Description

Is it an ottoman? Or a table? The Drum by Los Angeles-based Bend bends both ways. Gaurav Nanda's tables and chairs are designed with a flexible life in mind. Take them indoors or outdoors. Each piece is made of an iron that can be repeatedly recycled, and all pieces are sandblasted, then pre-treated with anti-rust zinc primer and powder coated for extended life right in Gaurav's L.A. studio. It all starts with a machine-molded frame that undergoes upwards of 400 handmade spot-welds — a process Gaurav refers to as "bending." Each bend is carefully arranged to ensure structural strength. Gaurav, who grew up in the Detroit suburbs and even spent part of his design career at General Motors, draws pattern inspiration from his childhood: the intricate macramé his mother made; string art Spirograph drawing sets. Tip: we added a glass top for a table with a larger shared surface.

This lovable Lucy references the golden age of midcentury design. So what could be more appropriate than a metallic version of Bend Goods' signature dining chair? In a choice of gold or copper finish, Gaurav Nanda builds comfort right in to these beauties, with the carefully considered angle of the backrest, curve of the seat and closeness of the wire spacing. Each piece is machine-molded and undergoes upwards of 400 handmade spot-welds—a process he refers to as "bending"—for structural strength. Oskar Zieta works all the angles with his Tafla Polygonal Mirror Collection. Extending the innovative FIDU (short for free inner-pressure deformation) process, he moves beyond his original crumpled furniture to wall hangings that are nothing short of works of art.
