Damaged is the debut studio album by hardcore punk band Black Flag, released in late 1981. The album was largely ignored by critics and the public at the time of its release but has since been recognized as a classic and one of the most influential punk rock records ever made, appearing on a number of "best of" lists by fans and critics alike.

Jason Williamson discusses ‘English Tapas’: "Andrew walked into some random pub and saw "English Tapas" scrawled on the menu board. Underneath this beautiful coupling of words were it's components, half a scotch egg, cup of chips, pickle and a mini pork pie" It says everything about this fucking place. The Cure, Pornography (180 Gram)

The bleak, hard-driven third LP by the Wipers (originally released in 1983) offers Greg Sage at his most chased and breathless, lashing out with sharp staccato notes as if melody were his only defense. While their debut LP provided the blueprint for grunge, and their second album recast the band as one of America’s premier postpunk bands, it’s Over The Edge that best exemplifies the Wipers’ sound. The jagged, effortless guitar lines, the paranoid lyrics and raw-throated vocals and the taut, unified rhythms that define their sound bleed together most clearly on this LP, and it stands as both the best entry point for new fans and the most prevalent favorite of diehards.

Wipers, Over The Edge

When it comes to otherworldly and blissful alternative pop, Cocteau Twins remain unmatched. The swirling wall of sound matched with Elisabeth Fraser's soaring range - at times childlike or angelic, sets them in a world of their own. Treasure, as critic Chris Jones writes, is where the Cocteau Twins first got it 100 percent right.
The band returned to being a trio in 1984 with bass guitarist Simon Raymonde joining their ranks in time for their third album, Treasure. With the release of this album, the band settled on what would, from then on, be their primary lineup. Produced by guitarist Robin Guthrie and featuring tracks 'Lorelei', 'Ivo' and 'Persephone', Treasure is often celebrated as one of the band's finest works. The influence of the album is far reaching, paving the way for the dream pop of bands like Sigur Rós and Beach House.

Bauhaus, In The Flat Field

The title track of Zombie stands as one of Fela's most popular and heavy hitting hypnotic grooves. It's release was just as notorious. The fury stirred up among the Nigerian police and military by Fela’s confrontational Alagbon Close (1974) and Kalakuta Show (1976), and the beatings and harassments Fela and Africa 70 suffered as a consequence, were as nothing compared to the reprisals following 1976’s Zombie. Within months of its release, a brutal army attack left Fela’s Kalakuta Republic compound burnt to the ground and many of its residents, including Fela, assaulted and seriously injured. On the title track, over an urgent, quick-march accompaniment from Afrika 70, Fela and the backup singers ridicule the mindset of men in uniform. “Attention! Quick march! Slow march! Salute!” sings Fela, “Fall in! Fall out! Fall down! Go and kill! Go and die! Go and quench!” Each phrase is followed by the women singers’ taunting response, “Zombie!” Fela continues: “No brains, no job, no sense joro jara jo; tell am to go kill joro jara jo; tell am to go quench joro jara jo (meaning, “no brains, no job, no sense left right left; tell him to go kill left right left; tell him to go die left right left.”) The army’s response was terrible... On 18 February, 1977, around 1,000 soldiers, most of them armed, swooped on Kalakuta. They cordoned off the surrounding area, broke down the wire fence around the community’s buildings, and battered their way into the central structure. Occupants were stripped and barbarously abused: particularly unfortunate men had their testicles beaten with rifle butts; particularly unfortunate women were raped (another had her nipples crushed between stones). Fela was badly beaten, sustaining a fractured skull and several broken bones. His mother, then aged 77, was thrown out of a window, fracturing a leg and suffering deep trauma. The army then set fire to the compound and prevented the fire brigade reaching the area. The blaze gutted the premises, destroying six Afrika 70 vehicles, all Fela’s master tapes and band equipment, a four-track recording studio, all the residents’ belongings and, for good measure, the free medical clinic run by Fela’s brother, Dr Beko Ransome Kuti (who was also severely beaten in the attack). The first journalists to arrive on the scene were assaulted by soldiers. Inquisitive passers-by were similarly set upon. The army didn’t want any witnesses.

Reduced to a trio (Sonic Boom, Jason "Spaceman" Pierce, and bassist, Pete Bassman) following the departure of the first album's drummer, Spacemen 3 makes an asset out of the newfound lack of percussion, giving The Perfect Prescription a considerably less rock-oriented sound with much more open space in it's varied, subtle arrangements. The comedown drone of 'Feel So Good' is balanced by the gospel-infused spiritual lift up of "Walking With Jesus." Driving riffs, Velvets stylisations, and reverb-soaked bliss. This is the blueprint for all the space rock that followed.

Zen Arcade is the second studio album by American punk rock band Hüsker Dü, released 1984. The album tells the story of a young boy who runs away from an unfulfilling home life, only to find the world outside is even worse. Zen Arcade and subsequent Hüsker Dü albums were instrumental in the creation of the alternative rock genre; the band would later abandon its hardcore punk style entirely in favor of a style of melodic, guitar-driven alternative rock. It is frequently considered to be one of the greatest albums of all time.
