Description

Ethel is just as lovable as Lucy. At least that's so when it comes to the duo by Gaurav Nanda. The Ethel and Lucy dining chairs are part of the Bend collection by the Los Angeles-based Gaurav, who's managed to make wire chairs that are actually comfortable to sit in for a long while. Each piece is machine-molded and undergoes upwards of 400 handmade spot-welds—a process Gaurav refers to as "bending." Each bend is carefully arranged to ensure structural strength. The angles of the back, the curves of the seat and the closeness of the wires are placed a quarter inch apart for comfort and utility. Gaurav grew up in the Detroit suburbs and even spent part of his design career at General Motors. For this collection, he draws pattern inspiration from his childhood: the intricate macram é his mother made; string art Spirograph drawing sets. (He was also a part of the design and conception of Clocky with his sister Gauri.) What's more, the collection is made of an iron that can be repeatedly recycled, and all pieces are sandblasted, then pre-treated with anti-rust zinc primer and powder coated for extended life right in Gaurav's L.A. studio.

Characterized by its brass-peaked lampshade and rattan-covered stem, this floor lamp was designed by Paavo Tynell in 1935 for the resort hotel Aulanko in Hämeenlinna, Finland. Colloquially known as “Chinese Hat,” the shade is available in either white canvas or matching rattan. Now reissued by Gubi,  the playful yet serene 9602 casts a gentle ambient light on any surroundings.

Description

Mika Tolvanen says his Visu Bar Stool is a natural continuation of the Visu chair collection by Muuto. Comfort was the first order of the day for the noted Finnish designer, so Mika envisioned a correspondingly simple wooden stool supported by a unobtrusive steel footrest. The proportions combine a minimal but elegantly curved seat with longer straight stool legs, in oak with a natural oak veneer or ash with a lacquered veneer. In the end, though, Mika's inspired pragmatism finds its greatest value in daily life. As he puts it: "What really defines objects is how we use them, not what they appear to be."
