Snaregade originated as a one-off for Bjarne Hansen, the creative director and founder of the the Danish design house Menu. So pleased with the results, the creative team who designed the table, Norm.Architects, produced another one for their studio—and, as frequent collaborators with Menu—convinced Bjarne to take the table to market. Norm also named it after the Copenhagen street where its studio is located.

Our crush on Oskar Zieta's work continues with the limited-edition Chippensteel 0.5 Chair. These individual works of design are made from welded sheets of steel and inflated like a balloon using high-pressure air by an innovative process called FiDU (Freielnnen Druck Umformung, as in free inner-pressure deformation). The effect is metal frozen in time. No two are alike. The crumples and crushes happen spontaneously as the flats are filled. Because minimal material is needed, the stools are much lighter than they appear. Polish engineer Oskar is took several awards for the original model in the series, the Plopp Stool, and deservedly snared the Red Dot Award for it.

In some respects, &Tradition's Fly collection pushes back against the vaunted Scandinavian furniture lineage of defined shapes and ergonomic seating. Yet Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou of the design studio Space Copenhagen honor that tradition in their own way, in the contrast of textured cotton/linen upholstery and artfully crafted oak frame with a familiar slatted back rest. Description

It's not always man versus machine. For In Between, Helsinki-born Sami Kallio combines classic wood craftsmanship along with veneer compression molding for a sturdy but surprisingly lightweight stool. The traditional technique that uses a lathe to shape wood—known as woodturning—is part of the fabrication of the slender, solid oak legs, which are positioned at a slight angle. Produced by Copenhagen-based &Tradition in either bar or counter height, the designer says versatility was key. "I wanted the stool to fit comfortably into any setting—just like the person sitting." If the semicircular rail brings to mind that 1949 Danish icon the Wishbone Chair (a.k.a. the Y Chair), Sam freely admits his regard for designer master Hans Wegner. Yet Sam also pushes his In Between forward with a more graphic, modular and lighter form. In Between is part of the "Between Gaps" series by this award-winning designer, who is now based in in Gothenburg, Sweden.

As part of their brief for refinishing Copenhagen's landmark SAS Royal Hotel, Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou created this gracefully rounded chair with a crisp-lined flat exterior and soft channel-padded interior cushioning. With Loafer, they found a shape that conveyed a sense of intimacy even in the vast interior of the lobby. Moreover, relates Peter, "the design had to relate the signature spiral staircase and the circular columns of the space." In the end, though, this strikingly comfortable seating would be at home just about anywhere, in a residential setting or a refined hotel, club, or lounge.

Playful? That's the point. The Tembo stool is a riff on children's toys and African tomtoms. The name Tembo means elephant foot in Swahili: "When elephants walk, they always have at least one foot on the ground. They don't run. Because of their straight legs and large pad-like feet, elephants can stand for very long periods of time without getting tired," observe the folks behind design collective Note Design Studio, who finally found a producing partner for Tembo with new design house La Chance. If there's also something colorfully, quirkily Nordic to Tembo, too, that's because Note Design Studio hail from Sweden. A collective of architects, graphic, interior and product designers that formed in 2008, the group's name refers "to note something" or "to get noted." Well, we certainly noted their maiden outing in furniture design with Tembo, part of La Chance's premiere collection called Jekyll & Hyde. We zeroed in on La Chance's colorful exhibition inside the railway hall of Milan's National Museum of Science and Technology at the 2012 Salone. They were part of Tom Dixon's MOST, a 5-building showcase of new generation design. Paris-based La Chance emphasizes furniture, lighting and rugs with a "strong personality" made from "noble, durable and natural materials" and all in "European human-size facilities" La Chance is also entrepreneur Jean-Baptiste Souletie and architect Louise Breguetbeen, who got together in life and work because of, well, la chance! The French duo have lived in India and China; designed offices in London and built homes in Haiti; and have lent their know-how to established luxury companies and start-ups firms.

Sillon is French for "groove" and designer Sebastian Herkner has found a highly decorative one in his sleekly elongated mirror. It joins the rest of his collection fashioned with ridged metal frames inspired by the French Art Deco movement of the 1930s. In a choice of brass or silver tones, the wall mirror measures a luxurious 6 feet in length and brings a memorable presence to any setting.
