If progress is about improving on a classic, then Los Angeles designer Gaurav Nanda has succeeded with his collection of chairs under the Bend banner. When it comes to pretty much every wire chair on the market, sitting has its limits—even among the standard bearer of them all, the metal rod chairs by Harry Bertoia for Knoll Studio, still a Midcentury modern classic after all these years. The wires on Bend chairs are spaced less than a quarter-inch apart, making these chairs a pleasure to sit on. Each piece is machine-molded and undergoes upwards of 400 handmade spot-welds—a process Gaurav refers to as “bending.” Each bend is carefully arranged to ensure structural strength, while the angles of the back, the curves of the seat, and the closeness of the wires are designed to encourage relaxation, comfort and utility. Gaurav, who grew up in the Detroit suburbs and even spent part of his design career at General Motors, draws pattern inspiration from his childhood: the intricate macramé his mother made; string art Spirograph drawing sets. (He was also a part of the design and conception of Clocky with his sister Gauri).
What’s more, the collection is made of an iron that can be repeatedly recycled (something for your green heads), and all pieces are sandblasted, then pre-treated with anti-rust zinc primer and powder coated for extended life right in Gaurav’s L.A. studio.

We'd already fallen for the simplicity of the frame (not to mention the many colors it comes in, from Rose to Forest Green, as pictured here). But the realization that it neatly stacked sold us. The curved back is a technique of steam-bending wood into curves, without the warping, which Florence-born designer Lucian Randolph Ercolani innovated. Its a method that appears throughout the L. Ercolani collection, part of the modernist mission of the British furniture factory he founded after he relocated to Britain in 1920. The Stacking Chair appeared in 1957 and became an immediate standard in meeting rooms and schools before. Today, this beech or elm chair remains a striking alternative to plastic—and makes for a dramatic display that stacks up.

First as an industrial light and then adapted for home use, the timeless Anglepoise with its adjustable arms has been a fixture of life across the pond ever since it was introduced in the 1930s. (Its inventor, automobile designer George Carwardine, had patented a new kind of helical spring that was able to extend, contract and reliably remain in a fixed position. With that, he was able to create the the forerunner to the quintessential Type 75.) With the Visu Chair, designer Mika Tolvanen wanted to put his own spin on this modern classic. "The task was to create a personal interpretation of the ever-relevant plywood chair," he says. Description

A small diameter of wood is the starting point for the Castor stool and chair by Swiss studio Big-Game for Japanese maker Karimoku New Standard. The joint detail is a nod to the traces left by beavers on wood. A reinforced joint between the legs and the cross supporting the seat makes the light, slender, stackable Castor Stool Plus a sturdy and durable companion for home environments as well as contract projects. Like the bench and the shelf, the stool is made from Japanese oak. Big-Game is only among the latest to join KNS. Some 70 years into producing quality furniture with a Midcentury sensibility, Japanese brand Karimoku decided in 2009 to write a new chapter in design by engaging in collaboration with a young crop of international talent and rechristening itself as Karimoku New Standard. Solid Japanese hardwoods such as maple, chestnut and oak are the basis of a line informed by a cultural understanding of craftsmanship coupled with innovative technologies in terms of manufacturing and sustainability. To preserve and revitalize Japanese forests, the hardwood used is from low-diameter trees, long underused. Based in Lausanne, Switzerland, Big-Game is a product, furniture and interior design studio helmed by native Grégoire Jeanmonod and French expat Augustin Scott de Martinville and Belgium expat Elric Petit. Besides KNS, they have designed for Praxis, Alessi, Materia and Globe Trotter.
