beat Tall offers another variation in British designer Tom Dixon's lineup of pendant lights. Originally conceived during a field trip to India with his Royal College of Art students, the shapes are based on traditional brass cooking pots and water vessels. Using the same time-honored techniques, the lamps are spun and hand-beaten by skilled craftsmen from Moradabad in Northern India. But the technology is pure 21st Century, utilizing an LED light source. The firm Tom Dixon, established in 2002 by the renowned designer and his partner David Begg, encompasses everything from chairs to fragrance as well as a deep dive into lighting. Tom has been recognized with OBE honors and his work sits in museums across the globe including London's Victoria and Albert, New York's Museum of Modern Art and Paris' Centre Georges Pompidou.

Designer Tom Dixon is one cool individual, at least judging by his ever-so-chill Plum Ice Bucket. The generous spherical bowl is made of mouth-blown glass shaded in an unexpected midnight blue and etched with hand-cut surface rings. The contrasting copper lid—a "stem" to this metaphorical "blueberry"—has a mirror-like high sheen that complements Tom's companion Cocktail Shaker and Tongs from his Plum Collection. Designed in England and made in India.

A thick piping sweeps along the edge of this 3-seater, demarcating the contrast between the straight shape outside and the softer sculpted cushioning within. Arc flouts its graceful curves and creates a feeling of comfortable intimacy, a priority for young designer Hallgeir Homstvedt, for seating that seems homelike even in contract environs. With Edition Three of his eponymous Anglepoise series, British designer Paul Smith elects the primary palette favored by the Dutch artist Mondrian. It turns out that Woud's Mono template makes for handsome bar and counter stools to be added to the series. Finnish designer Kasper Nyman took inspiration from a folded paper cone for the seat with its signature drop-shaped inset and it became a reality via new woodworking technology. In care-treated natural or black oak finish, the chair's thermoformable Grada veneer is an eco-friendly material derived from responsibly managed forests and does not contain formaldehyde or other harmful compounds.
